Walking into YELLOWSTONE After the Floods - No Cars Allowed!

  • Yellowstone’s Northeast Entrance has been closed since June 13th, 2022 due to record flooding.
On July 2nd, 2022 the park service opened the north entrances to foot traffic only, creating a unique and epic opportunity for those willing to put in a little effort. July is typically the busiest month for Yellowstone, but I was there all by myself. It was awesome!
UPDATE: (as of July 12th, bicycles are also allowed to enter the north and northeast entrance along with foot traffic)
I walked/hiked into Yellowstone through the Northeast entrance on July 6th, 2022. According to the ranger at the entrance station there had only been 20 visitors that entire day and most didn’t go more than a mile before turning around. After the first mile I didn’t see a single person and when I left the rangers told me I was the last person in the park. Having visited Yellowstone yearly for the past 40 years I can say this was one of the most interesting, unique and awesome Yellowstone experiences I have ever had.
I was able film several areas of the road that had been damaged by the flooding. After walking 4.3 miles into the park I discovered I had no water and had to turn around at Barronette Peak. On the way out I spotted a black bear and filmed him cross the road.
The Northeast entrance of Yellowstone has always been the least busy entrance to the park. Still there are two small gateway communities (Silvergate and Cooke City) that rely on tourism to survive. With two of the three roads leading to these towns closed due to the floods these communities are hurting. At the same time the lack of tourists has created a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these remarkable areas with almost no tourists. For those willing to travel a little out of their way to reach these places the reward will be unforgettable.
    Filmed in 4k on July 6th, 2022.

The one pass in/out of Yellowstone I have not been on so fun to see. What a great, probably once in a lifetime, opportunity to see the park without all the traffic!

I really enjoyed this. I even watched all of it- something I rarely do! It was partly the beauty of the park with rain clouds. But also, I started to realize that you look at life the right way. Enjoy everything, even the poop, and make fun of yourself for forgetting things. Push yourself to walk more. Be good at what you love, and I assume you love photography. Keep on being near-perfect!

Oh, Ryan, I was really feeling for ya when you realized you didn’t have water 😔 But you still managed to make a hilariously and entertaining video - dehydration and all! Thanks for your sacrifice 🫡 I can’t imagine how surreal it was to be the only person in the park! And it looked so beautiful with the rain cloud over the mountains! I loved the wildflowers, too, I always love seeing them when I hike or travel. I’m sure you hear this a lot but you don’t look 42! When you first said you’d been visiting the park for over 40 years I thought “Being there as a twinkle in your father’s eye doesn’t count!” 🤭

Thanks for the suggestions. I filmed Crazy Creek while I was up there, but it honestly looked the same as usual...crazy. Lake Creek I should have filmed because there was lots of downed trees and the river banks had changed. The river was even flowing straight through the forest in some places.

@@RyanThayne I appreciate it. It's had me wondering. I initially thought right after the flood that's they'd get some sort of temporary series and roads and bridges in so residents could get to Gardiner, but that obviously isn't happening. I suppose they could try to keep the Beartooth Pass open up to the Chief Joseph, so you could get to Cody, but once winter really sets in I'm not sure how feasible that is. Even if that worked you're still cutting kids off from their school.

I'd have chanced the river water. Also a good idea to bring a water filter when going into the wilderness. While hiking on pavement is never much fun, the fact that this was Yellowstone and empty makes it very special. The reward were the views and the bear sighting. No worries even if this were a griz. They do not attack for no good reason, they just want to be left alone to do their thing. People don't realize how rare bear attacks are.
