    If insects suddenly morphed into large beings and decided to wage war on us, there’s no doubt that humans would lose. There are an estimated 10 quintillion individual insects on earth, outnumbering humans by more than a billion to one. So what’s their secret to success? Murry Gans details the reasons behind insect abundance.

      Good Video, but you left out the time when Insects were the dominant land animal.
      Back when there was significantly more O2 in the planets atmosphere, insects were much bigger,
      until an asteroid impact reduced the size of the atmosphere, thus forcing the insects to miniaturize because they breath through their skin...

      The only part of Imperial I actually like is Fahrenheit. See, 0-100 in Fahrenheit is the range that most humans can comfortably live in with proper clothing. Anything outside that range is what most people would consider dangerously cold or dangerously hot. As a friend of mine from Alaska once said: "Once it gets below zero, you don't even really feel it, you just die quicker."
      Compare that to Celsius: 0 is a mild winter day while 100 is certain death.

      +Guilherme Frainer You can see it that way, but that comparison is best understood towards the end of the video, as you might know we humans tend to believe we are the strongest and most fitting animal in the world (which btw is like stating a new anthropocentrism after the theories' fall between the 18th and 19th century), that might be true, it is after all only one race of humans to live everywhere around the world and possibly soon even somewhere on other planets or moons (we are already colonizing space after all) where instead it is different types of insects to live around the world, but that only means they had a better body adaptation than we did, the video is (at least i believe so) trying to state the differences through which us and them both colonized the entire globe successfully and sensitizing us to different kinds of life and how amazing and smart they are in their own way.
      After all science is, just like philosophy, love for knowledge and dedication to research :)

      Bruno Contreras yes, actually they can. Cockroaches have been around for three hundred million years which means they survived through the volcano or asteroid or whatever that killed the dinosaurs and everything else between then and now. Also during the Cold War, studies were done to see the amount of radiation an organism can take and a cockroach scored 6400 rads. Also parasitoid wasps can withstand 100,000 rads and some forms of bacteria would be able to take 1,000,000 rads

    There are a couple of "mistakes" in the video. For example mosquitos do not exactly feed on blood, they feed on nectar like butterflies, but in some species females, although still feeding on nectar, collect blood in order to produce offspring (most of the species don't even need to do this, for example they might need blood only to increase egg production, or if they want to reproduce a second time in their lifes). The other thing is that butterflies and caterpillars do not share the same ecological niche (as you have said, they develop different feeding strategies and this is precisely so they don't have to share a niche). Nice video!

      there a lots of insects because
      1. they reproduce rapidly.
      2. they have an exoskeleton which protects them and allows them to survive harsh conditions.
      3. 85% of insects undergo metamorphosis which means the larvae can occupy a different niche to the adult (they don't compete for food).

    • @TIGAHRAWR
      @TIGAHRAWR 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      also forgot to add that their high reproductive rate means they are quickly able to adapt to their environment via the inheritance of favourable traits to the offspring

  • @AngryKittens

    Actually it's still us. Insects may have more individuals, but in terms of biomass _per species,_ humans still beat every insect species handily. The only other animal species with more biomass than humans on this planet are cows, and that's mostly because we domesticated them so that we can eat them.

      +Viktor6665 Humans should die too, they are hugest parasites Earth ever had. They destroy not only one or few species, but take us of whatever is possible - other humans, plants, rocks...... Implying that one should die only because he's a parasite means only immense amount of high self esteem and self importance. They are the life. Just as you, but not so evolved. If you pretending to be a godlike creature ( I mean creator ) then why not create another life (which humans never succeeded yet) and then destroy another one? That would be at least equal in some kind of way..
