I spent probably my whole life trying to get rid of stereotypes about Asian Versus Caucasian appearances. I grew up in a family where both my parents had thick double eyelids. Only my two sisters and my grandma were born with monolids. It bothered me people would come up to us and ask where we were from, if we were mixed or if we had surgery. My parents made it clear that where they are from which is more south east China, a lot of people have double eyelids. I studied humanities in college and i learned anthropologically speaking the fold does not make a person Caucasian. The fold is believed to be a evolutionary adaptation. Monolids are more common in Northern East Asia as the fatty eyelids helps to insulate against harsh winters. Double eyelids are common south because it is more humid and hot. Believe it or not Caucasians can also have monolids. It is mostly seen in more northern regions of Europe.
As for myself I have a mix of my grandma's monolid and my parents double eyelids so I have what is called tapered eyelids. I use double eyelid tape on rare occasions, mostly when filming or formal events. I am also a insomniac, when I have restless sleep, my eyelids feel heavy and stretches out into a monolid. There is actually a medical condition called Ptosis which sometimes require eyelid surgery. So I think its wrong to assume everyone who wants double eyelids, do it to look "Caucasian"

@@Ladeliciadelinda Your last statement is my very same sentiment. I've had this surgery but without the intention of looking like a Caucasian. You will still look Asian even after having it. She is implying superiority to be honest as if Asians don't want to embrace themselves and wants to be Caucasian.

Who cares? Seriously. The girl in this video was obviously unhappy with her eyes, and so she did something about it and now she's happy with them. So as of result, Tyra brings her on the show and bashes her for it and now there are idiots in the comments doing the same. "I think she looked better before" good for you, obviously SHE didn't think so. And at the end of the day the only thing that really matters is what you think about yourself. Caucasians also aren't the only race with double eyelids, or straight hair. Tyra also found a way to make it all about her. As usual. "I do this because I want to look more white" sweetheart that is your own damn problem that you need to deal with. Quit bringing others down to feel better about yourself. And don't judge Korean culture or any Asian culture on this. They aren't the only ones with strange ways to look beautiful or the only ones to use plastic surgery. I'm glad this show isn't on anymore.

@@OVI-Wan-Kenobi-8 No it's not bullshit lies and denial, it's sheer ignorance from Tyra because she is assuming that Korean people want bigger eyes because they want to look more white (which is bullshit).
Tyra is applying her own experiences as an African American woman to this woman's choices, when she clearly doesn't have a clue about Korean culture lol. As always she just has to put the focus onto herself: "Look at my hair, this is why I do this. I'm so understanding and smart, and everyone is going to admire me for assuming you think and feel just like me".
White people may naturally have bigger eyes, but that doesn't mean that Asian people want bigger eyes because they want to look caucasian 😂 Large eyes have been seen as a mark of beauty in Korea for thousands of years (probably before they knew that white people even existed lol).

OMG, Tyra doesn't understand that black girl struggles are so much more different than Asian girls' struggles... Asian girls don't get "weaves" and she probably doesn't know that South Korea is known for their skilled plastic surgery specialists so it's the norm to get plastic surgery as a Korean, so it's not a big deal. and then there Tyra is preaching like she knows everything. Just because the Korean girl is not telling Tyra what she wants to hear doesn't make her dishonest, I think Tyra is facing her own struggles there...

Wow. I used to be a fan of tyra banks.
a lot of asians have natural double eyelids. therefore, it's not one step closer.
Also, being an asian myself, the eyelids could be drooopy. As older, they do tend to get worse. Some but not all asians have a lot of fat on their eyelids and it does weigh them down.
Why the fuck is she saying "not being honest?" I think the girl is being honest?
What is the purpose of this? Is tyra trying to say that asians are trying to look caucasian?

I don't know if you know but the hair color does not indicate race. There are Asians who naturally have blonde hair. Celebrities choose to have different colors of hair including purple, red, white, blonde and etc. They just choose those colors that match their concept of the song. Also, eyelid surgery does not make Asians look like Caucasians. I don't know where you get those references, but Asians have different bone structures, medial canthal ligaments, muscle, and fats around the eye. It is impossible to make Asian eyes into Caucasian with surgery. So it does not make sense to reason Asians get eyelid surgery to look like Caucasians. Asians simply get eyelid surgery to look 'prettier' because as you know when human face features look like a baby such as big eyes, we are engineered to think those faces are very cute. Also, as this comment says, because of the fat in the eyelid unlike other races, Asian eyes get droopy. So a lot of senior Asians get eyelid surgery to remove fat. These misunderstandings need to be clarified and I hope my comment may correct your prejudice that you might get from the wrong source. Thanks.

