    the Markbass has the most depth to the sound. I like it.

      I just bought that amp, and I love the tone! But I'm also a guy who builds tube amps, so I decided to open it up and check out the build quality. Ugh. Might have to do a video about it. I actually came to this video to check out alternatives to it. On the fence as to whether I will send this back for a replacement, or if I'll just get a different amp altogether.

      @@hugeshows Please do the video, I'm really intrigued what you found. I was thinking to buy a Markbass because I rally like the tone until I read your comment. Please do that video!

      @@Dc_94 I've already returned it unfortunately. I didn't want to play around with the ability to take it back and get a refund. I did wind up contacting them about it. They seem a bit sure of themselves and more or less dismissed my criticisms. I've ordered a Trickfish 1k to replace it.

    I tried all of these... ended up buying EBS..but the 750 version..!!.. They all had good & bad points, but overall, the EBS is a real world, easy to operate, hugely powered amp, with a fantastic compressor/limiter & as clean or as dirty sounding as you'll ever need...at a great price too. I used the same bass to try them all, Sadowsky jazz in both active & passive modes. With all the amps set flat, the EBS was the only amp that didn't seem to colour the sound of the bass. They're all decent amps..but personally, the EBS just had some quality about it that shone above the rest. Julia..nice playing by the way.

    I tried 4 of these. My Bergantino forte HP was what made me quit looking any further for a head.
    My Berg, like my Sadowsky bass. Once you get that piece of equipment that is around 85% of what you want, then stop.
    Because you will spend an insane amount trying to find the elusive 5-10% tone, that might only exist in your head.

    • @Cap683
      @Cap683 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bergantino is top tier along with Aguilar, Trickfish, and Mesa. Some of these amps are okay but there are better amps out there but you have to pay more money. I personally own an Aguilar AG 700 but there are others in the $1000 range that are rated pretty high. Testing an amp that is not set flat with no effects in the signal is the only realistic way to do a comparison.

    @paulsummerside 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    EBS was quite toppy and a bit modern, even though quite liked it. I wanted to like it more than I did
    The MarkBass was very full and rounded, didn’t want to like it, but did. Probably the one that might end up zeroing in on if played them all myself.
    Oddly the TC had perhaps the most classic type of bass sound of the lot. And was certainly the no nonsense one of the lot.

    markbass has the best balance of warm and clear crisp tones. it has this good low/bassy but not muddled (clear crisp) mix to it that makes every note u play sound "whole". loved it. the others (excluding darkglass) were either thin sounding or muffled.
    id exclude the darkglass cause it shouldnt have been in that category of ampheads. darkglass caters mostly to metal or heavy genres.

  • @marvinrockon
    @marvinrockon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The EBS got that honk, but isnt bad. The Phil Jones is a modern funky sound, the Darkglass is for modern metal and rock, THe Tc electronics got a great sound for the price, something between vintage and modern sound, the Markbass is more Vintage with a very musical tube sound. I love the Markbass - the lower frequencies are having such a depth to it and that little tube saturation is great too.

    it would have been interesting to set all heads with same gain setting, eq flat, no effects, and adjust master accordingly, which was not the case here. Difficult to compare in this situation, where gains are differents, EBS has character and comp engaged, Markbass has tube curve and limiter engaged, Darkglass first testes with full overdrive (wtf?!) + eq not flat, and finally TC with eq not flat. Moreover this comparison is made between amps going from 135 to 1111€ and from 200 to 900 watts, not mentioning connections possibilities, etc... Keep all those facts in mind before rushing a "shut up and take my money"

    Wow, to hear what people thought sounded good, while sacrificing the all important other things in the tone,....just astounds me. You'd figure I'd be used to it by now...
    EBS Reidmar 502 all the way! The Mark Bass sounded MUDDY! I really wanted it to sound great because I sincerely believe a hybrid setup get's the best of both worlds, the Solid State just has better low notes that are crystal clear and defined all the way down to 20hz, and the tube gives that all important saturation on the high mids/high end that you need to cut through a mix! Maybe have a Drawmer 1976 hooked up to a Solid State amp and that's the way to go!

    Hmmm... can't really say I like any of these. I will hold on to my 25-year-old Trace Elliot. Admittedly, the small sizes of new amps are truly impressive, but they only offer basic EQing. My GP12SMX from the mid 90s has got an "EQ balance" dial that works like a see-saw on a graphic EQ - which is perfect for getting the deep end back into the bridge pickup without sacrificing any of the dry growl - also, without any dents in the frequency response, i.e. no booming freq bands. I don't see a 3-band EQ doing that nearly as well.
    On top of that, it has got tube and solid state input (blendable, of course) and separate high and low compression. The only thing I would really have loved to have on this amp is MIDI controllable patches for quick acess without all the button fiddling. But then, neither of these new ones seems to have that either, so what happend to bass amps? To me, the miniaturization is really the only step forward in the last decades - everything else looks like some steps back to me. What gives?

      @@abeare9616 Oooooohhhh, it's Glockenlang. I thought at first that the gun manufacturer was also building amps now. 😁

    As MB ML vintage user i have to vote for it, but i prefer the flat setting not the "V" and more gain on the edge of clipping :)

    MARKBASS FOLLOWED BY TC AS A BACKUP.

    For the price, BAM200 is unbeatable. The EBS and Markbass are pretty awesome but they would have to be to be that much more expensive.
    I would like to see a list of best practice (and easy to carry) bass amps. My old practice bass amp is crap and I would like to have something more interesting...

    Darkglass rules! The best amp of these. Also phil jones sound nice, but i prefer preamps, do you have any videos about them?

    There is a huge ommission in your list. The Trickfish 1K with a Mike Pope preamp. Nothing finer in the marketplace.

    To my ears, the EBS had the most beefy mids. The Markbass had the most low end with a more scooped sound. The Phil Jones had a nice flat tone but with a pleasant slight bump in the low-mids. The Darkglass had the most balanced, yet still musical, flat tone. The TC Electronic was the most transparent, but almost blocky sounding. I would have a hard time choosing between the EBS, the Markbass, and the Phil Jones.

    Great comparisons but why wasn’t the Genzler 800 called to play?

    Darkglass because it's the only head with distortion.
