Philosophy is a light to our life.

One problem my father immediately pointed out is that science is actually constantly busy with problems that may have no definite answer. Physics and medicine being the most concerned. Philosophy also isn't exclusively occupied by unanswerable questions, many have been answered, especially in the last 200 years.

does the study of skin-cancer have any value for those not struck by it?

Of course. Even if the individual does not have this condition it is possible to have it in the future. And moreover, it is very likely that someone close to him have this affection.

Stoica's answer is not satisfactory to me because it relates the value of the study of a subject to the (potential) proximity of the student and the subject. Let us assume, for instance, that all humans who ever live in this world will never be affected by black holes, in any way. In such a world, is the study of black holes without value then? No. It is my belief that the value in studying a complex scientific subject lies primarily in training the student to sharpen their skills for deciphering truth from falsity and proposing better theories about their subject or the world. Even if no valuable results are produced in their study of skin cancer if they have critically engaged with some of the problems in the subject, they have become better people, quite similar to the argument by Russell in the defense of the study of philosophy in this video.

What in the actual fuck is this. I was assigned to read this in class and I couldn’t literally read it because of the language in it. So I ended up here. He wrote all this to say “yeah so philosophy just doesn’t have provable answers”
What??? WHAT???? I hate this class. I don’t understand what I’m supposed to get from reading this, it doesn’t make sense and is a very long winded way to say “philosophy is here so you can ask questions and not always have definite answers”

Julia you have learned an enormous amount. A new subject is sometimes hard to crack and sometimes you need a different tool to do it (TH-cam or Wikipedia instead of class notes or a book, or a teacher). Work is hard and sometimes unprofitable. "Philosophy just doesn't have provable answers" Wow! Is the same as "Philosophy has unprovable answers". By writing this complaint you are actually being philosophical.......

His point REALLY isn't that philosophy has no definite answers, it's only his initial point, he goes on to enumerate all the ways in which it is useful and necessary.
If you could take the time to listen to this more than once, you might find that every time you relisten you get more out of it, then again, you might not...

Somebody talking about their point of view and calling it "Philosophy" as if there is something more to it. If you don't like what they say then why waste your time. Take up something that gives you your own fulfilment.
