In earlier days, Semaphore signals were used by indian railways.
Changing the angle of the arm gives different indications to the train driver.
They are being replaced with more advanced light signals.
We will build a model of this signal with the help of solenoid.
Solenoid is the generic term for a coil of wire used as an electromagnet.
I will take these two paper straws.
One straw is cut into three pieces.
These two pieces are connected together with cellotape to the main straw.
36 gauge coated copper wire is taken. 700 turns are made around this 6 cm long straw piece.
Both ends are tied together and coating removed with sandpaper.
Empty pen refill is cut and it is fixed to the main straw. We will prepare a signal arm from this small straw with the help of pin. When placed in the refill, it can rotate freely.
Let’s take this eraser. We will make two holes. One for the singal pole and one for the winding.
We will use this long needle. It is tied with thread and another end of thread attached to the signal arm.
This pin will arrest the movement of the arm downwards when the screw is inserted at the other end as counterweight.
Signal in this position indicates STOP for the train.
We will paint this paper strip and attach to the signal arm.
Now let us connect this battery holder to the solenoid. It has 4 AA batteries and can provide a potential difference of 6 volts.
When the circuit is complete, solenoid pulls the needle down as a magnetic field is generated.
The device creates a magnetic field from electric current and uses the magnetic field to create linear motion.
This will be active till current is flowing through the solenoid. Opening the circuit, releases the needle and signal returns back to horizontal STOP position.

The semaphore flag-signaling system is an alphabet-based system that requires waving a pair of hand-held flags in particular patterns. Here's how you send a rescue signal using the flags.
Step 1: Get the receiver's attention
Get the attention of the person you wish to send the signal to by waving both of your flags repeatedly overhead in a scissor-like motion.
Step 2: Wait for acknowledgment
Wait for the receiving party to send the semaphore letter K with their flags. This is the signal to proceed.
Tip
There are unique flag positions for each letter of the alphabet.
Step 3: Transmit N-C
Transmit the letters N-C using your semaphore flags. Move directly from the N position to the C position without stopping.
Tip
In the International Code of Signals the letters N-C stand for "I am in distress and require immediate assistance."
Step 4: Bring your flags down
Bring your flags down in front of you with the flag staffs crossing each other after you have finished.
Step 5: Wait for acknowledgment
Wait for the receiver to send the letter C, acknowledging your distress call. If your message was not received, they will send the letters I-M-I. If this happens, resend your message.

Semaphore has always intrigued me. Many years ago, I qualified for my Novice Ham Radio license, back when 5 wpm Morse code was still required. I still remember about half of my Morse and probably about the same with my radio theory. I have been casually trying to relearn what I have forgotten. I would kind of like to add semaphore to my repertoire and have checked out a number of TH-cam videos. This one actually explains the positions fairly well, whereas all the others I've seen simply demonstrate the signals--and typically at a rather fast rate. While I could have stopped and started the other videos in order to make sense of what I was seeing, this officer and his cadet truly demonstrated and taught semaphore. The one suggestion that I might make is to point out that the order of the positions within the circles sometimes changes, I assume because of letter frequency. While the officer's accent was quite pronounced, I was able to understand him very well. I did have trouble with one or two words, but I was able to quickly figure them out by context. My hearing is very bad, especially the ability to discriminate between two similar sounding words, like elevator and alligator. Even so, I could understand him fairly easily because he enunciated his words so distinctly. It seemed like he was making an effort to be understandable. Thank you for that. Too many people mumble instead of speaking clearly. This was a very well-done video--bravo!
