Cid explained in the second episode that all the possessed are descendants of the three heroes. An elf, beastfolk and a human. Alpha just takes after Olivier very strongly.
Because the elves have the longest lives of those species and she is a direct descendant it’s only a few generations instead of the tens of other races. Theta is in the same situation of looking similar due to the golden cat clan of beastfolk having long lives and thus looks similar due to having the least number of generations between them.
The heroes were human experiments. All the possessed are descendants of them. Alfa is a descendent of Oliviei that inherited a lot of her blood to the point that she is identical, so the machine recognized her a s the hero.
Just for fun fact, the ending song were sung by different voice actor according to the image on every episode. For me, I like delta way of singing. You will notice that every episode were sung by different shadow member. I suggest that when you do the reaction, you should include the chibi episode on every main episode. Because every time the main episode were release, it follow up by a chibi episode that sometimes explain the main episode. I find that most reactor overlook this.
So to put it in a summary: Shadow hit the bull's eye on his theory of the cult, but lacks the self-awareness and confidence to realize it. But the truth of the cult is much grimmer. When we first meet Aurora as she is shackled in that psycho bondage suit thing, and after Cid frees her from that, she mentions that she's finally free after a thousand years, and admits afterwards that she's capping, since she doesn't remember, and lost count after 1000. So she says that at the very least, it's been a 1000 years, if not more. This means that the cult has been moling in the shadows of society and controlling it for thousands of years, kidnapping orphans for experiments with Diablos's cells. According to Alpha, majority of the experiment subjects died without being able to adapt to the cells, and probably having their mana receptors ruptured from the surge of mana from Diablos's cells, or just anything else bad that happens if you, say, take another person's cells who isn't compatible with you. Genome scientists can probably ezplain this better, and if there are any here, feel free to, but if I had to guess, taking cells from Diablos would probably be far worse rhan from a normal person who is incompatible with, +the inclusion of mana. As Alpha said, the only ones to survive the injection of Diablos's cells were 3 girls, also known as The Three Heroes (which is why all of Shadow Garden is girls). One of them was an elf named Olivier, who happened to become very famous in history, because she “Defeated Diablos.” The reality is, though, that her purpose as a person wasn't to fight Diablos. The cult's scientists employed her as a way to get new Diablos's Cells. From what we saw, they had high tech chemo suits and other insane things, likely to not breath in any of Diablos's spores or miasma and such. And after Olivier cut Diablos's arm, it was still dropping them like flies with its Eldrich-looking control over its arm's structure even after it was cut off. So there's a clear power contrast here to what Diablos is capable of. Either way, after sealing the arm, they were able to create the unfinished pills from its cells, which we've seen be used by Viscount Grease and Zenon Griffey. And those who used it, and were able to control it, were called “The Awakened” because of how unfinished those pills were, and how hard it is to control. They'd simply have to adapt to the cells, just like The Three Heroes. That's why Zenon was saying, “Those able to control it are the true chosen ones.” It's because the original 3 heroes did. It's a legendary feat in the world. So, continuing to develop the pills, the cult finally finished the pills, and named them “The Beads of Diablos.” But as Alpha said, they had 2 flaws. 1: If not taken periodically, the effect will wear off. 2: Only 12 can be produced in a year. So because they could produce 12, they created The Knights of The Round Table, the highest ranking members of the cult who had the privelege to consume the Beads of Diablos. What's the effect of the Beads, you say? Immortality. More specifically, Ageless Immortality. So basically, it's some Philosopher's stone BS combined with High Tech Science insanity. Possibly Quantum Mechanics. And as I mentioned before, the show doesn't have magic. All the magic circle things you saw this arc, were for visuals, and they're likely simply quantum technology, or normal technology in general. Even Aurora didn't use them. The power system is simply being able to control mana, and reinforcing your body's molecules either for strength or defense. And as I mentioned before, they can't even shoot mana out of their bodies, because it's hard to control mana that well. There is no proper magic system to do that type of control. Aurora was simply using blood spears, since the human blood is already a mana conduit. Likely because Red Blood cells have mana receptors and such. Maybe not Red Blood Cells, but cells in general. Point is, there's no magic system, it's all mana, and the cult is some science fantasy mega corporation that's been controlling the world for who knows how many thousands of years, since not even Aurora can remember. And the entire Shadow Garden is consisted of descendants of the 3 heroes, meaning higher mana capacity, therefore higher chance of their mana going haywire, since not all the kids would be as strong as the heroes. But the heroes were likely taken by royal families as well. That's why Alexia is a hero descendant. The Human hero probably married into the Midgar royalty. The reason it looks like a normal fantasy on the surface, is because the cult is framing it as such, and basically hiding all the truth about the Heroes' descendants and Diablos. The heroes descendants, when overcome by the mana frenzy, and in their “possession” form, are captured by the church, tortured, and publically executed. It's very grim. Shadow saving them is a pretty big deal. Becuase they either get public execution, or become experiment subjects. Not to mention, their families disown them. And that's the surface of what kind of horrific shit happened to the Shadow Garden girls. It's no wonder they love Cid so much. His contributions are no joke

