    God left the building when Michael Crawford decided to make a comedy out of a great drama/romance/whatever and turned Count Krolock into...an idiot :-)

    6:45 OH MY GOD. Not even 10 minutes in and Sarah's friends get abducted by vampires in what might be the darkest opening number in Broadway history.

    The reason why this show did not do good on Broadway is because they turned it into a comedy, made it corney, and the scenery is horrible. This show is nothing compared to the German and Russian versions. They take it seriously and it is actually a really good show.

      I mean to be fair, it was already a comedy, just one with a more sophisticated sense of humor.
      I used to hate this version, but upon watching it more recently, I realized it isn't actually that bad on its own. It's not really to my own taste, but the audience seems to enjoy it and there are some genuinely good moments. The problem is that it really doesn't hold up to the source material; if they had just decided to make it a whole new musical instead of a horrible adaption of one of my favorite ones, I don't think I could really hold anything against it.
      As it stands though, I am really upset that this means I'll probably never be able to see a decent production in my native language.

      Chloe Kilmartin Have you seen the German version? The scenery and lyrics are amazing compared to this.

    • @BlazerDarkness
      @BlazerDarkness 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, for sure. I'm just saying that I only hate this because it's piggybacking off of Tanz der Vampire. It's a terrible adaption (I don't mind if adaptions are unfaithful as long as they're in some way better. Dance of the Vampires is decidedly not.), but if it had made *more* changes, enough that it was an entirely different intellectual property and we still had a chance of getting a decent English production, I wouldn't really have a problem with it.
      What I'm saying is, if you can turn off the part of your brain that remembers what Tanz is and how much better it is, this version isn't actually that bad, and is in fact a little enjoyable at times.
      (But yeah, the staging in Tanz (especially during Draußen ist Freiheit and Carpe Noctum) just completely blows me away every time I watch it. That choreography, man!)

      TheFamilykouf they tried to follow the source, the movie that is a comedy. But indeed they did it in the most horrible way. And as far as I guess English lyrics is not a translation but some nuisance.

      The original is a comedy, you have a man carrying another frozen man on his back, villagers singing about garlic and then the dude arriving with the frozen guy and everybody reacting like it’s conpleteny normally and that’s just the first five minutes. The broadway production is bad, it missed the mark but if the original production had been presented as it was in Germany in would’ve died a death on broadway because that style of comedy (like in many other German/Russian/French) musicals is awkward in English. What it needed was an adaptation where the creative team understood the original intent and tweaked and cajoled the original into something more palatable for broadway. However that takes skill. It takes skill to look at a song like the villagers garlic number and say ‘what is funny about this in German and why?’ Then create a set of lyrics that are not a direct translation but honour the original intent. That’s what this needed.

    I saw this show in previews or it might have been just as it opened. I took my girlfriend and we both hated it. I think it definitely suffered in comparison to the recently televised vampire musical "Once More With Feeling" i.e. the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I couldn't help comparing them anyway. 2 days later, I was back at a Broadway Theater taking my mother to a 1 act, 1 man, Frank Gorshin show about George Burns called "Say Goodnight Gracie." That show was excellent. After the show, I was waiting at a garage for my car to be brought around and ran into my firm's managing partner. We were talking and I told them why we were there and he told us he and his wife had gone to see Dance of the Vampire. I said "Oh I just saw that 2 nights ago." He asked me what I thought and I replied that I hadn't liked it, but at least it marginally improved in the second act. He said "Oh we wouldn't know we left at intermission." That is how awful that show was.

      But infinitely entertaining if you love watching a bizarre train wreck happen before your eyes. I kept thinking “how many people had to say ‘yes’ to this? Like… so many questions and I just had to laugh.

      you mentioning Buffy made me think - casting Anthony Head (a rock tenor who as far as I know has zero diva tendencies) as von Krolock instead of Crawford could have led to a much better and less troubled production!

    • @michaelmcchesney6645
      @michaelmcchesney6645 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rosebyanyname Possibly. They cast Michael Crawford because he was MICHAEL CRAWFORD, aka the Phantom. He was all over the marketing for Dance of the Vampire. I love Anthony Head, but he probably wouldn't have sold as many tickets as Crawford did. But Crawford was really awful in it. Joss Whedon may treat people like crap, but he is/was a phenomenal writer. His showed that his writing talent included being able to write music as well as screenplays. There are 2 songs from Once More With Feeling that I keep in my favorite playlist. The first was James Marsters' rendition of Rest in Peace and the second was Amber Benson's Under Your Spell. All of the songs were great, but those 2 were my favorites. I bet Joss could have adapted a much better show from that Roman Polanski vampire movie. His version would be funny, dramatic, and ultimately heart warming.
      But I think that if Joss wants to write a show like that, he might be best off if he watches the Woody Allen film, The Front. The movie is set in the 1950s during McCarthyism. In the movie Woody is a cashier in a restaurant. But blacklisted writers started using him as a front. They would write scripts that Woody would deliver to a studio and give 90% of the money to the writer. Woody kept 10% for himself. He ends up in front of a congressional committee looking for communists. He is told he will have no problem so long as he names some people. Woody refuses to name names and says something to the committee that my 12th grade social studies teacher didn't want me to hear. We watched the film in class and my teacher muted the TV so we couldn't hear Woody tell the committee to go F themselves. For over 30 years I wondered what Woody had said. But just a few years ago, finally, I watched the movie again. That was a really long way of saying Whedon might be best off if his brother or some other close confident took credit for future ideas and scripts.

    Das ist ja schrecklich...hab vor zwei Wochen Tanz der Vampire in Köln gesehen, mit herrlichem Bühnenbild, wunderbaren Kostümen und, ganz wichtig, einem dramatischen, düsteren und melancholischen Krolock. Der hier ist eine Witzfigur, die sich entschieden hat, aus ihrem Sarg eine Disco zu machen. Ich würde mich wahnsinnig ärgern, wenn ich dafür Geld ausgegeben hätte. Ganz nebenbei, Pilze sammeln?!

    I really don't care what anyone says, Michael Crawford is great in this.

    • @Mira_Dunia
      @Mira_Dunia 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Anjelica Snorcket The idea of changing the original version was launched before Michael was even hired. While he did come up with some ideas himself, he was just going along with a change to the original that was already in play.

    • @Mira_Dunia
      @Mira_Dunia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Anjelica Snorcket Actually, yes, a big change to the script was planned before Michael joined the company. And while he did add his own quips, so did other people in the cast. The roots of the changes weren't with Michael, even if he attributed to their growth.
      And to be honest, I listen to this just to hear him singing more than for the story. I have checked out the original for the story, and I do enjoy it.
