    Thanks for the video. Don't need to do this at present but I gather it will need to be done eventually. From your description the kit seems worth the money. I like your easy going narrative. Cheers.

      Cheers! That’s appreciated, I hope it helps if you swap yours. I’ve got to swap the sight glass out on my rear master cylinder so I should film that.

    That's been really helpful thanks. Just a note for 990 Superduke owners following this guide. I bled and bled and bled (I am a self confessed total Muppet of a mechanic) and bled and still had hardly any bite. ...... Then I noticed the second bleed nipple on the switchgear by the clutch master cylinder :-) bled this and job done!

    Very helpful, thanks. For anyone about to do this the torque is very important if you retain the OEM plastic spacer mount, because it can easily deform, and even get hairline fractures that weep fluid, if you over tighten. Torque to 10 Nm only, and if you can also install the billet Oberon spacer because it doesn’t deform or crack.

      Good to know, I don't think I put much in to mine but I might retighten them with a torque wrench.

      No problem, hope it helps you out. If it doesn't help keep an eye on your master cylinder, it could be leaking past the seal which reduces the pressure releasing the clutch pack

    Thanks for the video! The clutch slave cylinder on my 1290 SuperDuke completely stopped working. Clutch lever feels like a brake lever now, just squish, no movement. I ordered the Oberon slave cylinder and their spacer. I wasn't sure about doing the install, but after watching this, it didn't look too bad.

    • @buaan
      @buaan  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool, I hope this helps. It is pretty straight forward I'm sure you'll nail it. From my research the 1290's have a way better clutch master cylinder fitted so you should have less issues at that end, being a SuperDuke I bet it has a super fancy one though.

      Thanks for the vid busan - I am also planing on getting one of these oberon slave cylinders for a 2017 - 1290 super adventure.
      I am not sure yet if there is any change in the stock slave cylinder to this 990 one , as both the oberon and this stock slave cylinder on your bike both look the same as whats on the 2017 1290 SAR ?
      .., also a bleeding kit (with the big syringe and pvc hose on the bleeding valve makes bleeding a lot simpler, quicker, and less messy .

    • @buaan
      @buaan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The part code for yours is slightly different (60032061344) but it still says LC8 Slave Cylinder so may be the same part slightly updated. Oberon's site shows the same slave cylinder for 950/990/1190/1290's so you should be fine. I'd keep your OEM KTM one as a spare, useful to carry on you if you do any major touring.
      Bleeding using the kit is a good idea if you have one, although I recommend the process of loosening the slave, topping it off and and pumping it to remove air. After that bleeding from the bottom up to the master cylinder would probably work well!
      Good luck with the install if you go ahead with the Oberon.

      buaan Hi,
      I just did the same job on my 950.
      I was wondering why you didn't use the o-ring on the old Slave cylinder and pass it to the Oberon's.
      I think the new Oberon slave cylinder doesn't need an o-ring, does it? When fitting it on the mounting plate (made of plastic from magura).
      I installed the Oberon mounting plate together with the new slave cylinder but I don't know if the o-ring from the old Slave cylinder has to be fitted between the two aluminium parts.
      Thanks for your video

    Hi Buaan
    I have the exact same bike as you have. How did you find out the cylinder needed to change? I have a broken Clutch now. I was on my way home from work when I suddenly felt the preassure in the clutch handle decreased.... and in a moment I had no preassure left in the clutch handle. A friend of mine thought it could be the slave cylinder, the one you just changed.
    Last question is if your satisfied with the Oberon slave cylinder??
    Would be happy for an answer from you.
    Please forgive me for any misspelling or bad english. Im swedish.....;)

