    I use ceramic blades exclusively and always strop. If you’ve cased the leather properly and strop often there’s no reason to sharpen on a stone. I usually wait til the wax stops releasing air. But I mix orange oil and stearic acid in the wax for flexion and durability.

      If you're doing blunted steel they'll certainly hold up, but they get murdalized more for sure given the narrow edge of steel. I'd also be tempted to experiment more with water hardening if I was working more with the HEMA community.
      But I do have HEMA people buying my patterns and making armor with them on the regular, but I personally don't do it much.

    You should do a test with Skallagrim to see just how durable the waxed leather is!

    • @DarkHorseWorkshop
      @DarkHorseWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Waxed leather vs. sharpened steel is very much a loss for waxed leather. The only reason to wax harden leather armor is 1: for blunt force combat like rattan fighting, 2: it's easy to do. Baking or boiling in some form of cuir bouilli is far more period and protective against steel.

      @@DarkHorseWorkshop hehe, had to go back and watch your video to refresh.
      Always enjoyable viewing your videos.
      Times change friend.
      My live steel combat group disbanded in 2020. And I could not get my own order up and running. Rare it is, for people to commit & follow through. And I no longer participate in gaurding castle at festival.
      Your answer, now that my brain has caught up;
      Wax Cord is very resilliant in day to day use of standing, walking, running, climbing, carrying various things for my elderly host & hostess to promote their ideal life in a Tn castle.
      However, despite using the trench trick to keep my stich work just below the surface of my armor and double stitching...the wax cord can fray & break down - beneath the riggors of Live Steel fighting in rain soaked environments.
      In middle Tn we can experience all four seasons in one week's time during May.
      We found that anchored straps on bracers & elbow cobs don't hold as long as we prefer them to. So, re-stitching before each practice & event became cumbersome. Oh, ofcourse we embraced our duties. 😇
      Well, it was discovered that carpet cord is much more resiliant and still looks period.
      On castle grounds we looked period and sharp & less repairs were required between practices and full on combat.
      Most people whom are just discovering these two sports are likely thinking two guys going at it like I tag you I get a point, reset.
      He tags my head and gets two points, reset, and so on.
      What they discover once in this sport are full on battles taking place in a somewhat organized fashion. You know, its all on behalf of one's own honor vs everybody else's honor.
      That said, sh** happens & you gotta be trained too survive it the victor.
      Its just about the individual, the one...its about the Order you belong to, the House you represent.
      So, we often locked arms, shields, rolled on the ground, passing from 1st to our 2nd, before scrounging for whatever became our 3rd.
      I lost to a cloak pin, once. Really.
      It was fascinating & educational in a very memorable way amongst good friends.
      As it should be.
      Though some people just get bent and there is that one person for the day, in his own special way.
      So, from all entanglements armor straps and leather stitching gets pulled everywhich way with increasing intensity.
      The carpet cord held up. Its nearly indestructable, provided the user keeps his gear clean between practices & events.

    • @gonsolop2429
      @gonsolop2429 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Per my comments; Veterens sufferring from PTSD and whom are getting the help they need are going to find these sports theropuetic. Nothing better than passing blows & sweating it out. Its all meant to be in good fun. You support group are your House members.
      That said, for rest of us with stable minds...we must be prepared for any fighter just having a bad day, where...his or her life just flipped a switch. So, its important too know how to mentally & emotionally process their switch in a matter of seconds. And remember, you did sign that waiver. Just be prepared & push yourself to be noble about it. 😎

    I like your method for doing the brass rivets. I actually do copper rivets that way for halters and bridles when I want a more wild west look but I have a tool that peens it evenly when you stick the stem of the rivet into it. Have you tried that method? If so, do you prefer the anvil-peen hammer method?

    • @DarkHorseWorkshop
      @DarkHorseWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure what you mean by sculp, but if you mean carve the leather with images then no you can't. Well.. you could cut it and it would woooork technically but it would look like crap. It needs to be vegetable tanned leather with the process I layed out here.

    • @stuartcommon4651
      @stuartcommon4651 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can check the tannage pretty simply by cutting a small piece, if the cross section is a greyish colour then it's chrome tanned and won't work, as said it needs to be veg tanned. Bridle can also be worked but it's not so easy because af all the fats and grease that's been put into it, for bridle you need to properly case it first (slightly damp sawdust in an airtight container with the leather for 24 hours) which works with English bridle like Sedgwick, I imagine it would be the same for American bridle which is tanned differently. Wickett & Craig I think they're called, they do an English bridle in the US, would love to see something like this done with it, wouldn't need the hot wax either

    • @stingraybob8933
      @stingraybob8933 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know some old leathers were finished with cod oil, which may be the source. Could also be other animal fats in the finishing process, that have gone rancid over the years. There's not really a great solution for getting oils out of leather, but you could give it a few soak and dry sessions to see if it helps.

      For rattan combat in the SCA a certain level of rigidity is required. I find it a rather easy no brain way of accomplishing that. If I had time I would attempt to make it, but that takes actually paying attention. Most of the people making armor for rattan fighting wax it.

    As a hobbyist beekeeper of non-native invasive agricultural livestock honeybees*, most beeks wax dip their wooden hive boxes so find your local beekeeping clubs and see when they wax dip, they may allow leather to be dipped for a small fee. Some clubs are very strict, new bare wood boxes only, others are more lax, most use paraffin microcrystalline & resins and some also add some real beeswax for smell. Those wax temps are around 270-285*F
    *True, honeybees are not native to the entire US Continent. (Europe and Africa native range) Beekeeping is not conservation, it's agriculture. It's not good for our native pollinators nor the environment we've learned. Outcompeting for forage, transmitting diseases and viruses to native pollinators and most likely propagating more non-native plants than native plants = bad for the ecosystem. ONLY native plants (and animals) help to heal an ecosystem. Beekeeping is good for people, healthy hive products, money, pollination services for unsustainable ag practices, but it's not helping the environment. Hence we are downsizing our beekeeping to eventually nothing. Located in SE PA.
