  • Hey everyone! In this lesson I'm going to show you all how to play "Losing My Religion" by R.E.M. This song is fairly simple chord-wise, but the strumming is actually somewhat challenging. If you listen to the actual recording, there isn't much of a recurring strumming pattern. Instead there are certain beats that are always accented, and the rhythm guitarist is playing around those beats. I've simplified all that and managed to come up with a pattern that fits the whole song so you can focus on the switches :)
► Need help with the basic chords and strumming? My beginner guitar course will help you build a solid foundation one step at a time:
    goodguitarist.com/beginner-gu...
► And don't forget to grab your copy of my free eBook:
    goodguitarist.com/learn-rhyth...
The lesson begins with 2 chord shapes: Am and Em. These are VERY simple to switch between, and if you're an ABSOLUTE beginner you should be able to follow along with the first part of this video, as we're only going to be using these 2 simple chord shapes.
Once I show you a couple tips for switching between them, we practice playing them in order, using downstrokes only, and then take a look at the strumming pattern.
This is a long one! And it also has "mutes" in it (where you stop the strings with your hands). I take us through the whole thing, step-by-step, and show you EXACTLY what your hands should be doing and how to count out the rhythm.
Once we've tackled that, we play the Verse, Chorus and Bridge with the chords and strumming patterns. I take us through all of this methodically and give you a chance to play along with each section.
After that, it's time to learn the nifty chord-melody intro. I've taken the mandolin part and merged it with the chords/strumming from the chorus. This provides a pleasing combination and tells the listener exactly what song you're about to play :)
I hope you enjoy the lesson and I'll see you next time!
    -James

This is a great tutorial, I particularly like the way you explain each step, also the bar across the top of the screen helps big time as I sometimes find myself getting lost in the cord changes. I will definitely be watching more of your tutorials,
    Thanks.

i'm trying to work my way back in to playing again, and your instruction on this old favorite song of mine was great. Very simple movements, and the chords came back to me, (after 50 some years). Thank you so much.

Two tips for beginners (like myself) 1: slow down the video as need it. 2nd: change chords on the last strum Ex; to changed chords from Am to Em the strumming patterns goes D DXDUXU UXU UD"U"

Awesome video but if you could have a link in the description to the chords and lyrics, like the scrolling bar at the top of the video but on one page covering the whole song, that would be great

Hi. Very good, informative and practical tutorial. Thank you very much.
I am a beginner player. Maybe because of that but I feel a difference in the strumming pattern between the verse and the intro. After the melody strumming pattern starting with F seems to be different from the pattern of the verse. I am confused. Maybe cause I can not feel the rhytym. A I wrong?

Awesome tutorial! This is the first song (and first tutorial!) that really got me into playing acoustic guitar. Thanks a lot for making it.
Here's a change I came up with to add some variation to the strumming pattern:
    Instead of the regular: D_DMDUMU_UMU_UDU
Use this every once in a while: D_DMDUMU_UDUD_DU
I find it sounds nice on the Em chords.

I saw tambourines hung in the wall. Do you play them too? I do them too. I'm from Italy and there are lots of amazing traditional techniques here. I play rhythm like "pizzica pizzica", "tarantella calabrese" and so on. However I'm going to study your tutorial about "loosing my religion" as soon as possible.

Call the chords what they are. If you're going to play a G, play a G. If your going to play a G+4 call it that.
