And remember, two singles later comes Todd's favorite song of 2015. ("Style", which I didn't think was that great, tbh.) This is nice, harmless, fun. (The best song on the album was "Clean", IMO.) But Todd has his panties in a twist…sigh. Three years later, and Todd's crapping all over the lead single from Taylor's newest album. Yeah, right, breathe, dude. "Reputation" will crush everything in its path (got rid of fucking "Despacito" when nobody else could, already) and "Look What You Made Me Do" is infectious and unforgettable, Todd's fulminations aside. Why Todd gotta be so mean?

We're in the era (so to speak) where the mildest criticisms will lead to hundreds of angry comments about how you're part of the problem or whatever. Meanwhile, Taylor's probably too busy counting her money and polishing her awards to give a shit.
When I heard "My ex-man", I immediately assumed she was saying her bf got a sex change. And since Taylor called her an "ex-man", the now-lady dumped her, Taylor's now butthurt, but cannot quite figure out why her gf ditched her.
Those poor dancers...imagine having decades of training and your only job here is to use that to make Taylor look extra bad...which she is all on her own...
Taylor Swift is the kind of artist I've always thought I should like a lot more than I do... Everything I used to like about her was ruined by a really bad karaoke session and a trio of teenage girls who couldn't sing.
I wasn't able to get on board with Taylor Swift until Blank Space. Before that, it's been nothing but "meh". Blank Space won me over pretty hard, and "Style" helped that. Now I'm looking forward eagerly to see her become the pop goddess that she deserves to be. I know other people probably think she's already there but nah, when she does a whole album of hit after hit, with no weak tracks, then she'll be there. As for this song... I kind of hate it. Well not really, I don't hate any songs, but the song is way out of Taylor's range as a singer, making her voice sound awkward throughout the whole thing. The dry production doesn't lend well to the vocal melody either. The chorus isn't very catchy melodically either, it's too redundant and too low of a drop in the pitch to really be easy or fun to sing along to. The whole tone of the song just isn't very good. Taylor's at her best when there's a dark undercurrent to the music and/or lyrics, when she's playing fun and carefree, we get 22 and Shake it Off... which just suck... I'll honestly even defend "I knew you were trouble" for that reason, but I'm not even calling it good. It's just better than Shake it Off. Oh and for the record the music video sucks too. It feels like an advertisement, not a song. Like if that Progressive mascot woman made a music video, this would be it. Ugh...
+BassbaitGG The video is like when the boss wears a silly tie & performs a lame skit at the company meeting. She's trying too hard to say "Hey, I'm cool, I can totally take a joke at my own expense," and in the end as you suffer through that utterly painful performance you're left torn between hating her even more or just plain pitying her. Then she releases "Bad Blood" and you just want her to move to another galaxy.
BassbaitGG Poor wording, I didn't mean hate ~her~ (Taylor), I meant the hypothetical boss. But I would like Taylor to move to another galaxy if "Bad Blood" is any indication of her future works.
Harv72b fair point on the boss thing, but idk, "Bad Blood" will be an indication of *some* of her future works. That's just how pop careers go now - rather than their music gradually moving in one particular trend, multiple trends start and continue at separate speeds. As in, we will get more songs like "Bad Blood". We'll get more songs like "Shake it Off", but we'll also get more songs like "Style" and more songs like "Blank Space". Drake's a good example. Every now and then we get a "Take Care", but then we get "Started from the Bottom", and then "Hotline Bling" which is a mixed bag of a song. Like where is Drake's music headed? It's hard to tell because it appears to be headed in several different directions at once, but that's just how pop star music is now.
I find Avril Lavigne's career direction from her 3rd album onward really fascinating, and virtually nobody talks about what happened objectively, its just all bashing her for making Hello Kitty. I don't think people understand, she was the Lorde/Billie Eilish of her time, this kid who came out of nowhere and unapologetically did her own thing. She was everything to me in middle school, and I absolutely loved her first two albums. Relistening to them as an adult, I can't say they've aged super well, but there's still some substance there, and there was potential. And then she just kinda bellyflopped on her 3rd album. But she didn't have to, it came out around the peak of the emo era, she absolutely could have rode that wave and done it really well. But instead she made a shitty pop-rock album (produced by Dr. Luke lmao) that sounded way less mature than the music she made as a teenager, and basically let Hayley Williams/Paramore steal her whole ass career.
"Oh God, Lorde. What's gonna happen to her in 5 years???" If you were thinking she'd get darker and darker and become like Florence and the Machine or Tory Amos, you'd be WAY off! lol
@@fulldisclosureiamamonster2786 I actually did a remix of it with a Slipknot song. Check it out, I'm extremely proud of it. soundcloud.com/gabriel-schleifer/shake-off-the-maggots-taylor-swiftknot
@Luke It's not beyond criticism for sure, but you can't let the criticisms define you. If you like it and it's not hurting anyone, there's no reason to be ashamed. It's why I hate "cringe" being used as an adjective: it's just about making people ashamed of being themselves.
