dude! you made one of one of the best how to videos i have ever seen on youtube on any subject. just the right pace (not to fast or slow), it covered every single detail, great camera work, etc.
I have to change out my prius inverter soon and your video will make it relatively easy for me. many thanks for taking the time to make this excellent video.

I got an inverter from a salvage yard and didn’t notice the front connector was cut instead of being disconnected. Now that I’ve removed my inverter from the car is it worth disassembling the bottom of both to swap the connector or should I return the inverter to the salvage yard and ask for one with all the connectors?

i notice you dont say anthing about the pump. is it SOP to change the pump when you change the inverter? i've read that pumps go out faster than inverters and often cause the inverter failure

Thanks brotha! But I wouldn’t change the pump until you see that it is a problem! If you look inside the inverter coolant tank and see the fluid circulating inside then that means the pump is working good!

Last week I brought my 2008 prius gen 2 with 141k miles (I bought it last year for 7500 usd from an old couple) to the Toyota dealer in The Netherlands. A big red triangle on the dash with the car and exclamation sign on the touchscreen came up. It said there was something wrong with the hybrid package.
The dealer did some reading on the car, and they told me the dc converter did not convert well so the risk of getting a short circuit in the hybrid system is pretty high.
They told that the dc converter cost without taxes about 3000 USD, with labour cost it will cost around 5000 to 6000 USD in total.
However, they said that when you replace the dc converter it is still not problem free. Other problems that are connected to the dc converter or hybrid system might occur.
Is this true? Or is this a protocol of the dealer to communicate such things?
They offered me to sell the car to them for 2000 USD.
Should I keep and fix it elsewhere or sell the car?

I had just bought this Prius and drove it home 10 miles with just about every light in the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. I changed the oil took pictures of the codes and sent it to my friend who owned a repair shop 20 miles away. He said “bring it in.”
I was doin 70mph On the freeway everything normal then out of nowhere the rpms started screaming high. ( I had it connected to my scan tool on live data setting to watch the coolant temp ( -stable at 170 degrees))
So the rpms doubled and it started speeding with my foot off the pedal. I actually had to keep my foot on the brake to stay under the speed limit.
That's when I pulled over and checked my scan tool for a new code.
I took screen shots both before the drive and while stopped, it only had the same codes as before.
I spent at least 20-30 minutes on the shoulder of the freeway with the car still in ready mode while also talking to a policeman who stopped to help, ( all this time depleting the traction battery because the motor was not cycling on)
When I started driving again it was in limp mode not going over 20 mph. It would only go short distances (less than 1 mile at a time) and then stop completely. It took me shutting it off and restarting 3 or 4 times to go another 3 or 4 miles at 20mph. About 2 miles before the next exit it stopped again. There were 2 more police there helping someone else. They asked me why I stopped. I explained how it was limping not going over 20 and only a few thousand feet at a time time. so we made a plan for the police to escort me across the merging on-ramp interstate junction and then off at the next exit in 2 miles. I told police to expect it wouldn't go over 20 but I kinda put the gas pedal to the metal to get across the merging on ramp and it went back into having screaming high rpm's and I had to keep my foot on the brakes again to stay below speed limit (especially now since I had a police escort behind me).
In 2 miles I took the exit as planned with my police escort, when I stopped at the first red light rpms were still screaming but then it went back into limp mode. Light turned green I limped another 1/2 mile at 10 mph before it stopped for good on the side of the frontage road.
Prius would not even turn on at this point.
The next day I brought a hybrid battery I had just finished rebuilding. I replaced it and it drove another 3 miles into a friends shop where it sat for months but they couldn’t help me other than to have the catalytic converter stolen from there.
So then I drove it back home 20 miles with a missing catalytic converter breaking every noise ordinance in a dozen cities in between with all of these same problems repeated including battery gave out again, it turned out to be another 2 day trip d/t needing replaced the traction battery again along the way.
Finally on return trip day 2 with rpms screaming and the noise amplified by 1,000 d/t the missing cat converter, I pulled back into my driveway and parked it.

No have you tried the compressor?

im not receiving voltage to the compressor. all fuses is good. i was told is the wiring in the inverter. i bought one of eBay and i might attempt to replace it.

yes the inverter / convertor / charger has a board within it that feeds direct three phase electric supply to ac compressor

Update, change the inverter very simple thanks to this video. If you could make one replacing ac compressor i would appreciate it. I got voltage to compressor but the harness to compressor doesn't match the new inverter.

So, could you tell me what the symptoms look like with a bad inverter. Currently my Prius will run fine for a while and suddenly the engine will start running about 3000 rpm constantly and I lose all power. I had two codes one was for an inverter and the other was for a coolant control valve. I fixed the coolant control valve so I’m assuming my problem is the inverter. And by the way, you wanna talk about road rage? I stop at the red light and it takes me forever just to get to 20mph. People MF me! I just laugh and record them with my phone. 😂

Inverters hardly ever go bad. If you want to check and see if your inverter pump is working then open up the inverter coolant reservoir and make sure you can see the coolant circulating and if it is then your pump is good. Also when your car dies check on the center display and on the top left it will show an overheating symbol

Chad I have the exact same problem, I wish he knew the answer or he would assess it better.
I have 2 spare inverters and I might just throw one in to see if that fixes it.
Let me know what you found out.

I wish there was a decent video out there on the abs actuator pump. Mine works but keeps cycling on then off and repeats about every 5 seconds. The pumps are not repairable or at least that is what the "experts" claim. I am sure it is a simple fix but the problem what is wrong... LOL

I've replaced a few cells on the HV battery on a 2004 Prius. After everything is put back together, the car won't go to "Ready" mode. What did I do wrong?
