I don't understand the idea that they don't seem "very enthusiastic". If you are seriously asking the girl you love, over and over, how deep their love is, there should be more of a very thoughtful, an almost pleading sense in your vocals. It would seem very odd to be asking that question to a girl while you are doing the moonwalk, breakdancing or doing cartwheels.
Love is serious. And he's asking her how deep her love is. Nothing to take lightly. Also it's just part of the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever. So their delivery is different on each song.
The lights were a product of needing nothing but 3 handsome dudes with heavenly voices to look at. (That's what my girl says anyways).

I think they are serious in the video because it's a story they are telling and they are professing their love for the woman but they don't know how she feels and that's why they are asking How deep is your love.

The reason the Bee Gees created songs the way they did is because none of the brothers could read or write music, you may find The Making of Tragedy an interesting video to watch because it shows them actually making a song it also had all the same players, Blue Weaver and Alhby Galutin and Karl Richardson who also co produced this song, in fact Barry tells Blue Weaver to change the way he plays part of the song so it's almost like you are there, also I think the point of the video was to make them look wistful to go along with the song
So I'm more classically trained but my father can't read or write music like a lot of people. It's such a different angle. I can't play by ear but I can read pretty good. I understand why certain things happen but I can't just play it. I need it written.

This video is before MTV, they didn't really do music videos back then..so there isn't much thought put into them. I don't think the lights are symbolic, in my opinion. But as usual the BeeGees song is amazing. Glad we have video of them though. We fans cherish any thing preserved about the BeeGees.

This track was for Saturday Night Fever, and the disco period had already begun. If you watch the movie with the dance floor, the floor had lights. It was the disco era, dance clubs had lights everywhere. Made it exciting while dancing!

My guess is, the lights are symbolic to the movie as the movie is about life in a disco.
