    nice build. Very sensible to reference actual historical armour for functional shapes, cut and sizes too. People today sometimes forget it was very expensive safety equipment for very rich men who wanted to survive mortal combat, so needed to work well, keep them alive and look great too.

    • @SkillTree
      @SkillTree  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Why thank you, Sir Kingsley! It was actually a lot of fun to parse out how to design it in a way that would be comfortable and feel as though the shape would be functional. Thank you for watching!

    Hey Cl3ver, fun fact: you can erase sharpie with dry erase marker. All you have to do is just scribble over top of your lines then erase. Alternately, just wipe down with hand sanitizer. The alcohol breaks down the ink. And I know we all have a plethora of sani now lol

    • @SkillTree
      @SkillTree  ปีที่แล้ว +31

      That IS a fun fact! Thank you!!!

    • @blackmoon8459
      @blackmoon8459 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      And if the sanitizer doesn’t take the marker off enough, a bottle of high % (90%+) iso alcohol covers many sins. Its also great for general cleaning, electronics, finishing 3d prints, heck, you can even use it for its basic purpose, sterilizing wounds (though i don’t recommend it)

      Wet erase markers are going out of style, but are still very much available, don't smudge much, and wipe off with water.

      @@SkillTree I paused halfway through the video to say that as well, lol. Also: Now that you have the chest piece, you'll need to make Tassets (a belt of segmented plates that protect the thighs and groin), and Pauldrons (Shoulder armor that laces into the strap at the top of the chest piece). And don't forget the Gorget!

    Those triangle leather clippings you have left over could be used to fill a beanbag or cushion. I wouldn't mind seeing a medieval pillow build, like the pillow-chairs people used to have around the dinner table in the old days

      @DrachenGothik666 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Huh. Dunno if I'd want to lay on top of something stuffed with leather triangles. They'd be stiff and pokey. Ouch. I'd almost want to dye them different colours and use them as tesserae--little tiles--and form patterns with the colours.

  • @roymaxson5985
    @roymaxson5985 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Just so you know.
    You should don padded armor before you don the leather, gambison, ring, or chain mail.
    The padded armor protects you from bruising and chafing.
    If you decide to go further.
    You can then add a layer of steel plate mail.
    There are massive gaps in your leather armor.
    Leather armor is good for firmer padding against blunt weapons and resistant to slashing weapons.
    Scale mail is designed to cause slashing strikes to glance off the scale. Additionally scale mail is interlocking with other scales. This 3 layer scale is designed to prevent any upward thrusts or stabs from swords or spears.
    Typically you would don padded then chain/ring then scale mail for this armor type.
    Happy crafting.

    For tiny leather scraps, you could cut them down a bit more and use them with the hole punches and bevel off cuts in stuffing for little stuffed items, like a doll a character would make for one of the kids always hanging around, or little magical crafting poppets, or even just some cushions to keep with the tent. The triangles would also look cool as some kind of teeth!

    For people who can’t afford giant sheets of leather, getting colored vinyl from hobby shops works great and is much cheaper.
    I got some black, alligator textured, faux leather from a local fabric shop and made some awesome arm bracers.
    I’m excited to get some more for a full armor project.
    For extra thickness of material, just glueing it to a second piece of vinyl backing gives it more rigidity and durability.

    For the triangles: leather covered chest, with the triangles contact cemented down as decoration?
    Or rivet each corner together to make studded leather leg guards? Like the cloth ones you guys just did, but leather.
    Or, chop them up even finer and fill a leather ball with them. Or a tailor ham.

  • @RenLafleur

    Instead of dry erase, a Wet Erase marker might be the perfect middle between a sharpie and a dry erase marker. It won't smudge while you handle the form but it can be erased with a damp paper towel/rag really easily!

    I almost never apply dye over dye, however, in this application I think it works. At least on camera, it's a pretty subtle way of tying the two colors together. The black is still black, but it has a slight green tint to it. I'm sure it's different in person, but at least on camera I like the effect.

  • @jarekmace1536

    You can add spaulders/pauldrons by putting a buckle and loop on the underside, allowing them to attach to the shoulder strap of the cuirass. Alternatively, add a buckle to the cuirass shoulder strap and a tongue to the pauldron. Either way put an adjustable loop at the lower end of the pauldron to keep it centered on the arm.

    About those triangle leather clippings, maybe you can thread them on a piece of string. Either overlapping or with knots in between so they're wider spaced, you could even dye them differently and have a nice spot of colour on your outfit. I see those as tassels on a sword hilt or a good luck charm the character once received on their belt etc. Or put initials on each and keep it as a list for revenge of all the people that wronged them xD

    In the areas of overlap, I would have suggested skiving the leather. It would thin the leather to make areas such as the 3 layer section easier to handle. It would also be good on the edges of interior panels to improve the feel with a smaller edge.

    You know, I'll bet that you could make scale mail this way too, hanging your underarmour on your golem and then using warbla and a heat gun to curve the scales into the proper shape before attaching them with leather grommets. The grommets would be hidden by the scale layered above it.

    That armor is SWEET! It's clear how much you've learned since making your first piece of armor. :D

    Honestly I prefer the way Cl3ver is now, his older first videos he seemed like his personality was imprisoned, and he didn’t have as much passion, it seemed like you weren’t as interested as much as you are now. Now you’re smiling, your passionate, you have that glint that shows your actually happy to be here doing the thing you do. All in all present Cl3ver is top tier

    Here's an alt tip for riveting thick layers of leather. Use pop/blind rivets with flat-top cone studs.
    I found that the conventional rivets in typical leather LARP armor kept busting wherever I flexed (not bragging, srsly). When I repaired the armor using pop/blind rivets with cone studs, the join held stronger than the leather!

    I was today years old when I finally realised that ConQuest is the same as Mythodea which I'll be attending with my group. Hope to see you there 😀
