How do longboarders slow down when going fast?

  • Decided to revist and revamp an old video I did.
    I've highlighted the main ways on how to stop on your longboard and shave off a considerable amount of speed. They all take time to learn but are pretty fun to do once you get them down.
    Might decide to do weekly videos every wednesday instead. Been busy over the day to commit enough time to making the video.
    To shave off tiny amounts of speed you could also airbrake and carve. They might just be what you need to make it round a corner or safely down a hill.

    Brother, I am 34 and used to skate. I just got in from a near catastrophic midnight skate. I went down a decent bendy road near my home, and was like "Woo! No sweat. No need to panic. I totally avoided that construction sign in the intersection."
    Then, around that curve....was a bigger hill and I realized I was now barreling down it gaining speed. I literally just started longboarding today after not really skating for 16 years. My brain was like, JUMP. So I jumped off and had to do the fullest sprint I have ever done since high school... Then, my next problem...
    Chasing the board as fast as I could as it shot down the road along the curb. I quickly caught up, but couldn't get down to grab it so I kicked it swiftly and luckily is flipped on to its back.
    You don't truly know yourself until you see how you react in pure adrenaline moments.
    It was thrilling. But I am definitely scoping my roads out beforehand next time AND bring helmet and protective gear. I easily could have taken a hospital grade beating.

    You should do a video of a close up on where the feet should be on the board during the transition between riding to sliding. it would help beginners learn where the weight should be put down on more.!

      Thats more a thing of personal preference. You gotta figure out what works for you.
      Personally, I like having my back foot closer to the back truck for sliding, but closer to the centre of the board for tucking ..
      Some people don't like moving their feet at all and can tuck, heelside, and toeside all from the same positon

      Its pretty hard to do it at high speeds since you basically need to balance yourself on one foot. Practicing skating on one foot goes a long way. Youll feel where your board is most stable. Start braking at low speeds and gradually build up your maximum speed that you feel comfortable braking with.

    • @JeremyBoyes

    Don't know why I haven't seen that earlier and why it popped up on my feed just now but...
    I must strongly disagree that foot-braking is the easiest and safest way to slow down. In my case it's actually quite opposite. Even at speeds around 60km/h which is not even that fast, I have big problems to take one foot off the board. I'm losing stability and I feel very uncomfortable. Grabbing the board and taking the foot off is even harder for me and I can't do that even at very low speeds and even if it eventually happens, I can't put it back on board afterwards. I do agree that it's the most controllable way to slow down if you're doing it properly. I'm goofy by the way, push with my back foot but my dominant foot is the right (front) foot so maybe that has something to do with it.

    • @downhill254skate
      @downhill254skate  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I meant, it is the easiest method as it doesn't take very long to get good enough to use it. I do think having a fairly strong front leg is important too.
      I've taught people to use the swiss footbrake within a session and they've been confident with it, enough to do it down runs. but yeahm, these things need practice.
      I'd say 60kph is too fast for the normal footbrake. If you go that fast, you should know how to slide at least or the swiss footbrake

    • @downhill254skate
      @downhill254skate  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a whole video altogether. In short, hard wheels slide easier but have a sharper hookup (or definition between sliding and gripping). Softer wheels are hrder to slide but will feel more buttery and have a soft hookup.
      Sharp lips want to grip the road and resist sliding whilst round lips will breakout easier and not grip as much.
