Constructed from 1887-1889 as the entrance to the 1889 World's Fair, it was initially criticised by some of France's leading artists and intellectuals for its design, but it has become a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognisable structures in the world
The tower is 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall, with three viewing level .It is made of iron and weighs around 10000 tonnes
It is possible to climb to the top, but there are 1,665 steps. Most people take the lift.
Today the tower welcomes almost 7 million people a year, making it the most visited paid-for monument in the world.
