Understanding Leverage is one of my 3 Building Blocks of Success for Offensive Line Play. Striking your opponent with a rising blow by having your hips low creates tremendous power and allows an Offensive Lineman to successfully generate power.
Football coaches love to say (or yell) "Low Pads Win" or "Get Your Pads Down". These are good coaching points and playing with lower pads is a great way to succeed in football. However, I believe the better coaching phrase should be "Low Pads Win!" Just lowering your shoulder pads & helmet doesn't put you in a better position and often is unsafe.
For an Offensive Lineman to lower their hips and generate they must flex their ankle and bend their knees to load the hips. Of course, an offensive lineman's feet must remain in contact with the ground ( • Building a Lineman: Fe... ) and their knees must be aligned, ( • Building a Lineman: Pr... ) but the hips are the source of power.
One great coaching point is to pay attention to an Offensive Lineman's hips as they leave their stance. Coaches stand off to the side or film yourself from the side and see if your hips are staying low after the snap. If an Offensive Lineman's hips are rising before striking the defender they need to work on flexibility and strengthening their hips over a greater range of motion to stay low.