I agree with a lot of your points, but even at Avril’s worst, she still made some good songs. Let Me Go, which is on the same album as Hello Kitty, is one of her best songs.
Eh it's just a few years now till the first batch of teens here in CA known for spouting hella to the point other regions can geographically place me simply by my casual unironic use of the word Actually ARE 40 something producers.
Oh, and "haters gonna hate" was a LOLCATS meme years before this song was released. Way to be as timely as my mom on Facebook, Taylor. And stop trying to be adorkable! You look like Barbie!
As a country fan I totally agree with you on the state of country right now. And I’m a lover for specific lyrics, the more specific the more universal the emotional response imo, that’s why I love Lori McKenna so much!
Todd in the Shadows, I respect your opinion and Taylor Swift can be a little annoying. However, In the beginning of 2022; I still have the “1989” CD, that album sold 9 times platinum and the vinyl record is currently sold out. A lot of people still love Taylor’s “1989” album.
What does that have to do with the Shake It Off possibly not being a good song? You know that not everything popular is automatically good, right? Just to clarify,I quite enjoy 1989 as an album, although it does have some weak songs on it. I just never understood the reasoning of "that album sold *insert a huge number* copies, guess you are wrong about the song being wrong". It's not really an argument
I had a friend who was a big Taylor fan and thought she was a great song writer. This was 7 years ago and we've lost touch since highschool, but I would love to know what he thinks now.
I feel like her voice just isnt strong enough for these sort of songs so she almost gets swallowed by the music lol her voice suits sweet guitar ballads
that Segment with Avril lavigne is kind of funny, because 1. she absolutely did turn into late stage Avril, and 2. going from Taylor to Avril-Taylor wasn't even that far a drop in quality.
Funny thing - Taylor is one of the few cultural figures that everyone knows about these days. And this song - THIS song - is the only one of hers that all of her non-fans seem to know.
This is the only Taylor Swift song I like. I think the song and the video are fun and silly and that's all they're intended to be. Although, my opinion may have been influenced a bit by the Hillywood show Supernatural parody which is where I originally heard it. Their version is a goddamn masterpiece.
Great review, Todd. Yeah, the main problem with this song (which I enjoy, by the way) is that Taylor doesn't seem to know the difference between a hater and a critic.
Sheryl crow is like legendary compared to Taylor Swift. And Sheryl Crow? All she did was end up doing adult contemporary and that ugly overrated song with Kid Rock.
Since Lorde is not making big hits anymore. Yeah i dont think so. But he couldve reviewed Royals when it was popular. And Green Light literally became his number one song in his 2017 Best Hits List
It's one of the most obnoxious songs I've ever heard. Instead of being naturally catchy, it tries to force it and it's seriously obnoxious. That's all I can say about it. It's just obnoxious, obnoxious, obnoxious. And I knew someone who's like her.
10:17 wait, is this a Todd running joke I never noticed before? Him replying "hey" to the song? He did the same when he put closer as #1! Now I need to see if there are more examples.
Well considering the fact that George Harrison wrote a song about taxes when he was 22. Ray Davies was about 24 when he wrote "Sunny Afternoon" Taylor is way behind in writing about Taxes.
Taylor Swift: My "not involved in staying up until 4am reading mean tweets about myself and crying" t shirt has people asking a lot of questions already answered by my shirt
I'm a bit late, butttt... She definitely can't take a joke. Case evidence: Graham Norton Show scene where John Cleese makes a joke of Taylor's cat. And she just can't.
This seems like her business model. She’s found a niche in seeking negative attention. If some people love to hate her she’s figured out how to profit from provoking them. Others will love her for it.
11:30 She’ is an undercover. This song is to make you ignore what haters and trolls are actually saying. It is mind-programming for the .. fans. Ignore all criticism, so you will never learn.
I know it's goofy bubblegum pop but personally I will take this track over anything else she's done. But I'm not a teenage girl in the middle of a breakup, so there's that. Honestly I quite like this track. I could do without the rapping though.

Taylor Swift is the kind of artist I've always thought I should like a lot more than I do... Everything I used to like about her was ruined by a really bad karaoke session and a trio of teenage girls who couldn't sing.
I realise this is from 7 years ago, but I read "trio of teemage girls" and immediatley thought you meant HAIM lol
Harv72b
eh, I don't hate Taylor. This song is just crap and the video is lame, but that's not really much of a reason for me to hate her.
BassbaitGG
Poor wording, I didn't mean hate ~her~ (Taylor), I meant the hypothetical boss. But I would like Taylor to move to another galaxy if "Bad Blood" is any indication of her future works.
