A beautiful song sung by a beautiful woman. It's been a long, long time since I cried hearing a song. Miss Peters, Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent with me. Your eyes can melt hearts and your voice can capture souls, I know, you have mine. Again, thank you.
This album is OUTSTANDING! I love every song & listen to it several times a day! Gretchen & Mary Chapin Carpenter's soothing rich voices are my therapy!
It's all about memories. We are all just a memory in the end. Good or Bad. As I add another year to the calender. This song makes alot of sense. Love her stuff
Hard to say how much this song means to me...my earliest memories are of living in the farmhouse which adjoined the new 'Panoramic Drive-In' on the South Gippsland Highway outside Dandenong, Victoria Australia...my dad was the manager so we spent lots of time down there, playing on the swings and watching movies......I remember looking up into the sky one night with my family and being told "there goes 'Sputnik', a Russian satellite, it must have been about 1956/57....the memory is so clear of all the speakers lined up in rows and the 'Harry Lyme Theme' playing over the crackly speakers....both my parents smoked, that was the time....the line about lighting one cigarette a day....the wisp of smoke in her old ashtray...I feel so nostalgic for such beautiful times with my parents when we were growing up...how I miss them. Thank you Gretchen Peters for giving us the gift of your extraordinary songs. I can't listen to this song without crying (yet)....it will take many more listens to be brave enough.
Thanks for sharing this whistful nostalgia about your parents, and the drive-in your dad managed! In its look at a time period not much later, thinking you might enjoy Gretchen Peters' "Idlewild," if you haven't already come across it? It's sad - and powerful - too. th-cam.com/video/6DIzYBLXpp4/w-d-xo.html
Hello Marshall (and Gretchen) Just saw the video for the first time recently. (Never had the internet before) Beautiful work! George Merriken Leesburg, VA
An incredible poet. Your voice, your superb interpretation of the song , blows my mind. I do tax returns. I write fantasy books. I mix it up with the minds who explore the unknown. You my dear Lady, is something special. THank you.
This album is a brilliant piece of work, congratulations Gretchen. This is my current favourite which I have played hundreds of times a very simple and deep song!
"ARGUING WITH GHOSTS" I get lost in my home town Since they tore the drive-in down I find myself all turned around I get lost in my home town I'm getting hard to recognize They say the mirror never lies I've still got my mama's eyes But I'm getting hard to recognize There's a picture on the wall We got married in the fall Now I don't know those kids at all There's a picture on the wall The years go by like days Sometimes the days go by like years And I don't know which one I hate the most At this same old kitchen table In this same old busted chair I'm drinking coffee and arguing with ghosts Arguing with ghosts I light one cigarette a day I watch it burn and I walk away A wisp of smoke in an old ashtray I light one cigarette a day The years go by like days Sometimes the days go by like years And I don't know which one I hate the most At this same old kitchen table In this same old busted chair I'm drinking coffee and arguing with ghosts Arguing with ghosts I get lost in my home town Since they tore the drive-in down I find myself all turned around I get lost in my home town
One of the best all-time song writers.
Pretty sure the older woman in the video is Marshall Chapman, a great Nashville singer/songwriter.

Such a sad song on growing older. Beautiful. The album is brilliant and I saw you at Cadogan Hall, London, UK

"ARGUING WITH GHOSTS" I get lost in my home town
Since they tore the drive-in down
I find myself all turned around
I get lost in my home town I'm getting hard to recognize
They say the mirror never lies
I've still got my mama's eyes
But I'm getting hard to recognize There's a picture on the wall
We got married in the fall
Now I don't know those kids at all
There's a picture on the wall The years go by like days
Sometimes the days go by like years
And I don't know which one I hate the most
At this same old kitchen table
In this same old busted chair
I'm drinking coffee and arguing with ghosts
Arguing with ghosts I light one cigarette a day
I watch it burn and I walk away
A wisp of smoke in an old ashtray
I light one cigarette a day The years go by like days
Sometimes the days go by like years
And I don't know which one I hate the most
At this same old kitchen table
In this same old busted chair
I'm drinking coffee and arguing with ghosts Arguing with ghosts I get lost in my home town
Since they tore the drive-in down
I find myself all turned around
I get lost in my home town
I'm lost too Gretchen. But does it really matter? Liva la life.
It's about getting older and finding it hard to make sense of the world, memory loss. Very sad and bleak. Loneliness
Heartbreakingly lovely
