    Just to be clear:
    "Standard" & French shell = 68mm wide
    Italian shell = 70mm wide
    Raleigh shell = 71mm wide
    Some MTB shell = 73mm wide
    Bomber shell = 77mm wide
    68mm shell = 53mm centre on axle measured between bearing faces (3 series axle)
    70mm shell = 55mm centre on axle measured between bearing faces (5 series axle)
    73mm shell = 57mm centre on axle measured between bearing faces (7 series axle)

    I'm thinking restoring old Raleigh Rialto back on roads, and I'm facing same challenge. Shell is fortunately 71mm width. That bottom bracket was never opened, so it was quite a work to get cotter pins out and fixed cup off. I think about going cartridge bottom bracket with Phil Wood 26tpi cups. Phil Wood bottom bracket would be ideal but it is very expensive. I believe standard cupless cartridge would work with those cups aswell, which I can buy cheaply. 71mm being close to 68mm, I think Phil Wood cups would work because they screw into the bb shell.

    I enjoy your posting of old bike restoration and rescue.. In my nearly 40 years of experience On French and Italian threaded BB 's I found that it is super important to get the fixed cup ( right side) cups in very tight... I usually take a lead hammer to the wrench and give it a few firm strikes.... On the Raleigh recessed style cups it is a bit more difficult... Have you considered drilling and tapping for a small set screw to secure the adjustable cup.. that you you can still adjust it as needed... Cheers.. Z

      HA. I have most of the old stuff memorised now. I wouldn't be able to tell you about press fit and boost etc now though. No idea on modern gear!

    Well this answers that exact question regarding my clubman. The cottered cranks are fine but if I ever did want to switch to a square taper now I know. Next make a video telling me why there's a hole in the BB shell with that easily removed brass plug 😂

    Did you have to fit different size ball-bearings to this BB? Currently changing the gearing on a '69 Raleigh and the ball bearings are loose instead of in a race as shown in the video. Cheers!

      No they're "standard" 1/4" bearings but I just used caged ones.

    What about getting the bottom bracket milled down at an engineers so the threadless would work properly, would you be able to get a long enough axle for the cranks to clear the chainstays.

      That's a possibility too, although I'd use the MTB axle and Raleigh cups still.

    I have not seen cottered BB since the 1970's , where did this come from? did raleigh really make bikes with cottered cranks in the 80's and 90's?

      Yup, in to the 80s at least. Mainly on the lower end models though.

      @@MonkeyShred did a little research, kind of interesting, it looks like raleigh in the early 1980's wanted to build a bike similar to the cruisers that were being ridden in marin california, kind of like beach cruisers adapted for off road riding. the width of the bottom bracket, 77 mm ?, I recall some downhill bikes having 83 mm bottom brackets, I don't imagine many of these made it to the US

      My Raleigh Chiltern (one of the many 3speed sports models) was built in 1991.. with cottered cranks.

    Put bearings in either side first. Then it should fit snug, no wobble

    Any ideas how to cut a Raleigh sized shell down to a 68mm size? I know it can be done with a hacksaw if your skilled enough but no bike shop i know does it, i have a mk3 Moulton but they use a Raleigh 26tpi and around a similar sized shell to your bike, rethreading is the easy part its the shell reduction i want to see, i cannot find any videos how to do it, i believe a refacing tool is not up to the job on removing that much material, any ideas?

      Good question Des. I've never done it myself before but I do have to tackle it soon on a BSA Twenty. I'm pllaning on using some careful marking...a grinder and files. If you can find a engineering firm that could somehow fit the frame in a mill... I think that would be the quickest and most caccurate way to take down the size on both sides.

      A single speed, or 3 speed, or 5 speed bike (from factory). Now a 14 speed.
