    I’m not trying to get rich. I just want to make enough money to by land and a farm to sustain it part time. I just bought a house on a smalle piece of land and it had surrounding acreage with cows. I would love to buy it one day to own a farm. Life long dream on mine but I have no clue where to start.

    All the grass fed beef producers are sold out with waiting lists. How do I do this with the coming food crisis? Do I try to raise the beef myself?

    Okay listen 15 to $20 a pound for grass-fed beef is comparable with whole food market. Only as far ass Prime Cuts are concerned. T-bone, porterhouse, ribeye steaks, prime rib eye, and tenderloin. Strips would be lower then the range above. Burger depending on how lean is way lower. It goes for $7.00 dollars a pound at whole food market and that's for 93/7... If someone lives close to local beef farm they can get a whole grass fed Angus for around 5-6$ a pound. Lol the only people that will pay 15-20$ a pound are city folks that got the $$$$$$. Other then that ain't no country folks putting that kind of money out.

    Question I'm in California and raise cattle. I am looking for a better way to get my beef to market. Biggest opstical I have is getting around the "not for resale" stamp on beef. How do the CSA handle this part... Thank you so much for all your input. I have great cows but the old way of taking them to a sale barn is not what I am wanting to do going forward. Thank you for your ideas

    • @bneale0714
      @bneale0714 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not for resale is stamped on the product that is processed as "custom" and go back to the owner of the animal or the animal that was sold live to another individual. A federally inspected product otherwise known as USDA inspected can be resold by the piece and will not be marked that way. The reason for this is there is recall information in case of foodborne illness by inspection number and SOP plans in the case of USDA products that are generally not kept with solely custom/ back to farm products. CSA's handle it by each person owning a "share" of the animal and therefore it technically goes back to the owner of the animal, even though there are multiple owners.

      @@bneale0714 thanks so much Ben for your input. I haven't had a USDA Facility open to the public near me. Untill recent there is one that is about 2.5-3 hours away. The USDA facility was the hold up. There are a couple very large players here in California that handle the majority of beef in our region and no other facilities have been able to compete. Now that I found a facility to process the primals then I can send to usda finisher/packer that will trim and be ready for CSA. Very complicated. But slowly making progress. Do you dry age your meat at your usda facility ?

    • @bneale0714
      @bneale0714 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@patricktucker9950 Yes, if it has a good fat cover. It just so happened a few years ago the local custom processor closed as I was getting in the business. I took the step in 2016 to by the plant and worked the slow road to get it federally inspected in spring of 2018. We still do about 85% custom and the rest have been others wanting USDA. I have a little competitive advantage in owning that aspect of the supply chain but also the disadvantage and time constraints that come with running it versus selling product :)

      @@bneale0714 I gotcha I looked into puting a co-op together with several ranchers in my area but the build out was near million for the facility and then all the restraints of being there keeping it going seems counter productive for my end all goal. I sure appreciate your time and hope the best for you.

      If you are close to a major city (within a few hours) the best thing to do is let the city people have an experience. What I mean is to let them come and actually see the cow they are buying and be able to come down like once every few months and show them how they are fed and educate them in the process. Wealthy people love pay for simple things like this just to say "I raised it" even though they had nothing to do with it other than coming down to check on their cow every not and then and boasting the little knowledge you gave them so they can tell their friends "how it's done". Growing up on a ranch then later living in a few major cities for a few years, this is exactly what happens.

    Why would anyone pay you $20/lb? They can get Butcherbox delivered right to their door. It’s equal quality to what we produce on our farm.
    We’re organic certified, USDA inspected, and still at $4/lb hanging. By the piece, our t bones, ribeyes and strips are $14.99.
    BE CAREFUL FOLKS, people are buying meat at Aldi’s (which is actually good quality) and selling it on Craigslist. Only buy from farms you have been to and met the farmer.