Harv72b
fair point on the boss thing, but idk, "Bad Blood" will be an indication of *some* of her future works.
Oof. The first paragraph of this comment did NOT age well.
What's gonna happen to her in 5 years???"
If you were thinking she'd get darker and darker and become like Florence and the Machine or Tory Amos, you'd be WAY off! lol
13:50 One of my favorite Todd bits.
13:30 funny thing is...
they're now *both* on the Bleachers. Iykyk
I honestly find this to be kind of a guilty pleasure.
It's just so dumb and goofy! I dare call it a novelty song.
Gabriel Schleifer same and if we die young by Kesha which I actually love because of vizziepops music video
The instrumental isn't too bad. Look up the mashup with NIN's The Perfect Drug, it's hilarious but actually bops
@@fulldisclosureiamamonster2786 I actually did a remix of it with a Slipknot song. Check it out, I'm extremely proud of it.

@@Oliviagarry69420 LOVE Vivzi so much! She's so talented!!
@Luke It's not beyond criticism for sure, but you can't let the criticisms define you. If you like it and it's not hurting anyone, there's no reason to be ashamed.
It's why I hate "cringe" being used as an adjective: it's just about making people ashamed of being themselves.
Lucky for us, Lorde killed it with Melodrama. That album is amazing with such soulful lyrics.
I agree with a lot of your points, but even at Avril’s worst, she still made some good songs. Let Me Go, which is on the same album as Hello Kitty, is one of her best songs.
What kind of 40 year old says hella? I always associate that with valley girls.
+MadameSomnambule
I think he meant 40 year old studio hacks. Like they put in "hella" to try and make themselves sound hip and cool.
amyrat151 Ah. Kinda like how the 40 year old execs decided to give teen characters in the 90s corny slang to make them hip and cool.
*****
Yes
Eh it's just a few years now till the first batch of teens here in CA known for spouting hella to the point other regions can geographically place me simply by my casual unironic use of the word Actually ARE 40 something producers.
Valley girls are in their 40’s now
Selling out... and this was still two years before Swift's "Look what you made me do"-period. Does Taylor Swift ever stop selling out?
Watching Todd’s song reviews from years ago are always a fun watch 😂
"Taylor swift is rapping?!"
Oh sweetie... just wait
"Taylor Swift is the thinnest skinned celebrity alive."
What about Donald Trump?
Grate Gaming! SNL had fun at his expense now he acts like a child about it
If Taylor Swift is the Queen of thin skinned celebrities, then Trump is the King.
Nathaniel Levesque He's the Lord Buckethead
He's an easy target that too many people go after.
And Uwe Boll.
Taylor getting more vapid was a hella good prediction for the year 2019 lmao
I actually have friends that say hella and things like that.
But I have NEVER heard my ex man!
jacking the black thing
Those people aren’t your friends
One good thing came from this song. Hillywood did a great Supernatural parody with this song.
SALshaNoma hell yeah
“Hey hey hey” “hey” sends me every time
I believe Todd will be back at the Taylor hate train. She got lucky with her Anti hero stuff. We need angry Todd.
"Pop Music ruins everything."
Make that a T-shirt and take my money!!
are these haters... your parents XD
marlon claymore Anybody know the song or video 0:49 was referencing?
“Pop music ruins everything” is one of the truest statements ever uttered on the internet
Oh, and "haters gonna hate" was a LOLCATS meme years before this song was released. Way to be as timely as my mom on Facebook, Taylor. And stop trying to be adorkable! You look like Barbie!
13:37-13:41. At least now we know what's happened to Lorde a few years after this song came out!
I'm suddenly addicted to rewatch all of your videos idk why but I'm 8 videos in with no stop in sight.
I'll aid you in that: (Vlog about Transformers 3) www.yahoo.com/entertainment/video/vlog-transformers-3-todd-nostalgia-015651470.html
"I thought she would move from teen romance and boys named Drew to I don't know... paying taxes"
AND WE GOT BILLS TO PAY
WE GOT NOTHING FIGURED OUT
She went from singing about being at least a semi-responsible young adult to a 14 year old going through an emo phase. It is embarrassing.
Watching this after "Look what you made me do" review is hilaaaaarioooous!
I had a friend who was a big Taylor fan and thought she was a great song writer. This was 7 years ago and we've lost touch since highschool, but I would love to know what he thinks now.
still great.
I never realized there was a rapping part because I never got that far down this horrible song
Best review ever! I literally shouted out in affirmation after watching.
Having that music video being the intro video to a school assembly back then was hilarious.
Tunnel of butts gets me every time😂😂😂😂
Not gonna lie, I do like this song. Your criticisms are valid, but the song just feels like a larger than life, fun pop song.
