    I wonder what it's like to be an insect. How sentient are they? Can we only guess about this, or do we actually have strong evidence to suggest what it's like? And how different are their intellects? Are bees for example smarter than flies or ants? All of this is quite fascinating, especially when considering how much moral value we should really give to insects.

    • @matt_trees7734

      They are not conscious, they are literally just programs

    • @antreasAnimations
      @antreasAnimations 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Materialists think
      -> our brains only are sentient
      -> our brain is merely made of atoms
      what differentiates these atoms from the rest of the world?
      -> our brain conducts proccesses
      what differentiates these proccesses from other chemical processes?
      1) We either conclude that some magic force puts sentience in our brains because they've reached a certain complexity, which doesn't make sense, as the brain is simply atoms reacting to its environment, same with other chemical processes, and this would against materialism as it can't be written in stone for sentience to pop up after a certain threshold.
      2) We have to conclude therefore, that either all matter, or more reasonably, all 'processes' are sentient
      Are insects sentient? They are, can insects see,hear,feel? Only to the extend that the sum of their individual parts allow.

    • @Kanzu999
      @Kanzu999 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@antreasAnimations I think it is very plausible that people can talk past each other regarding this point. When I think about what the universe is like, I think about all the kind of stuff that exists in the universe and what the rules are that act upon this stuff. And there are many different kinds of "stuff". Quarks that make protons and neutrons, and then there are electrons and many other weird elementary particles. There is even stuff like photons/light, which is actually just waves in the electromagnetic field. Even pure energy can be thought of as "stuff", especially because E = mc^2.
      If X exists in the universe, I see no reason to not call X "physical". If we find out that consciousness can only exist because of some different kind of energy or any other reason, that reason should be considered physical as well. Something is causing the consciousness to be there. That much is certain.
      So I think I would subscribe to materialism. The weird part to me is that I don't even see why materialism can't work together with something like panpsychism. If all matter happens to be conscious, then this is just a property of all that exists in the universe. I see no reason to not include it as "physical", just like we describe stuff like light and energy as "physical" as well.
      Having said that I don't see how materialism can't work with panpsychism, that doesn't mean that I believe panpsychism is true. But I am actually open to it. I just don't see why I should make the assumption that "all matter must be conscious" just because we know consciousness exists when complex brains exist.

    The fly is just smaller and thus able to react faster.
    Interestingly, I noticed that houseflies tend to fly almost exclusively in 2D arcs, or simple composited of 2D arcs, which massively reduces the number of possible paths a fly might take. I can pick the most likely one based on a few seconds of observation and put my hand there, I catch flies pretty often.
    We have clusterflies where I live. They show up by the thousands, I could probably fill a large trash bag with the amount of flies I vacuum up in the summer.

      Bro the flies must be evolving cause the house flies where I’m at fly in every single direction and when you miss them they will fly directly above your head making you constantly duck and lose focus.. they use to be easy to kill but they’re literally becoming smarter. It knows I won’t be able to swing at my own face so it flies towards it constantly. Eventually it gets tired and sits somewhere only way I can kill them or with spray

    For Earth Day next week, we're making a special gif featuring EVERY SINGLE SPINNING EARTH we've ever animated. We know there are a lot, but we have so many videos that we're finding it hard to search through all of them fast enough. So we thought we'd put the challenge to the crowd. Can you all help us find all of the TED-Ed spinning Earths, across all of our animations?
    If you find one, please comment with both the lesson title and a link, preferably to the moment with the Earth (for example, "The Sun’s surprising movement across the sky, th-cam.com/video/Xm13Kq_E1ik/w-d-xo.html").
    We'll be publishing the GIF on our tumblr (teded.tumblr.com) next week. And we'll include a special thank you to anyone who helps (If you have a tumblr handle and want us to @ you, include that in your comment too)!

      Insects do not experience reality in the same way we do. Just because they have sight and smell does not mean it is relatively comparable to our sensorial experiences. An insect's brain allows it to fight, flee, mate and feed (generally, depending on the organism)- just like us, but it doesn't have anywhere near the same level of consciousness as us nor, as far as we can tell, any level of sentience and self awareness aside from primitive animal reactions.
      So, what makes you think application of a hallucinogenic substance (if that were even possible to execute, not to mention observe) would be at all comparable to states of altered reality that we experience? Insects do not even show the same reactions to pain as mammals do; attempting to observe the effects of a chemical on their system would be fraught with observational issues. Plus, insects, as was mentioned in this video, do not have the same top-down brain network that we do, its more decentralized - so would you apply hallucinogens to the ganglia which control the animals legs and then expect it to experience a vision similar to us when we take LSD? It doesn't even have anywhere near similar levels of experiential reality as us.

    • @diabeticalien3584

      To answer your questions: no. The brain is needed to process and comprehend all the stimulus from being held underwater. Without a brain it would also not have any guidance. Just as the video suggests the insects processes (breathing, mobility, etc) have a high degree of autonomy but they need the brain to coordinate them all.

    I always thought it wasn't convergent evolution, but just that smell (detecting the chemicals around you) was the first real sense that developed in the animal kingdom. And that's why the system is the same in most animals. It was such a fundamental success. Also, apparently that's why it's so deeply associated with our memory centre. That's what I heard a while back.

    It's amazing that humans and insects' evolutionary paths diverged as late as 500 million years ago. That may sound like a long time, but life may have existed for upto 4 billion years on Earth, which dwarfs this number. This makes you really appreciate the diversity of life on Earth.

    Flies are utterly defeated by transparent glass, because there is no such glass in nature, and there was no need for a fly to understand transparent objects.
    I wonder what amazing things we cant comprehend or imagine.

    swatting flies is easy. You always have to swat where you predict it’s GOING to be next, not where it currently IS. Predict the reflex and it works 99% of the time.

      DON'T swat them. They're sentient beings too, and don't deserve to be killed just because they're somewhere you don't want them to be. Imagine if dead flies could talk and he/she asked you, "why did you kill me?" and you say "because you were there."

    I have one question however,
    If we are so apart, and our brains work similarly due to convergent evolution, do they completely perceive everything the same way as ours? Or completely differently? Do they smell pizza the way we do? Or do pizzas smell to them more like rotten feet and molten metal? Are their colors exactly the same? Is their red the same as our red?

    • @ronakbhadra6400
