Yeah it's pretty clear why these characters don't click with the ketchup-and-Wonderbread tastes of a lot of cats, but at least to me it carries a lot of the same mysterious, arcane vibes of ninjas and samurai. Any old culture's warriors or sportsmen turned up with fighting game stylishness is gonna be badass, even the chubby ones. Honda's hot af, end of story.
I think there might be a resurgence of Sumo being taken a little more seriously in fiction ever since the concept of "Ancient Sumo" has been explored. I didn't even know about historical sumo names like Nomi no Sukune or Raiden Tameemon if it wasn't for Baki and Record of Ragnarok.
I fell into a rabbit hole of sumo not too long ago, and it's crazy to think how people just say they're just fat dudes pushing each other around. Those dudes sacrifice their whole life for sumo and most of them won't ever come close to the top position.
