    The best lens comparison video I have seen on TH-cam! I'll say it again for the people in the back. THE BEST LENS COMPARISON VIDEO I HAVE SEEN. This is extremely useful and the detail in your presentation is great. Thank you for a great video. I just started editing my first documentary and felt more comfortable with a lot of your tips and knowledge you have shared. One thing that I think would be a good future topic is how to transition or go between different interviews.

  • @eifionjones8513
    @eifionjones8513 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It’s good that you did the distance test too, gives a much better sense of how they translate a medium shot. 24 and 35 are usually my faves on super 35. I actually find a 28mm on super 35 a really nice field of view to work with. Normal ish, bit of width to bring in some surroundings and perspective whilst having enough compression to pull in the background a bit.

    Great and useful comparison! Personally I like the 50mm as it delivers a cinematic look but not too much, it still makes me feel like I'm sitting in front of her but in a cool way if you get my drift. The 85 and 135mm look very interesting too, I would use those two to interview an actress talking about her upcoming film for example. Thanks Mark, sooo helpful for choosing my next baby😍

    For anyone wondering what a 50mm lens is for super35, the answer is...a 50mm lens. The whole full frame equivalence thing is a bastard notion that should never have been turfed up in the first place. Hiscock was famed for using a 50mm lens to get the perspective his movies are famed for. The film format used then is the same as super35, in fact it was called super35 then, too on film. He would pick up and use, wait for itttt, a 50mm lens. He didn't go "what will that be on super35? Should I be putting a 35mm on?" because super35 was the primary film stock then, and through to the digital era and to this day remains a favourite sensor size.
    If you're analysing the greats, anyone watching this, from before the digital era and wonder "okay but what lens would I need to replicate that?" You're asking a pointless question. Hiscock used a 50mm lens, so if you're using a super35 sensor equipped camera, just grab a 50mm lens. I'm trying to make this as simple as possible. Whatever lens your chosen great used back then, that's what you should pick up and stick on now. If they were famed for using the 50mm lens, pick up a 50mm. If they used a 35mm predominantly, then pick up a 35mm, it's as simple as that.

  • @OCUBOX

    Thanks For these Mark, very useful, even though we use most of these lenses, it's good to have a reference where you're able to see the perspective shifts.

    MB, this was brilliant. I DID NOT skip to 2:16 because you engaged us so eloquently. I needed and was pleased to hear your rationale. I am a newbie using a Sony ZV-E10 and toying between either a Sigma 16mm or 30mm lens. I will be limited to shooting a small space. Much like the 5-foot distance you have in your video. But, at 3-5 feet I will be smack up against my wall or backdrop. Question, what would I need to consider (lens-wise) if I want to do talking to camera videos as well as full body exercise demonstrations? I know your focus is on prime and fullframe gear but, I'd love it if you coulc drop me some crumbs...

    • @markbone

      I use a 24mm on full frame for all my TH-cam talking head stuff. It would probably be wide enough for work out also but you might want to check out the 2.8 16-35mm from Sony. We love it. We own two
