what makes this layer even cooler is that hakita said he made the layer a bright white is because it makes the blood stains of your enemies more apparent, further displaying the violent creature youve become. “THE WORLD IS YOUR CANVAS. SO TAKE UP YOUR BRUSH, AND PAINT.” fucking genius.

My jaw still hurts because how hard it dropped when I saw the boss in 7-4.
Also, Hakita made the layer fairly accurate to the original circle of violence in the Inferno. Said circle is guarded by the Minotaur in the source material, the river of blood in 7-2 is the Phlegethon, where those violent against others were punished, and 7-3 is the forest of suicides, where those who were violent against themselves were punished. I like to think the Earthmover is striding across the abominable sands, where those violent against god (blasphemers) are.
EDIT: It is! I didn't notice it while playing, but you can see the rain of fire during 7-4, that's how sinners there were punished.

    • @distantsea
      @distantsea ปีที่แล้ว +21

If you think about how god has been characterized in Ultrakill, placing the earthmover there makes sense. God was so frustrated with free will and humanity using it to destroy each other phsyically and morally that he abandoned his creation. These giant war machines were symbols of the final war going to such extremes that humanity had to live upon them instead of the earth. The ultimate expression of free will against god's creation. Placing them in the circle that stands for violence against god is so perfect I'm sure Hakita thought of it at least a little bit. The real question is what brought humanity to hell after the new peace? Because that new peace seems like something god would be happy to see if only he had stuck around

Gosh Hakita again cementing ULTRAKILL as a masterpiece of a game, this Layer was so good.
I really love level design on 7-1 in particular, the concept of using one skull key for multiple pedestals and utilizing backtracking for it is such a simple concept, but it gives such a fresh spin to the level progression.
That level and just the Violence Layer overall really embodies what FUNKe describes the game design: "This continuous ramp-up is so masterfully weaved that you never once feel like it's padding for time. They'll introduce a new concept, play with it a bit, and then subvert their own concept."

EDIT: I'm leaving this up, but I see that I need to clarify a bit. This has nothing to do with just giving advice or constructive criticism, I regret my wording a bit but I wrote it in a moment of frustration after deleting a significant handful of comments just flat out calling me stupid (or worse), if you see a comment about it that's still up... I'm not talking about those comments. Like I'm not saying don't give me advice or don't comment on my fight with the Earthmover at all, more just that I absolutely know I did it in a dumb way, and I already figured out the much better strat, and that I don't feel like calling me 'stupid' or whatever is really necessary or productive cause like... I already know. I don't really obsessively read comments as much as I used to for reasons basically exactly like this, but I was excited to discuss the new layer with people and was just disappointed it turned into all comments on my Earthmover fight, and just wanted to encourage a friendlier comment section, there was no ulterior motive and I was just honestly surprised to wake up to so many comments on this as I didn't realize people were going to take it really any other way. I apologize if it was interpreted any other way though, I'm gonna leave this up for context, and yeah I'm bowing out of this one as I very clearly need to.
    ORIGINAL COMMENT:
Hey, you! If you're on your way to the comments to write something about the way I fought the Earthmover, maybe... just like don't? I've already heard it all.
I've been called "stupid" and a bunch of other shit for just fighting in it a kinda dumb way. I obviously know that I fought it in a dumb way, I realized that literally 0.3 seconds after I finished it, but I do things my way here and if you're still watching this channel expecting always perfect gameplay without an ounce of buffoonery... Why the hell are you watching my channel anyways? I went back literally later in the same stream and fought it 'normally' in a VOD being posted tomorrow, so you can all *RELAX.* My opinion is I still don't like the boss at all really and I think it's poorly designed, even after doing it again 'normally' which was just boring and insanely easy.
Love the level and layer otherwise, had a great time today and I feel like I overall played fine after I shook some rust off other than this one incident... Can these comments please just be a celebration of how awesome this update is rather than a gross reminder that some members of this community can't mentally handle someone playing a little differently from them for 5 minutes?

That being said, overall I'm gonna have to go and call skill issue. The chapter boss is literally just making sure you remember how the game's mechanics work by chaining them together in more demanding but still readable ways. It's not doing anything particularly new once you get past the initial bluster of the Shadow of the Colossus/Armored Core spiel of climbing around in the boss, and like everyone pointed out there's a LACK of newly-added weaponry so your options aren't cluttering the judgement of what to do with the boss.

the timer orbs become a lot less stressful once you realize that hitting them gives you a little boost upwards, so you stay in the air longer. that 4 corner orb room in 7-2 can be done by just being in the middle and moving the mouse to whiplash them without loosing height.
also beyond getting rid of gutterman shields i pretty much just always stay on the feedbacker for projectile boosts and melee/mine parries.
man when i first got into 7-4 i just sat there for like a minute to admire the earthmover's sheer size and the see what it was shooting at and being shot by (it's another earthmover in the distance)

I just gave up on the lasers entirely and focused completely on just laying into it as hard as possible and killing it before the shields went up at all.
Stick a saw magnet to it, unload every cooldown, and then just shotgun punch and parry the orbs to heal. If you abandon dodging the lasers and kill it fast enough, parrying the orbs will outpace the laser damage enough for it to die before you do.

My favourite detail in this layer is how it's implied that V1 was designed to counter the Earthmovers.
"new designs were phased in and out at a feverish pace, each designed specifically to counter the last"
    - Guttertank Terminal Data
"War had become entirely dependent on them, large scale conflict was no longer feasible."
    - Earthmover Terminal Data
"The V model was built for war"
"However, during the prototyping phase, the New Peace was established and war became irrelevant."
    "V1's planned production was cancelled"
    - V2 Terminal Data
TL;DR Earthmovers were the last machines used in the Final War, and V1 was an unfinished prototype meant to be used in the war. Since each machine was designed to counter the last, V1 was meant to counter the Earthmovers.

The Earthmover fight becomes way cooler when you realize that V1’s original purpose was to be the foil to Earthmovers by disabling the shield generators from the inside so they could be damaged from the outside. However, New Peace came and the creation of V series robots became pointless, so only a prototype of the V1 robots was ever made. V2 was intended to be better at disabling Earthmovers but was also scrapped due to New Peace. The V1 prototype, after likely over a century, is finally able to do what it was always meant to do, even if it’s only doing it because it needs to in order to move further into hell.

The boss though is fun if you aren’t just shot gun spamming, using the idols as a spot to rest (the lasers get blocked by the little container they pop up in) and switching between the raised platform and the floor with mixes of jumping and slamming is amazing, along with trying to keep up with the lasers

The last boss was amazing, he was just being kind of.. bad-
Not that it was a bad thing though, I just personally found it to be pretty easy, so that is influencing my opinion on if he was bad or not-

yeah, he was playing awfully during this and acknowledged in a multiple paragraph long comment where he whined about the people who wrote negative comments (shocker, considering him being mind boggled by a simple boss was like 15-20% of the video, and also the most popular part)

just because you asked chat what they did for the boss, this is what i did:
i kinda treated it like fp, so i put a magnet into it and shot saws.
shotgun swapping really helps with dps
parrying orbs is great for heals
instead of always jumping over lasers, i just dash and slide jumped away from them and only jumped away when i had to
electric railcannon slows the laser down a bit too i think
great video, i just beat the layer mysefl a few hours ago and have fun p-ranking!
(also good fucking luck with 7-3 challenge)

Watching you struggle with the blue key gives me a headache.
You repeatedly open up shortcuts that loop back around to where the skull was last placed, allowing you to grab it and return through the shortcut to place it on the next pedestal.
    It's not confusing.
