    Drew’s interview with Brooke Shields was so wonderful to watch because their lives paralleled one another. It’s a shame how this industry chews up young people and spits them out. It’s a miracle Drew and Brooke and other celebs have survived and built healthy lives for themselves.

  • @mikechoe97

    Wow, having been born in the late 90's, I never realized Drew had such a wild past. Her image as far back as I can remember has always been extremely wholesome, kind spirited and innocent. It's crazy how this history of hers isn't more commonly known today, like Robert Downey Jr. for example. Thanks as always Dodford, for the fresh pop culture insights conveyed through extremely sophisticated mini documentaries.

I also just loving seeing the stories of people that struggled horribly but made it back out, because it's always that cliche of like "if they can do that, I can do this" and like it's said all the time but I genuinely love it.

      Also Adam Sandler was a massive help to her I think, he gave her a big part when he was one of the biggest stars around and she was still considered a risk. Something that one guy did for him, that one director gave him a chance when he was a major star but not considered right for drama.

  • @itsdavidmora
    @itsdavidmora ปีที่แล้ว +9

    😔 I don’t believe the narrative arc you present. To me, it glosses over the deeper psychological issues at play in her life, most startlingly the fact she relies on *movie characters* to find and assert her own character (which you readily use for storytelling without actually addressing directly)
    The deeper story here is what happens when a child grows up in an environment where her sense of self is created through performance, rather than interaction with healthy adult role models. This is something that has become increasingly relevant in the age of social media, and I think you’ve missed the sobering way Drew foreshadows this.
    To me, the Dodford-worthy story here isn’t, “girl breaks curse of addiction”, it’s “look at how mass media will sacrifice children for money, and how those same children will turn to it to try to heal themselves again.”
    You’re an amazing storyteller. But I feel like you reached for the easy story, not the truest one.

    What the hell does her mother mean ‘I would go my way and she would go hers’, she’s a child? No wonder they were estranged. Thanks for not letting 13 yr old Drew drink and drug herself to death but how about parenting in the first place? Idc what situation or scenario you are in, parenting and protecting the child comes FIRST.

    Well that was a fun little fairy tale, but anyone who thinks her childhood was due simply to her starring in some commercials and her mother's negligence/some family curse is definitely living in a fantasy. She was clearly put on parade through Roman Polanskis favorite playground for the likes of people who put 12 year olds in playboy, and it's a shame in our day and age this is still sugar coated.

    I feel like this was the path that a lot of young stars have been through with varying levels of success coming out of the other side... It's so sad to see these brilliantly talented, outgoing kids be brought into the circus which is Hollywood with such awful support or protection.
    Another brilliant insight, amazing work as always!

    She was born in to Hollywood's most iconic family. But a smooth ride was never in the cards for Drew Barrymore. Catapulted into fame at seven after starring in Spielberg's E.T., little Drew Barrymore was quickly exploited by the industry, enabled by her family, and criticised by the media. Years of reckless partying ensued, until Drew was put in rehab for addiction at the age of 13. But this tale of tragedy is a trend when it comes to the Barrymores - which poses the question: was this all part of Drew's Barrymore curse?

    Her experience as a young girl reminds me of Shirley Temple's. Lots of weird adults with no boundaries.