As someone who grew up in China, I feel that I have the right to jump in and clarify this:Asians do NOT undergo the double eylid surgery to look more Western. Having double eyelids makes your eyes look bigger, and big eyes are considered to be UNIVERSALLY attractive on women because they are associated with innocence and youthfulness. In middle school, we read a Chinese novel written 400 years ago which describes a beauty having "snow-white skin and almond (big & upward slanted) eyes". This was before China had any Western influence. Of course with globalization, more Asians are starting to accept the Western standards of beauty. The same can be said about the West, with more people going to the tanning salon nowadays. But In the end, everyone is just trying to fit into their own culture's standards of beauty. This has nothing to do with wanting to "change your identity".

CHINESE & KOREANS GET EYELID & OTHER SURGERIES TO LURE WHITE PEOPLE INTO MARRYING THEM. They have successfully married whites in good numbers since doing this surgery in the 80s. Because they want their children to have bigger eyes. IN CHINESE CUSTOMS, YOU'RE ONLY BEAUTIFUL IF YOU HAVE BIGGER EYES. Ask a Chinese senior if you don't believe. (China & Korea are the plastic surgery capitals of the world.)
IT'S NOT RACISM WHY THEY DO THIS SURGERIES IN USA, Australia, Canada, England & others. Why? Because Chinese in China & Koreans in Korea get this surgeries too, in the same %, around 80% of them.

Jamba Lyer I never said all Asians have small eyes, WTH? Most Asiatic people do have noticeable eye folds and different eye shapes, but eye folds and shape varies from regions or ethnic groups. I know there are some Asian countries or cultures that have high rates of surgeries to remove eye folds to meet a certain standards of their country, but some of that is attributed to the Eurocentric West. People can counter that, and say that some Whites have issues with their skin color and want to get tans or darken their hair. Some Whites have surgical enhancements because they want bigger booties or breast because they may see that in other ethnic groups or it maybe to just meet the perceptions of the West's standards of beauty. .

Im Korean, i have hazel eyes while most of my friends have brown. that doesnt make me look white! if we really wanted to look white, we would have tanned and put on makeup with western style. the style of makeup in Asia and western countries are different. also we like pale skin because it gives us a youthful look and was a symbol of wealth in the past.

There are soooo different reasons for getting double eyelid surgery that aren’t all just “to look Caucasian” like yes us Asians may not naturally have double eyelids whereas white people do, that doesn’t mean we want the eyelids to look white. Double eyelids make eyes look bigger and there are many influences within Asian cultures that depict large eyes as a form of youth and beauty that don’t even derive from Eurocentric roots and another reason could be makeup I know growing up I wanted double eyelids not to look white but bc I wanted my eyeliner to be seen when my eyes were open lmaooo y’all gotta understand how upsetting it is to spend time on eyeliner and have it not be seen

The surgery was first developed and performed in Korea by Dr. D. Ralph Millard, an American military plastic surgeon who was stationed in the country during the Korean War (1950-53). Among the very first Koreans who received the particular procedure were Korean war brides who married American soldiers
During the war, Korean eyes without the crease ― referred to as the superior palpebral fold in American medical texts ― were dubbed “slanted,” and were seen as a mark of inscrutability and deviance. In her text, Kim argued that it was significant that Millard, who is one of the pioneers of Asian double eyelid surgery, was a military surgeon whose experience of Asian bodies was firmly rooted in Cold War ideologies and discourses.

I see some people commenting about how most 'Asians' have monolids. I definitely do not notice that where I come from, which is Malaysia, and most of the people I mix with are Malaysian-Chinese. Most of us have double eyelids, or maybe hooded double eyelids. Not many at all have monolids. If anything, something very common over here is uneven eyelids, whether it be one double and one mono, or just double lids with uneven creases. I definitely don't think it's 'trying to be white' to want to have even eyelids, to have the frustration of having to deal with different looking eyelids every morning. For those with just plain monolids, having the surgery can make them look more awake. And these surgeries don't even make eyes look 'white', they just create the classic 'Asian' double eyelids. It is true that many Asians consider white people to be better-looking, but we don't get surgery TO LOOK WHITE. Double eyelids/bigger eyes are almost UNIVERSALLY considered to be beautiful, just like white straight teeth, and nobody's condemning anybody for wanting to get braces or their teeth whitened.

Tyra should have done more research. According to this korean plastic surgeon, double eyelids tend to give a friendlier appearance. Since the first impression is important in Korean (and I think he said East Asian culture in general) a lot of parents buy eyelid surgery for their kids to improve their job chances (btw I think Monolids are beautiful but he was stating why some people prefer double eyelids).
Also at QOVES video on East Asian beauty standards they stated that Japanese women from the 1800s or earlier just prefer the appearance of double eyelids to monolids. It has nothing to do with looking white and she made herself look like a fool.

