    I just wanted to add that the software used can sometimes make a huge difference. I have the cheaper camera from your video and was initially very disappointed. I had poor quality and HUGE lag. I never knew about the built in camera app in windows 10, so had been using VLC as my viewer. Per a comment in this video, I tried the windows 10 camera app, and magically, my scope is working great!

      Yeah! I'm sure there were some driver issues, as I had issues getting the software working properly on the other one. BUT, the cheaper one just had better detail, larger depth of field (which is critical for such small components) and just seemed to look better. So I'm glad I got the cheap one!

      I think it's too low resolution for that. And possibly not high enough magnicication.

  • @larryseibold4287
    @larryseibold4287 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    i have one of the low cost ones. it is a good value and rather interesting. what i really want now is an upgrade without breaking the bank. I want to be able to hold an object and see it clearly at 30x s i move it slowly (try that with this one, it is almost imposable compared to a simple magnifying headset). I would also like to be able to see scratches on metal blades with proper contrast vs supper shinny that accentuate the scratches over showing the true depth of the cut (30x to 100x). A stereo microscope would do it, but they are north of $3000. I am looking for something a lot better than this for well under $500. The strange thing is that these came out 8 years ago, and even though camera sensors have changed a bunch as have processors, these have remained the same.

    • @PureBlood42
      @PureBlood42 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question, bro. I'm also concerned about camera shake and the lighting for coins. I've got 10's of thousands of old lincoln cents to search through for errors, so I really need to get the right one for the money!

    • @richardfox8468
      @richardfox8468 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PureBlood42 I have bought about 20 different types of these microscopes. To be fair the thin inspection tool is for extremely close up work . As you saw on the video if you needed to look for varieties where you need to be right on top on the coin letter or number the microscope on the left is limited . The thin pencil type endoscope is perfect for that. I use both. One for taking pictures of the whole coin up to 42 mm . It's fiddly and you lose a little focus on the periphery on the larger coins but nothing that would spoil the image you get. The pencil one is hopeless even for Lincoln cents as the working area is so small. £9.99-£165 .I have had them all and tbh the cheaper ones are far better value. I have a LEUCHTTURM german one I think it's translated as Lindhurst or something @ £165 comes with a copystand and it's no better or worse than the £9.99. I even chopped back the clear plastic bit at the bottom trying to get closer to the coin to check for over dates but even then it's still too far away for a difinitive view that you called say yes or no. But using both has made life so much easier. I have a microscope that is about 9/10 for distance pictures of whole coins up to half dollar size and about 8/10 for dollar size / 7/10 for crown size and the close up pencil scope is 9/10 on anything individual you want to look at.

      @@richardfox8468 * Thank you for taking the time to offer such an informative reply. Shortly after I posted my original question on here, I ended up getting the Plugable USB microscope and I'm quite happy with its performance while inspecting my error and variety coins. I do not care a great deal for the suction cup mount they provide for the microscope, but it turned out I had this adjustable camera copy stand tucked away in my closet. So instead of using the bendy suction cup thing that came with the Plugable Microscope, I'm now using the slider/adjuster that came with my copy stand and works great. Now, as my USB Plugable Microscope camera is mounted securely and face down on that metal slider, I have complete control over the distance between the microscope and the coin being viewed. If anyone is confused about what I'm talking about, just Google 'adjustable copy stand' and look at the parts that are included and you'll usually see a slotted metal track-like thing. You would mount your Plugable USB microscope (or other microscope/camera) to that slider thing, in place of using the bendy suction cup mount that's included with the Plugable USB microscope. This is great way to have complete freedom when you want to change the microscope to subject distance, quickly and on the fly! Regards everyone!

      I cannibalized a metal gooseneck off of a cheap microphone screen purchased from Amazon. I think the brand was Neewer. 1/4-20 threads on both ends, so it’s been a useful photography/videography accessory. That might come in handy for you if the one on the microscope wears out.

    Head to head on which one can take "still" pictures the cheaper one wins. But is there a difference in input lag? Could I work off the video of the cheaper one in real time or is it like a 5 second delay between my movements?

    • @TheBob_
      @TheBob_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any kind of USB camera device will inherently have a bit of delay. Judging by other videos of the cheaper Plugable model featured in this video though it isn't too bad at all for real-time use. Maybe a couple hundred milliseconds at most, about like your average webcam. Also he says at 6:50 that the real-time delay for the more expensive model here was terrible.

    You never said anything about the software installation for some reason. The one that was shipped to me had files on only a mini CD. Since I didn't have a CD and WIN 10 doesn't support it, I was hooped. After several emails and frustrating negative reviews I finally was sent a link to a download site to acquire the drivers I needed. I am assuming that they will enable the device finally. A simple website address in the instructions would have made life so much easier. Please advise possible users in the future about this major oversight with links to the driver software.
