  • The NCB produced this short film in 1979 to extol the efficiencies gained by using merry go round trains to deliver coal to power stations.

    Carbon capture technology was coming along nicely too, making this method of producing electricity very efficient and reliable.
    For those of you who don't know, those big towers are not chimneys for burning coal, they are cooling towers for allowing the escape of excess heat from the process of generating the electricity.
    I love the Merry Go Round concept. Seeing it up close and personal is quite amazing.
    I remember seeing the 56s on the production line at Doncaster too.
    Great times.

    Interesting.
    Just shows what we (in us mostly) have lost

      Possibly but houses were colder and everywhere smelled of sulfur too.

    You can only do this if the two industries are run as one. Today even the railways are run in a fragmented nightmare, never mind energy!

      Very true when you stand back and look at the whole picture.
      Is that progress or not.

      Although MGR's are a thing of the past, it's good to see other commodities still carried by rail, with a renaissance of freight.

    This was all organised by people who just wanted to produce energy as cheaply and efficiently as possible, for the benefit their customers.

    A lot of companies this time and now are “money grabbers”. The general public gets stuck with the bill, now and then.

    Wonder which power station this is?

      The one that appears most prominently is Ratcliffe-on-Soar PS, which is still running to this day and is the last coal fired installation in the country.
      Various coal sidings appear, much of the on the move and aerial footage of trains is between Trent Sth Jnc along the line towards Nottingham, past attenborough.

      @BennettBrookRailway One more question,
      does transperth do work experience?

    • @BennettBrookRailway
      @BennettBrookRailway  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, but if you are referring to work experience for train drivers, I don't think they do that.
      I believe the minimum age for a train driver is 21 or 22. Transperth highly values good customer service experience in for train drivers.

      @BennettBrookRailway
      my guess it's most likely for safety reasons🙁
      But the minimum to apply for a position of a train driver is you have to have an unrestricted driver's licence

    Are all the original films this fuzzy? I seem to recall a lot more detail visible in the cinemas.

    • @BennettBrookRailway
      @BennettBrookRailway  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No. It's hard to find good quality copies of these films. They are usually 2nd generation copies of video transfers.

      @@BennettBrookRailway I'm happy to see anything about the history of UK rail. It has certainly helped as I develop my model railway British "style" here in the U.S. Thanks for every one you've posted.

    When electricity cost about 4p / Kw. Still what’s 30p / Kw when we’re saving the planet.

      It's gas, the fossil fuel, primarily responsible for that, although the structure of the UK energy market certainly doesn't help.

    Ah back in the days when times were carefree and no cares much about environmental warming from fossil fuels, 😢

      Yeah, the last out recently closed in Wales. Now we import it instead 😂 Very environmentally friendly, particularly as our Carbon Footprint is minimal compared to the likes of India and China.

      Import of what? There are hardly any coal burning facilities in the UK left. @@peterskegness3204
