  • Leaving an alongside berth, especially on a smaller boat, can just be a case of pushing the boat far enough out to allow you to drive away, but it's not always that easy. Our resident boating instructor Jon Mendez explains all...

2 things - 1). If big Jon Mendez did a boat tour for MBY, no one would dare question his camera techniques, even if they were mental. 2). Listening to big Jon Mendez talk boats is as relaxing as a pair of warm slippers and a tot of whiskey! Cracking stuff!

Informative, grew up in Central Florida with an 18 ft boat and did all of those techniques many times.

Some good tips here. The one I always find challenging is - berthed on a pontoon, one boat immediately to stern and another immediately ahead of u, with the tide running at 3mph onto your bow, so that the minute u untie or take the power off, your boat is heading sternwards fairly rapidly. I’ve tended to ferry glide, but often causes a twitch lol.

So well explained as always, thank you Jon.
And what a wonder it’d be to have a full one to one with him learning boat handling, luckily this is pretty close 👍

Checking out your videos. They are really good. Just got my first boat 49 years old but seems solid. Older ones seem far stronger.

Shame you did not show one side of the pontoon with the wind and then the other side against the wind to emphasise the difference between the two
Apart from that keep the good work and explanations coming in a lay man term.

Is it OK to run the motor with the canvas cover on? Does the engine get enough air?
