Just rewatching this, having learned of Kelly Joe's passing 💔 and reflecting on how lucky I have been in seeing him play several times. This performance represents his talents 100%. RIP KJP

I am doing a similar traipsing through his videos understanding the loss to music. This is a really good one especially showing his humility and wit right at the end of the video. A great place to remember him.

Just think how Steve Earle and the others on stage listening to Kelly tearing it up, thinkin ' I'm good, but this guy is a master!'

I was working at a radio station in Rochester, NY, 1995-7 ish.. the Music Director, Jennifer V, and mid day host.. I did PM drive.. said, "Hey Mike, I think this is something you would like," and gave me the copy of "Lead Me On", on a CD.
As it goes I listened to it as I drove around the country for a few months. I was eating lunch at Cafe Lena on Hawthorne Boulevard, and there is Kelly Joe Phelps sitting on a too small stool sounding much like what you hear, here, in this.
    Transcendent.

I was friends with this man. We hung out in Vancouver, WA in the 80s and played jazz... drank coffee... watched Letterman on NBC... had him over for early morning breakfast and quiet tunes,,, taught lessons at the same music store... went to the local used record shops to buy jazz we hadn't heard yet (on the cheap)-we had little cash.
I recorded in my studio his very first tape of songs when he switched from fretless bass to slide guitar. The guy could play everything!
I had a therapy session today and spoke of my ups and downs with knowing Kelly... He was always so incredibly deep into music - we had many a midnight discussion about this or that record, or somebody's tone, or their approach to finding the magic.
Kelly had some beautiful pain in his head and his heart... I miss him...
..... I can still hear his voice. in my head...

I was fortunate enough to see him a couple of times after moving to Portland. We said a brief hello once. Most of the time, I was listening him engage others. His voice was so soft, courteous, and he was so generous in the way he left space in conversation.
When he sang and played, it transformed the space and time around him. I remember a show at the Aladdin Theater where Willy Porter opened and played the second set. Talk about a night I never wanted to end.

Was lucky enough to be there sat behind him, bloke with stupid pony tail. Me and my mate hitch hiked 2 days to get to Nashville for this with no guarantee of getting in. Thankfully KJP was a true gent and gave me and my mate his table. What a legend.

I was thrilled to trade for the bootleg DVD of this Bluebird Cafe show to get some live KJP. I was beginning to like Steve Earle, but hadn't heard Greg Trooper or Eric Taylor before. TH-cam's great, but no substitute for hearing this show start to finish. Now I learn of Kelly Joe's passing --- three of the four in this show gone. First Trooper, then Taylor, now Kelly. RIP guys.

I've watched many, many KJP videos but have not seen this one before. WOW...glad to have found it. Thanks Arlenoclast for posting. KJP more than held his own in this group. In my opinion, he's the best of the bunch!

Forgot what this was called and been looking for it for ages. He absolutely slays this version. Brilliant playing and the interplay with his vocal is so rich, melodic and full.
