I listen to this perfectly conducted and played Rienzi's Ouverture through the years again and again. And I always get goose pimples from it. And I love how sensitive and gentle Klaus Tennstedt conduct it!! Thank you!! And thank to the entire LPO for translating Tennstedt's guiding moves into a celestial sound which makes you feel how subtle and romantic could be Wagner .
@@robp4297 I've heard it many times. It's excellent, well articulated and interpreted, typical of Reiner & the CSO. However, for me, it doesn't have the same primal energy and "oomph" of this performance. To each their own.
Oh yes, me too! This work and this performance of it lifts my spirits in a way few other pieces do.., Wonderful Tennstedt and wonderful playing by the orchestra. I do so love Wagner, Thanks so much, You Tube for posting this.
Simply the best rendition I have ever heard, the arrangement, the timing, the subtly in volume, the horn section, like the gods themselves performed. A rare treat for the senses.
It's definitely a smoother, restrained performance, and very enjoyable. What makes music fascinating is the interpretation. This would be almost the polar opposite of Solti, but I enjoy both styles, and reckon Dick Wagner would as well, as he had an open mind.
To hold such a magisterial tempo without the slightest hint of dragging is conducting of the highest order! As well as Wagner, Tennstedt's Mahler performances are among the best ever recorded - give them a try.
Tennstedts Mahler 1 with Chicago SO is the absolute best piece of all times. It is unbelievable, outstanding and wonderful. Although he was a Violinist, he really pulls the best out of the Brass. I will never know why he is the most underestimated conductor in Germany until today!
@@nickosullivan6264 You certainly got an adverse reaction (below) and indeed must have expected it, I imagine, seeing you didn't attempt to justify your preposterous proposition with any rational argument. Just trolling? Or do you have something to say?
What better person than Herr Tennstedt as a German to so understand Wagner's music snd bring out his wonderful understanding of this Great Masters music and also that he really by adding his complete understanding of Wagner's music . The LPO are musicians extraordinaire ! Wagner's music is Music and had nothing to do with his political outlook ! Recognize his music as GREAT Music. Also let us not forget the loss of Herr Tennstedt while he had come into his prime !!!!!
Absolutely wonderful and definitive interpretation of this overture of Rienzi. The conduct of Klaus Tennstedt is superb and the orchestra is extraordinary.
Tennstedt was one of a kind, a wonderful conductor who always brought out the best from the orchestra. Maestros of his caliber are very few and far between. I'm glad that many of his performances have been preserved for us to relish all these years after his passing.
This performance could be the one of the best live Wagner "Overture Rienzi I'm so proud Tokyo has such a magnificent classical concert hall !! I miss so much I've been lived in London since late 80's but there is no symphonic concert hall in London I'm afraid I wonder why & how come ...... !!!?
London had an acoustically brilliant concert venue in the Queen's Hall in Portland Place almost adjacent to the BBC's Broadcasting House. Unfortunately it was bombed to smithereens by the Luftwaffe in 1941. I refrain from further comment.
Somewhere, sometime, a young Austrian teenager heard this brilliant piece of music, and decided to totally dedicate and sacrifice his life to elevate the German people to heights never before seen, and to fight against a global tyranny. It may not seem like it now, but I believe his dreams will come to be realized.
I have been a confirmed lover of Wagner's beautiful music for a long time. Has any one else of my age group (67) ever noticed at the end of Reinzi that there is a small segment of the music that sounds like Mighty Mouse's " Here I Come to Save the Day"
Maestro Tennstedt nails it!!! Nuance, detail, and ambiance! It's all there! Even Richard Wagner (who hated his own opera for being too conventional and for appealing to a conventional public) would have LOVED IT!!! Bravo Maestro Klaus and bravo to LPO!
Tremendous memories of working with a legendary musician. Klaus died over 20 years ago and I still miss working with him. Great ping pong player, as well! The flow that he created was stirring.
I have enjoyed Tennstedt's radio concert recordings with The Minnesota Orchestra for many years. The comments I've read from you and many other musicians who played under his direction are always enthusiastic in their praise of this unique and marvelous conductor.
I was listening to this sublime interpretation while on my exercise bike. I was definitely pedalling faster near the end. Tennstedt: wonderful, how does he do it
This Wagner performance in Tokyo was a great moment- under Tennstedts baton the LPO was one of the best orchestras in the world-and then Welser-Möst, Masur and Jurowski ruined it!!! So much thanks for posting this unique rendition!
I was working midnight shift at Refinery. 1980s.....AND THIS CAME ON ...the radio I had placed several labs away.... UNBELIEVABLE EFFECT ON ME. AND it was AMOCO that put it there. I went into a SAMADI. sp?
This is a wonderful performance with Tennstedt's tempi and rubato judged to perfection. New to me is the slowness of 'the turn' at the beginning of the main theme - half speed, but it sounds just right when you get used to it
Terrific rendition! The Donald Rumsfeld lookalike (principle trumpet) is playing a D trumpet, for which the part is scored. I didn't have one of those when we did Rienzi in college, so I had to transpose :-)
I have forgotten how simply awesome this overture was. A masterpiece!
My orchestra is playing this right now...it is even more amazing being in the music!
🥰😘💪
Your just bad. too many negative influences maybe.
My favorite overture. Magnificently performed. No one writes for brass like Wagner.
Prokofiev maybe 🙂