There's undeniably a "eurocentric" ideal of beauty, and you can hear this straight from the mouths of many Asian's. Of course this doesn't mean every single Asian who seeks the double-eyelid surgery has this in mind (as there are always exceptions to generalizations), but I think it was admirable that Tyra shared her own struggle and experience growing up and I imagine her own battle with physicality has affected her perception (not entirely wrongly so, but it's probably why she over did it)

Little you know about makeup, they put so much above the eye and they put eyeliner below and above the eye, this makes the eyes more defined and appears bigger (much similar to circle lenses that have an outer limbal ring that enlarges the eyes)
Plus the double fold does make the eyes bigger, it makes a peripheral area above the eye implying that it belongs to the eye and thus it makes it bigger.
"Longer" eyes, you probably refer to cat-like feline make-up, but nothing to do with asian eyes.

I think that everyone has a right to change their image if they feel it makes them happy. I don't think it has to do anything with erasing your ethnicity or anything else. I am Latina but have afro-centric features and want to get lipo and a tummy tuck because I think it would make my body look great after having had two kids. I won't be any less Latina if I do that and neither is anyone else who changes their look through any means. The fact of the matter is, Tyra was being very pushy about the subject and made that poor girl incredibly uncomfortable for no reason. While it is true that people should be happy with their natural appearance, I have never met a person who was 100% satisfied with every part of their body. Some people choose to live with it and some choose to change it and both are valid choices. My only issue with plastic surgery is the risk you take of something going wrong but other then that we know that we live in a world where beauty matters a lot even for professional careers. Everyone wants to be beautiful and beauty is viewed differently in every culture so to that girl, more power to you. To all those who choose to live out your lives naturally, power to all of you too. Instead of tearing each other down why don't we build each other up instead. Food for thought.

@AnTra23: Having straight hair in the black community does not necessarily translate into wanting to be 'white' so to speak, but having straight/white girl hair is a characteristic that is predominately wanted in the black female community because of the sadly misconstrued ideal of beauty (Eurocentric). Although wanting straight hair doesn't always mean this, as a black female, there is by far a negative impression within the black community concerning 'natural black kinky hair'.

  • @JillianValle
    @JillianValle 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I love Tyra but she took this way too far. Usually it's not even about looking more European. Did she not consider how DIFFICULT it is to apply make up evenly to hooded eyes especially so that is can be seen? Especially if both eyes are not equivalent in their hoodedness? That's why people most often get this surgery. And yes, hooded eye do rest on or over your eye lashes which can be very uncomfortable especially when looking up in the slightest. I am disappointed in Tyra for not really giving this woman a chance to talk or fully explain herself and for not exploring exactly why this surgery is so common.

non asians just won't get it unless they already know people like that. Having a monolid does come with certain difficulties like lashes poking the eyes just like if you had bigger thighs your pants would be tighter and less comfortable. It isn't bull at all, it is obvious and only fair enough. Some old korean people like 80 and 90 get eyelid surgery cause their wrinkly heavy lids make it difficult to see. Some kids are born with monolidded eyes and develop double eyelids in their teens. Meanwhile I used to have a flat nose and it suddenly began growing in my preteens, just like a women's breasts would lol. My cousin who has natural double eyelids once lost a double eyelid on one eye due to her obesity becoming more extreme. Some asian eyelids are not as set-in-stone as other races, ya know. It really is about our race and culture and tyra mishandled an entire human race. Imagine if an asian woman tried to lecture a black woman all about kinky hair versus "good hair", how insulting it would be for black women? Just the same thing.

I think that is because mostly everyone in the world already have double eyelids so its one of those things that we ignore or treat as unimportant, but to Koreans and other Asians seems to be an important part of their physical appearance!

Tyra is rude.. she is honest and open about the surgery. The reason why, who cares? Leave her alone damn

I am telling you that "changing" the eyes in shape and size is something done daily with make-up. Why making a permanent change have to be so bad? Some girl have permanent make-up tattooed on their features.
I like the after effect, and she likes it as well. You can call me a racist for liking big eyes (or big eye effect with surgery or make up) but I don't care how you feel about it.
I also like straight or wavy hair more than really curly or kinky hair texture, will you judge me for this too?

Tyra, just because she got double eyelid surgery, DOES NOT mean she wants to look Caucasian. It does not mean that she wants to change her ethnicity. And you DONT KNOW what her real reason of getting the surgery was. So stop acting like you know why she had it done.

You learned about internalized racism from the Tyra show over a decade ago. Congrats to you for getting educated for free.

Sometimes people tease because their jealous of that which they tease you for. Kids do it cuz they are most honest, but don't know they hurt your feelings. As you get older and hopefully see other people and places with those who may look like or resemble you, you see that beauty comes in ALL different races and ethnicities. Im Happy to Be Nappy!

Should have kept her original eyes. Most look better with a crease but hers actually looked better prior. Practically all Koreans try to erase their ethnicity, no one's authentic anymore.