    • @buaan
      @buaan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, I diagnosed mine because it was getting a slight crunch when changing gears, almost as if I wasn't fully disengaging the clutch.
      Your clutch slave could have failed, however, yours sounds like it may also be the clutch master cylinder which has failed at the handlebar end. Take a look under the little rubber cover to see if any oil is leaking out there. I personally would first try cleaning the clutch slave and master cylinder areas, then re-bleed the system with 5w fork oil to see if you can see where the fluid is escaping. I hope you manage to fix it. If you need to buy a new master cylinder this is a good option - www.venhill.co.uk/Controls,_Levers_&_Handlebars/MOTORCYCLE_CONTROLS/HYDRAULICCONTROLS/MAGURA_167_MASTER_CYLINDER/2700185_167_CLUTCH_MASTER_CYLINDER_-_10.5mm.html
      I am happy with the oberon slave, it is expensive but I am hoping it won't fail like the stock KTM ones do :) It also looks nicer! Your English is good man, better than most English peoples! ;)

    There are four bolts in the package because two are longer, two are shorter. There isn't much difference, maybe 10mm. For the LC8 I used the longer bolts.

    • @buaan
      @buaan  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, on mine I used the stock bolts to match the size and thread length.

    • @josephfink437
      @josephfink437 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you mean you used the original bolts off of the stock Clutch slave? The heads on my original bolts wouldn't fit through the Oberon body. Perhaps you meant that you used the stock bolts to match up the correct Oberon bolts. I gauged the best depth by looking at the marking left on the threads with the Oberon bolts when I installed and removed.

    • @buaan
      @buaan  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Fink ahh, I meant I used the original stock bolts to gauge the length and thread depth of the two Allen head type ones that came with the Oberon. In the footage you can see me placing the stock one against the Oberon bolts to see which one would fit correctly :)

      Very good! Thank you very much, by the way for putting up this video!!! It was very helpful during my replacement. My replacement was predicated on the circlip breaking on the stock slave AND a leak on the clutch push rod seal. I saw where there is a repair kit for the stock slave but decided to bite the bullet and get a hopefully more durable slave. Thanks again.

    • @buaan
      @buaan  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Fink you're welcome, glad it helped! The internet is great for this type of stuff.

  • @buaan
    @buaan  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Quick update - I re-bled my system again as the crunch came back, I think my master cylinder seal is going also. I'll do a video if I replace those seals/piston/spring etc.
    I refilled it all with 5w fork oil, you get a litre for the same price as the Motorex and the lighter weight oil makes the clutch lighter.

    • @Snowhite808
      @Snowhite808 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Somewhere in the vid was mentioned.
      Can and should use only mineral based oil, for the master cyl is also made to work with that only.

    • @buaan
      @buaan  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never used brake or clutch fluid in there buddy, only motorex mineral oil, and the fork oil is 5weight mineral oil. I may say 'It shouldn't corrode the bike like brake fluid', but your right, only mineral oil allowed.

    • @Snowhite808
      @Snowhite808 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm. good one.
      I´ve never used mineral fork oil. :)
      Just assuming too much, without facts.
      then is good. + one can choose the thickness and mess around with different versions of it.

    How do you like the feel of this compared to the stocker?

    • @buaan
      @buaan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +cheecogregthegreat If I'm honest, not much difference. Some reviews said "feels really light now"... It's still a heavy hydraulic clutch same as any other KTM I've ridden, EXC's etc. Maybe it has improved it say 20%? but I can't tell really and its definitely not feather light. Best reason to get one is to reduce the chance of a total failure.

      +buaan i have my 990 adv 2009 since new. I also have the Oberon slave (after two factory ones gone south). Since I installed the Oberon I've had two master cylinder fails (the piston kinda wears off the bore and sealing so oil sips out). Mechanics think that the Oberon SC increases backpressure at the top hence the master cylinder fails.
      Since then I've switched to a radial type clutch (from a superduke). It eliminates the problem completely (my set has about 60k kms - the bike 95k kms). Half of the 95k kms have been done in urban settings with heavy traffic hence a lot of clutch usage. The only drawback is that the radial clutch has a much heavier feel in comparison to the factory Magura one. IMO the conversion worths it even though you'll be feeling like you're doing an exercise everytime you pull the clutch.

    • @buaan
      @buaan  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      C_R_O_M__________ Interesting. Do you mean the Super Duke master cylinder/clutch lever assembly? I had planned on swapping to the upgraded Magura master cylinder that they fit to the newer 1050/1190's, although if a Super Duke one is cheaper it might be an option. I think a new Magura master is around £135.
