one of those non-sparking wrenches was made of Aluminum Bronze. You can see the mark on the handle "ALBR". Every so often, we in the foundry used to make Aluminum Bronze hammers for Weapons Dept. on the ship.

I first learned to operate a lathe on a Colchester made in 1950 and it was more modern than that one. I'd say that was pre WW2 or post WW2 when Britain was exporting to save itself. It looks to be in super condition .Colchester made thousands of Quality lathes for Colleges across the British Commonwealth and those ex school machines still bring top dollar .As for the $200 Mill, it was probably cheap because it had dust on it...

As said by others you have acquired VARIAC’s - which are quite useful. I mounted mine in a 8x8x4 PVC junction box and installed a NEMA 5-15 socket on the side of box + a fuse on the input mains. This then may be used to test many things by gradually increasing the voltage. Resistive loads such as soldering iron may be powered lamps etc. Motors may be tested but not run effectively. Want an adjustable temperature hot plate for UR coffee - no problem.

The dc drives are a great buy. I've converted both my drill presses and a bandsaw to dc. Full torque at nearly zero speed. Automation direct for cheap but good ac or dc motors and and drives

  • @silverbullet7434

Capeing chisel, gear drive motors can be used on bandsaw to convert to metal. And even on a drill press pending on its output speed. Good deal on the first video was the Albrecht chuck . .Nice haul for the day

At around 8 minutes those pliers look like the tool you use for crimping on those rings for fixing airhoses. I cant rrmember what theyre called but they are a ring with two ears on it and you crimp the ears down to tighten the ring around the hose.

  • @TheInfoworks

Pete, just a few things, the variable control is a variable transformer. This works on AC only as it is a transformer not a resistor. I use these to change the output voltage of a battery charger, especially when charging 2v traction batteries from a big 12v charger (I've done a video about this). The 90 degree worm gearbox is a good find and the ac motors look useful for the many machine builders and repairers on youtube. Cheers, Andy

    • @dougankrum3328
      @dougankrum3328 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yeah, those are fairly expensive too. Careful on what you 'power up' though, these are usually only 1-2 amps output for that size...you can vary the speed of a DC motor by changing the AC input to the speed control/s... For most of this stuff on your list of 'steals'....1-2 items is worth the asking/sale prices.

Yes, the variable transformer or variable auto-transformer is a very useful thing. Just make sure the knob is in the zero volt position when you power it up or you may damage the carbon brush.

DC motors may be cheaper than you think. Most treadmills use DC motors in the >1 H.P. range. Most of the time you can find these for free when the belt goes out and they stop working. Most of the time the motor is fine. There are numerous TH-cam videos on how to set these up without the complicated treadmill controls.

Auctions can be interesting. I bought a Bridgeport Series 1, 2J at a school auction. It has a shaper attachment on the back of the ram. It was an online auction, I thought the tool dealers would drive the price way out of line, so I didn't even bother bidding on it. About 1/2 hour before it ended I noticed it had not bid up much. I decided to bid, just so the dealers wouldn't steal it. No one else bid, so I got it for $937. It was in amazing condition, probably only 200 hours on it, the chrome ways were perfect. I sold the shaper for $1000 and took the machine to our makerspace. If it were not for the buyer premimum and transportation, I wouild have made money and the makerspace get a free Bridgeport.. You can see the machine in some of the videos I've been doing for the makerspace.

We have had some incredible things happen while building out The MakerBarn. We got a 25" Hegner scroll saw for $29, it had motor/controller problems. But being an electrical engineer comes in handy some times. A 14" Delta bandsaw for $80. It needed some parts, but used parts for those machines are easy to find. One person donated a big wide belt sander, just as several members started building cutting boards. School auctions can be quite good because many of the nicer machines are reserved for advanced students (and the instructor) and have very low hours. Here I am speaking to the choir.

Did you get that Kirby vacuum cleaner? I restore old Kirbys. They are incredible machines. Even the older ones beat the crap out of any 1-200 dollar Walmart vacuum. They usually need nothing other than a new belt, good cleaning and polish, and a brushroll adjustment! Occasionally you'll find one with worn bearing or a broken fan. Both parts are very cheap and easy to replace. The current off-white Amodel plastic fan that Kirby makes is damn near indestructible. The old metal and grey lexan fans are brittle and easy to break with nails and coins and big rocks.

DC drives are ok but the problem is that they dog down and drop speed under varying load. Some better ones have a feedback to the drive so they can read the rpm and boost the voltage to keep it running at a constant speed. The rpm sensor can be mounted anywhere like the spindle of a lathe or something.

My 15/16 & 1 1/8 wrenches are the most beat up used tools in the set🤕, I got thinking and realized it almost has no use on machine tools. Plenty of use with 5/8 & 3/4 bolts though. Probably everyone has certain tools that get heavy use. I would have a large pile of 7/16, 1/2, 9/16 sizes if all the lost ones would show up.

it is indeed a cape chisel, its used in any application where you need to chisel in a tight space where the sides of a normal cold chisel would bind. Like a keyway i suppose. That is why it looks so unusual since the cutting edge has to be wider then the body but still needs to be well supported.

How much did that Gerstner go for?
The ”variable resistor” looks like an auto-transformer, which is much more efficient. Unfortunately it doesn't work as a speed control for AC motors, which are frequency-locked. You could use it on a universal motor, thought.
The chisel is a cape chisel, no idea what they are used for.

Not a "bad" haul. If you don't need pry bars, cut the ends off and you've got some nice hex steel for projects. I think Richard Ashman had the first correct answer on the cape chisel. Had to get my wife a new vacuum. Tore the old one apart, kept all the metal parts for reuse, including the 12amp motor. That motor is 16 years old but has plenty of life left in it. Am making a small belt grinder out of it. See you next time.

Those Colchester lathes aren’t 2 bad, the only problem with them is that parts are very difficult to obtain.
    Ps
I’m looking forward to see you use that mallet 🤭😂

Holy smoke, someone stole that Enco!
Still some nice scores there Mr Pete, considering what a good motor costs. Those controllers are pricey too.
Mrs. Pete may meet Thelma some day when she comes down to the basement looking for her toothbrush and baking pans..... ;o)

Dang, I got the chisel question wrong so I just deleted it before anybody saw it! Enjoyed the review of your goodies....however, I missed out on a big auction yesterday and I'm still aggravated over it. I'm sure you've been there. Hey if you come up with any little stuff that would work in a Craftsman 109 hit me up on my channel. As always.... appreciate ya.

Still looks to me as a great haul. I just can't believe all this is over just $100. Around here, I could keep half of that haul and sell the other half and buy me an old milling-machine with this selling cash ;)

Sniff ... sniff ... is that something on the lines of an arduino or a stepper motor I smell ? Will thelma be appearing from a trapdoor sitting on a perfectly controlled spinning device? Certainly some of the other creators are making good use of an old chuck attached to a motor and a small box of tricks to make it spin ... if you can get all those motors running you'll be able to spin a truck!!

machine equipment in the Northeast is dirt cheap , machine equipment down south is wildly overpriced .. Im guessing used machines in Illinois don't go for much . I think it all depends how much large scale production work was taking place in the area 50 years ago..
