Actually I found a kickstarter for Nightmare World. But it's from 2017 and it's a book. Also that same creator running his 15th campaign (all seem to be book/graphic novel related) so that indicates that even if there is a ks campaign with same name that campaign is still not a scam. Also if you look hard enough you can find every kickstarter campaign page, even if said campaign failed or was canceled. So any claim of kickstarter scam would have some evidence, not only word of mouth.

As a formaer member of the first team that went to work on Nighmare World. Yeah. We were all just there of our own accord, at first for goofs on the follies of Dreamworld. Then when things started to come together and started to look kinda neat we felt it could have been a serious project. NO ONE was promised any money. There was no money that was gotten from anywhere for the project. We just did it for fun. I left when I actually came upon a good sum of money elsewhere for other reasons and because I was still working a very busy job during the Covid period. I signed an NDA was the only bit of seriousness towards the end of my tenure.
The only thing I'd like to see is an acknowledgement of everyone who worked on the game during all of its periods if they want to be acknowledged. And even that wouldn't kill me. I got my own projects going on, and life things to worry about something that was fun for a couple of months.

I and many others repeatedly asked (on the discord) if there was, or if there was going to be, a kickstarter, because I'd have happily chucked a few quid at the project, but there never was. I seem to recall a time when something was said like "Not at the moment, and we're not sure if there will be, but it'll be in the discord if we do decide to go that route", presumably before they had decided which funding avenue to pursue (it was some time ago so my memory is hazy on the subject).

    • @DreaMeRHoLic

Well, the thing is that YES, UE5 nanite saved them and anyone that knew UE4 new how impossible Dreamworld would be (what? You want me to DL terrabites of assets before i can even join the server just to have the PC crash? This doesnt work in minecraft... what makes you think it would work in UE4?)
But in the end I said at the start of the drama "this looks like 2 guys that found a way to get money from wallstreet to create their own company. The question now becomes if they can hire the right people with the money" and for sure the drama didnt make it easy.
Looking back you could've taken the that investor money as well and i guess the ironic part here is that mr "i got left at the altar" and "Mr was a google ace" now got a working company even after the "bad press" that made it hard for them to find talent. You could go even harder and say "well, at least they released a game and the "AAA dev project" that wanted to show them how you run a company and build their own popularity of their mistakes didnt make it to the public.
Why do i say this? I've studied industrial management and always have to deal with workers who think that i'm just the office guy that dont understand their work and they dont understand mine. They can create things... but in the end you dont let the welder isnt the one who runs the company. They got players now... by that metric they're doing better than many game studios.
You might be an ace dev... but if you know the HBO show "Silicon Valley" then you know that you might need an Erlich Bachman or Donal "Jared" Dunn if you're Richard Hendrix. Sure, there was no way of telling if we got 2x Erlich Bachmman here... but looking back it is as always the consistently that ends/finshes projects/dreams. People got into the honeymoonphase and enjoyed dunking on two easy targets, this is why you had 20 talanted devs that you could work with and they had nothing but bad PR.
Again... Nanite saved them, but pulling of the AI creation and could that seems to transfer assets is genius and to even get hired at google means something i guess ( i dont think that many would make the interviewphases)
edit: Nice 86GT and I had Ulnar groove syndrome in my left arm... sorry to hear your arm is messed with permanently. I pinched it with the edge of my arm and the desk while watching a movie and didnt notice...took me month to gain back a feeling in my small dinger (feels strange if you press shift/strg with a numb finger...)

    • @jellyman5k
      @jellyman5k 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@DreaMeRHoLic Completely unrelated for the most part, but I'm glad you noticed the syndrome relatively early. I went months until I noticed the entire right side of my left hand (directly down the middle, cutoff point was past my ring finger) was numb. Saw a doctor, they did some motor tests with my fingers and immediately came to the conclusion that I needed surgery. One ulnar nerve transposition later (they take the nerve associated with the "funny bone" and moved it somewhere in my arm that wouldn't be compressed by muscles), a ton of physical therapy, and I'm left with about 80% of my original grip strength. Could've been worse, but it progressed too much to prevent permanent damage. Occasionally I get a weird sensation, I call it "phantom numbness". It only lasts as long as I pay attention to it, and it essentially feels like I'm wearing a very thin glove over that half of my hand. There's definitely a mental "trauma" that I don't think will ever entirely go away.
It's served as a great reminder for me to actually pay attention to how I move my body, and when I feel something isn't right. Especially for desk workers, since the symptoms will be aggravated if you're resting your arms incorrectly. WHOEVER READS THIS, DON'T OVERLOOK ERGONOMICS!
Sorry for the ramble, I don't normally see other people who've experienced this. Makes me feel a little better about the whole thing.

I used to love trolling in comment sections, nowadays that's almost impossible as forums get increasingly toxic, seemingly everyone hates everyone and everything.
Hell, even in game forums it gotten so bad at this point that everything is apparently broken and imbalanced according to a ton of people, let alone daring to give people tipps on how to deal with enemy types that pretty much no one I've seen playing struggles with.
It's so ironic what especially the gaming space has become that it often almost feels like we've entered an alternative reality where TV "Documentaries" about Games making violent and causing mental issues seem to be in the right.

