- This Off-Grid Super Simple Wood Burning Hot Tub is maybe the best thing we've ever done. Normal hot tubs are nice, but I've never been a fan of old chemical treated water and noisy pumps. And the location of this off-grid hot tub is phenomenal, in a magical mature forest, next to a spring, miles from anywhere.
I failed initially, just so you could learn from my mistakes;) but it made the final success even better. And it was amazing! Seriously the best.

Nice job guys!. We used to have one out at our secret, off grid camp site west of Rocky Mountain House. We had to dig it into the sand river bank though, and line it with a tarp. I used a bilge pump for circulation, and that thing would get screaming hot if you left the coil in the fire. Within a couple summers, we'd regularly have 10 or more sometimes out there for the weekends. The best thing we built was the sauna though! Bird one end wall out of plywood and a 4 x 4 piece of roofing metal. Cut a hole in the metal to fit the diameter of a small barrel into snug. The rest of your hut can be a tent made from old tarps. Canvas is best. The drum is a fire box, with about a foot of it inside the hut. beat that end flat enough to hold a couple good size rocks. Throw a chunk of stove pipe on it and light it up! When the rocks are hot, throw some water on and enjoy. The hot tub coils with the bilge pump make a nice warm shower too if you're next to a water source. Take a pallet out and throw it down for the floor, and you have some happy campers! Hotel rooms like that cost $1500 a night! Ha ha ha ha

Nice! I built something similar. It was 2x6's notched and stacked like lincoln logs to form a 6x6x6 cube with no top and lined with a tarp. It could be taken apart and put together without any hardware which was nice. I put the copper coil in a metal trash can. It worked great the first time but then when more wood was added, one of the coils got pinched closed. If was going to do it again, I'd get a 3/4 or 1 inch stainless steel pipe bent into a coil for more flow and no more worries about deforming the copper.
The real name for popple is Aspen. My natural resources professor used to blow a gasket if one of us called them popple.
I learned it from an American friend of mine. It’s just so fun to say Popple vs Aspen:)

I made one of those once and the same thing happened when the fire got to hot. It just spewed and popped. Have to regulate the fire to keep it from being to hot.Think about it. If your thermostat is to high it gets the water to hot and would blister you bad.
Raise your coil so the return flows downward slightly
40°C is healthy for about 15min. After that you should go out. Hotter than 40 can be dangerous. Nice idea. Wondering how fast it would heat up the tub with 3/4copper pipe coil.

If you encase the coil in clay, it will retain heat and last longer.

The coil assembly needs to be below the bottom of the hot tub that way the as the hot water flows up, the cold water will flow down.
The original design would have the water stagnate.

The up should be exclusively up. Heat rises, if at any point the rising pipe is down, flow will suffer.

Rose's face is prose, for being put on youtube froze, her husband promised her a hot tub, but only delivered a sketch up, copper pipe and twigs couldn't show!
I bilt one I had to put a foot valve on it to circulate the water and my bottom water was cold so used a snow shovel to stir it . it would get so hot couldn.t get in it
for the convection to work atleast 3-4 inch of the heat source below the tub no?
a tip
you buld a wood tank and use 1 inch coils, 500 gal wood tank very easy
put the top of the coil feeding into the bottom of the tub that will set up convectio currents i the tub
what about the brown baers if you sit in a bathtub

I am so happy you did this. I also built one out of a 300 gal cattle tank. i cant burn wood in the open so I used a old propane tank with charcoal. For fun I added fish tank air stones and hooked it up to my air compressor. Now not being off grid i wanted to have more fun I added a sump pump and made a flow in the tank and a water fall. Best parts water gets bad pull the plug drain start with clean water.

As an engineer this simple and effective design is right up my alley, just needs a small , solar powered circulator pump and you're good to go. Natural convection works but not as efficient. Good job! Hand cranked pump should also work well to get it going

I'm not an engineer on paper, but have built a lot of wood fired water heaters that work, and one or two that had the same problem as his. It has much less to do with the length of the coil, and everything to do with the little bit of downward angle on the top (hot) pipe into the tank! You can NOT have ANY downward flow in a convection system! Not even a little bit, if you want it to flow perfectly! Everything MUST be at least level, but preferably going up in the direction of flow, even if only slightly! The hottest water wants to go to the highest point, and actually slows the flow enough that it will start making steam and pressure to shove it through. The water will move surprisingly fast if everything is on the up and up! Lol pun intended....

To make your hot tub work the way you want it too, simply install a one way flapper valve on the cold water side and it pump the water, then it will be fantastic Cheers from Australia

Hey Jeff I made a stove out of a barrel , I ran the coil in the chimney pipe . It needs a constant temperature to maintain flow . I love what you did though and what a beautiful spot !!!