The cult is very adept at twisting history in a way that doesn’t lie, but actually twists it in a way that is still technically true, yet is horrifically extreme in terms of deviating from what the actual truth is. The whole “Possession” and it being a “Curse,” is all an extremely manipulative deviation in meaning, which exploits the people’s lack of knowledge on genome science and how it interacts with mana, just like how science would be deemed as witchcraft in our world, as a way for the Medieval Roman Catholic Church to insert control. Either way, we have a suspect named “Goddess Beatrix,” who “bestowed powers upon the 3 heroes, so that they can defeat the Demon Diablos.” Keep this in your minds, peeps.

When priest guy was super tropey he said "You're a possessed elf! But you were incompatible! You should have died!" I'm pretty sure we'll get more explanation next episode. This is little bit late but at around 12:20, you guys talked about the opening scene which is explained in the game. The whole opening is kind of a fictional universe dreamt up by Cid where they it takes place in like the modern world with each other the girls becoming a power ranger type group.
Fun episode. Enjoyed your reaction. Beta is a lot of fun. Unlike Alpha, she struggled with nightmares (from possession etc.) when she was a kid, and Cid stayed up telling her bedtime stories from our world to help her sleep, which is one reason why she loves him so much and also became a writer. I think Alpha may just be a direct descendant of Olivier, who lived c. a thousand years ago.
Shadow Garden are generally in their mid-teens to mid-20s. The story of the Three Heroes have been around for centuries. Alpha only knows that much about Olivier due to years of research and sussing out the truth.
Alpha is Olivier's current direct descendant, by the way, not Olivier herself. Make sure to check out my not so short summary, if you can. I tried to recontextualize and contextualize things we learned from this episode and what it explains about the previous episodes. You also might wanna rewatch a few scenes, 'cause you missed Nelson's reveal completely, and probably missed Cid's explanation of his philosophy of the “Conversation” as well, when he was fighting Aurora. They're pretty quick scenes, and you'll get the dialogue just from one go.

It's always funny when people realise that this show has a surprising amount of depth to it's story. For everyone except Cid, this is (science-)fantasy Game of Thrones. But from Cid's PoV, it's all a giant LARP. There's a few episodes that are more lore heavy than others, but the way it's sprinkled through the show means you can miss when things get foreshadowed, and since it's just small things that happen in throwaway lines or in the background, people forget them when what happened there becomes relevant 10~20+ episodes later. In that sense Eminence has also surprising amounts of rewatch value, at least once.
This is the thing that my brain has trouble shifting gears on 🤣 I had the impression for a very long time it was kind of just a popcorn anime you really didn't need to think about, just sit back and enjoy! But that rule seemingly only applies to when Cid is talking lmao anytime someone else opens their mouth they're saying important things. Please look forward to lots of continued growing pains from us lmao

If the phrase “Never let your enemy know your next move” was a person, it would be him. The Anime is so clever at bamboozling us that we never know what Cid is thinking. …Unless, of course, we start paying attention. That’s when you understand what he’s thinking, at least to some degree. And rewatches help a lot with that one. The Anime is masterfully directed to filter out those who don’t pay attention. Once you start paying attention, you become a big fan, and dive deeper into the novel for more info on the truth of what Cid actually thinks.
I'm pretty sure you'll get some explanation in the next episode so no need for spoilers. That said anime doesn't really go into detail with the whole "blood-cult-diabolos" stuff. Oh, and Nivi-sama, you really should share your theories in advance, so we can roast you when you're wrong.
With the whole heroes descendants being villified as cursed thing I used to think the witch of calamity might have been a part of the hero's party. But Im an idiot.
Yeah you should really be checking out Kage Jistu (chibi episodes) that go along with each normal episode. Kage Jitsu episode 1 starts with eminence in shadow episode 3. And after that it was a kage jitsu episode for each eminence episode.