I'm not talking about "T-Bagging (which for some reason is toxic nowadays)", Trash talking or other stuff that's "newly toxic" (altho could already result in a ban ages ago) - I'm talking about how gaming is discussed at this point in general and how most discussions go down - which more often than not is delusion above everything else which has seen a massive change in the past ~7 years for the worse. The majority of people still just play their games and don't even participate in those, so if you believe them to be the majority then I got bad news for you: it's the exact same as showcased here: Small groups trying to annoy everyone/spin a narrative or at worst believe what they say.
You know? The part that usually also complains that they got banned from forums for "no reason" by just "giving constructive negative feedback" while a ton of people somehow can do precisely that without getting thrown out, which has become increasingly common.
Same as it has become increasingly common for people to throw their brain away and complain that sequels of live service games don't have as much content + polish + extra features as a game that got supported (and sold tons of mtx to even allow further developement) with constant updates for years.

To add onto what people have said, but while it's true that the malicious rumours are not your fault, the information gap is.
Keep in mind that you have made a bit of a TH-cam career out of critiquing scam games. When you start your own game , but information just drops out, then you leave malicious actors a great deal of rope with which to hang false rumours. And many people will not pay attention to Discord, streams, or even the TH-cam community posts.
It would have been really easy to make a video say exactly what you said here, that people are working again, you want to pay people an actual salary, and that you're looking for an investor. You could have put the project on hiatus, and then whenever anyone asked, "What happened to Nightmare world," we could point them toward that video.

They don't question the source, they don't question if they misunderstood, sometimes they even fill in details that weren't present in the original? Like it doesn't even occur to some people that you can't just... rewrite reality this way?

    Funding is hard, especially nowadays.
Publishers only fund small projects under 500k usd because it’s low risk with a small chance of high rewards or big projects above 10 millions with big names who left their company to create their own studio.
Nightmare world is probably between those 2 figures, I don’t know the scope you planned but I’d say you are looking at 3 to 5 millions.

Tbh surprised you found willing investors in the first place, because a game like that costs a lot (reasonable wages would put costs per year already above 500k for a team of 20) and given the current state of gaming it is very high risk.
Also this could possibly be a good learning experience for people to understand how costs work and how that does affect development and management decisions.

In the case you want to make that game, make sure it actually has something special that sets it apart from the rest. "Nightmare"... I saw a platformer which was quite interesting, it was like a common Mario-style game, but at some point everything turned into a nightmare version. The atmosphere changed, the music changed, and creatures changed into something where their bodies were stretched high and looked gruesome. I think the idea has a lot of potential, and something like that could be adapted into a RGP too.

7:50 I said it under the community post as well and repeat it here: Nightmare World started out as a project from your TH-cam videos. Updates on hour-long streams on Twitch or Discord do not reach the main audience the project started out with. I also don't expect multiple paragraphs of a comment explaining the Nightmare World state under a video that had nothing to do with Nightmare World.
I'm a TH-cam watcher. I found your channel with DreamWorld and followed your TH-cam channel for videos. I generally have no interest in streams (not you specifically, just in general) and I'm already on enough other Discord servers that pertain to my hobbies (gaming, Genshin Impact, and reverse engineering/game modding) I can't afford to join Discord servers for every TH-camr I watch, so I didn't join yours.
And I'd say I was one of the core audience back then. Now your video frequency is down by a lot and you never talked about Nightmare World ever again, so what am I supposed to think? That the project died and you just don't want to talk about the failure of getting the project anywhere. Why did I expect that last sentence to be true? Given how much you shat on DreamWorld and started Nightmare World more or less out of spite (or as a challenge, doesn't matter), you suddenly stopping on giving Nightmare World updates or even remotely acknowledging it on your TH-cam channel makes it feel like you bit off more than you can chew and your arrogance was completely unfounded. The same with your Earth 2 prototypes, but at least you actually delivered there on your channel.

    • @Delaterius

I disagree. If he did bite off more than he can chew, his "arrogance" would still be completely founded because he did not swindle money out of people by claiming he could do something he can't. He was totally honest about an unfunded community project. That's not even remotely similar to what he was calling out which was people taking money by fraudulently claiming to be able to do something they had no ability to do

    • @Nassifeh
      @Nassifeh 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

I mean, even if you thought the project died... why would you be mad about it? The whole point of it was just to see if a bunch of volunteers could in short order put together something that kinda worked. Lots of things don't work out. I appreciate transparency, but like, I didn't pay for this, nobody got paid for this.
Okay, so you only watch the posted videos, you don't follow other stuff. I'm also that person! And I'd practically forgotten this was a thing and was just like "oh!" when I saw the video title pop up. This is a lot of words about how you don't care enough to follow up to then act like you were personally entitled to updates. You can't have both of those things at once, dude. This just comes off so weird and bitter for someone who couldn't muster the tiniest effort to gather information in the meantime.