I genuinely think the rhythm slaps, but I didn't know much about her career beforehand, so I don't have the deep, _deep_ disappointment that Todd has
I feel like her voice just isnt strong enough for these sort of songs so she almost gets swallowed by the music lol her voice suits sweet guitar ballads
that Segment with Avril lavigne is kind of funny, because 1. she absolutely did turn into late stage Avril, and 2. going from Taylor to Avril-Taylor wasn't even that far a drop in quality.
"Has Taylor swift been a 40 year-old pretending to be a young person the whole time?"
*Randy Marsh flashbacks*
I wonder what Todd thinks about Green Light, Lorde's new song.
You’ll see
Funny thing - Taylor is one of the few cultural figures that everyone knows about these days. And this song - THIS song - is the only one of hers that all of her non-fans seem to know.
This was another song, like Blurred Lines, that I had an immediate, visceral hatred of when it first came out.
"haters gonna hate baby i'm just gonna shake it off"
yeah considering what happened after this album i'm not sure
This is the only Taylor Swift song I like. I think the song and the video are fun and silly and that's all they're intended to be. Although, my opinion may have been influenced a bit by the Hillywood show Supernatural parody which is where I originally heard it. Their version is a goddamn masterpiece.
Great review, Todd. Yeah, the main problem with this song (which I enjoy, by the way) is that Taylor doesn't seem to know the difference between a hater and a critic.
I disagree. I think the tunnel of butts was the only good thing!
I like the part with all the cheerleaders ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
*Pro tip:* If you’re writing a song about it, you probably care a little bit
I wonder why taylor didn't go into a Sheryl crow direction instead of this.
Sheryl crow is like legendary compared to Taylor Swift. And Sheryl Crow? All she did was end up doing adult contemporary and that ugly overrated song with Kid Rock.
And Taylor swift was already pop. I or nobody took her country stuff seriously.
You’ve mentioned Lorde consistently throughout your videos at what point are we actually going to get a dedicated video on her??
Since Lorde is not making big hits anymore. Yeah i dont think so. But he couldve reviewed Royals when it was popular. And Green Light literally became his number one song in his 2017 Best Hits List
The music video is honestly one of my favorites. I'm just a sucker for mash-ups of different styles.
this is so funny to watch in retrospect
Tragic story with good one Toddstradamus
Todd makes everything sound better when he plays it on piano!
Lorde eventually released a pretty good album. One the few artists fom earlier in the dercade to progress without failing.
He predicted Look What You Made Me Do. I'm just glad he seems to be wrong about Lorde's career prospects.
This was the most bi-polar review of anything I've ever heard.
It sounds like the rap breakdown in “Girlfriend”
It's one of the most obnoxious songs I've ever heard. Instead of being naturally catchy, it tries to force it and it's seriously obnoxious. That's all I can say about it. It's just obnoxious, obnoxious, obnoxious. And I knew someone who's like her.
10:17 wait, is this a Todd running joke I never noticed before? Him replying "hey" to the song? He did the same when he put closer as #1!
Now I need to see if there are more examples.
Did you find more examples ?
Well considering the fact that George Harrison wrote a song about taxes when he was 22. Ray Davies was about 24 when he wrote "Sunny Afternoon" Taylor is way behind in writing about Taxes.
This is the most comprehensive and detailed Taylor Swift smackdown that I never knew I needed but am glad exists lmao. God I cannot stand her lol
5:58 youtube’s format has changed so much this joke is crazy different now
I have to listen to this song every day on my work radio station and until now i never would have guessed it was Taylor swift
I'm in full support of the tunnel of butts. If I made a music video, tunnel of butts would be my first priority
Taylor Swift: My "not involved in staying up until 4am reading mean tweets about myself and crying" t shirt has people asking a lot of questions already answered by my shirt
NEW LORDE ALBUM OUT 5 YEARS LATER, HOW ARE WE DOING BESTIES. GLAD THAT TODDSTRADAMUS REMAINS WRONG, I PRESUME.
The dancers in her video need some serious credit.
I'm a bit late, butttt... She definitely can't take a joke. Case evidence: Graham Norton Show scene where John Cleese makes a joke of Taylor's cat. And she just can't.
She took that pretty well tho. It was a joke aon how she played it too and john clease complimented her humour.
This seems like her business model. She’s found a niche in seeking negative attention. If some people love to hate her she’s figured out how to profit from provoking them. Others will love her for it.
Glad to inform you Lorde is doing okay
11:30 She’ is an undercover. This song is to make you ignore what haters and trolls are actually saying. It is mind-programming for the .. fans. Ignore all criticism, so you will never learn.
I know it's goofy bubblegum pop but personally I will take this track over anything else she's done. But I'm not a teenage girl in the middle of a breakup, so there's that. Honestly I quite like this track. I could do without the rapping though.
@Ramona McNish can't say I have. I'll give it a go though. Thanks for the tip-off!
What about her last two album, folklore and evermore?
