Hi.. I have an i-phone 10 (so old!!) and it fits. A larger phone will be a but bulky. We can change the pocket to have a square bottom instead of a curve. There is enough yardage to increase the size of the pocket.
This is SUCH a helpful tutorial! Thank you SO much. I bought this pattern but have been afraid to make it and seeing you do it has given me some courage -- as well as your sweet reply to the user below who is a beginner. I am a bit of a beginner as well, and bought it because it said it was a beginner pattern. I am not so sure now, but it should keep me occupied for a bit of winter, anyhow! Thanks again!!!
You are so welcome! I appreciate this so much! Just know we were all beginners and it's all about reading the pattern entirely, then patiently working step by step. There is never a rush (unless you're like me and want to wear the garment tomorrow).
I'm planning to make the dress so I searched for a tutorial and you popped up. Excellent, concise, easy to follow tutorial. Thank you. I'm now a subscriber ❤ 🇬🇧
Oh dear I’ve watched it again and I get it this time ,when I held my dress up it looked like a jigsaw puzzle I didn’t realise when you do the front it’s at the shoulders 🤷I feel so daft ,sorry about the moan I’ll get back to it tomorrow ,I must have been hungry C U SOON 🥰
You are great Eileen! I have to read, read, and re-read patterns many times. I'm a very visual person. Share you garment!! We all would love to see it!! Tag @SewBatik if you post it on FB or Instagram!!!
How wonderful! I would love to see a picture. If you are a facebook follower or Instagram follower post your garment with @sewbatik and we will see it on our feed. Thank you for sharing!!
The dress looks great on you! I have the pattern, but I’m a beginner and I’m worried about being able to figure everything out. It makes me want to try it now!
This was a perfect tutorial to lead me thru my first attempt at a Fira top. Thank you so much for your information on joining the yoke to the dress - as a beginner, I was having a lot of trouble figuring it out.
Humm - unless I misunderstand the burrito method, I don't believe it will work. If you could describe how it might work - I'd love to try. We may need to change a few construction steps in order to find a place to pull the dress out of the burrito - right? The arm opening is finished before the yoke is attached to the front/back pieces. I have to give this some thought.
Great Video! I watched it before constructing the dress. Question/Statement: I am not a fan of the sleeves. Major gaposis, I took apart the underarm seam and reduced it, but I am still not happy. Since you have made a couple of the dresses do you have any suggestions or ideas for a different sleeve. Appreciate any input.
I had to reduce the opening as well as it was low. As for a different sleeve - let me give this some thought. One quick thought is to extend the sleeve length. With the additional length, form a cuff (or not), but it will elimate the arm opening with the additional length. The Fringe Dress pattern has the same sleeve style. It's a kimono length with or without a cuff. (no attached sleeve).
Great video, thank you. Are there any fabric designs (e.g. stripes etc) you’d recommend to stay away from? And start to finish, what’s the approx time it takes to make the dress-experienced vs beginner (tough question I know).
Hi Barb. Great questions. Fabric choice is a personal decision. Fabric can flatter a figure or enhance features we are trying to hide. I make mistakes when selecting fabric for my frame/color when I know better - it's all about the fabric and how comfortable we are in it. I'm certain there are classes taught on the "right fabric/garment" for our frames. The time needed to make this dress is dependent on your focus and amount of interuption. If I am truly focused this dress can be completed in a day. I usually prewash the fabric one evening, cut out the pieces the next, and sew up the dress on the third night into the next morning.
@@sewbatikfabric thanks very much. I wasn’t all that clear in my question about fabric-it was more about needing to match a design in the fabric eg line up stripes but when I think of the gathering and the yoke etc I think it’s likely best to avoid that sort of design in a fabric. Thanks again
@@barbshea7389 I see. Yes - there is a shoulder yoke that could be interesting, unless the strips were set in a different direction on the yoke, or unless the strips are going around, not un/down.
The Fira pattern is a little advanced for me. Your tutorial is very helpful but would have helped me more if you had done things with an overhead view.
Thank you for sharing this information. I am attempting to move my work area. Hopefully I can work in a better overhead camera. I know what you are asking for. Thank you again.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Liz. I am planning on sewing the Fira top in our linen and will review this video to understand what I missed. Let me know which step was missed so I can improve the follow-up video tutorial. I appreciate your comments very much!!
@@sewbatikfabric I found it confusing when sewing the yoke to the the back. Somewhere I missed finishing the sleeve hems. Therefore I had a problem fitting the two pieces and had to go back. For me I could have used more direction on the importance of this step. That’s just me and maybe I skipped that step. Next time it will be easier. I love the sew alongs…keep them coming.
I revisited the video and at about 33:00 min I'm talking through the steps for attaching the yoke and I stop to say that I had already pressed and topstitched the arm opening prior to attaching the yoke to the garment. I didn't show this step, I only mentioned that the hem should already be done. I can now see how this was confusing. I look forward to revising the Fira Top. I don't have a basic black linen top. I've selected the Hand Dyed Tuxedo for the Fira Top. I'm looking forward to this!! Thanks Liz!!
What a terrible waste of our time! You spent ages and we could not see what you were. doing! You filmed so far away. Oh my goodness! I am so frustrated. I do want to make the dress but you were no help at all. Oh my goodness. I do not intend to view your videos again.
Hi Pamela. Well, I guess it's about time I received a bad review. Each review helps me improve - thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. I am sewing a Fira Top this week and will be filming each step. The only difference between the dress and top is the side seam pockets. This step will not be in the video. May I ask your garment sewing experience level? Thanks Pamela!! Have a wonderful day!!
Excellent video, thank you. I have forward shoulder and upper round back so I hope this pattern might give me a decent fit.
I hope so too! Let me know how it turns out for you!
Can you fit a large phone in your pocket. And I’m curious about the green dress. Love the color and style

Thank you Sandie - Enjoy sewing this beautiful garment. I am about to make a top instead of a dress. I really love the style at the shoulders!

I just finished my Fira dress in your linen batik. It fits beautifully. Great pattern and your TH-cam tutorial was very helpful.

You can do it! It truly is a basic dress. The yoke is the only "fussy" portion of the dress.

YEAH! It is a great pattern and I found the fit to be so nice as well! I still have 2 tops to make with left over linen. When to find the time?
It looks beautiful.
Thank you so much!
Hi, how beautiful fits that dress! an excellent pattern!
Thank you so much! I can’t wait to make the top in our batik rayon.
I have a hard time following the placing of the yoke....
Hi Beatriz... I have been asked this before as well. I will schedule time to video an episode on attaching this yoke.
I was wondering if you would or even could use the burrito method for the yoke. What do you think
