I'm a snipping tool junkie, that's probably the single most useful feature included with Windows besides the clock. I've found the easiest way to print a jpeg for me is to simply copy and paste it into a word document. I never thought of using Photoshop, but it's not nearly as snappy on my machine as it looked to be on yours. Great Sketch Up tutorial. Every time I use it to draw something, I find myself repeating your commands in my head: "space bar - triple click - G for component; M for move, P for push-pull," etc.
Ctrl for copy x5. I had to hear that 5 times until I got it!!!. Awesome Jay. Thanks to you I downloaded SU and I'm working with it, it's a fantastic piece of software. On my day job I use a lot the snipping tool, and the easiest way to print stuff from it is just paste it on a new word document, don't even need to Ctrl+C on the snipping tool because it's already on the clipboard once captured. I wanted to create a layout to put DRIcore into a closet going under the stairs in the basement. 2D helped me layout the panels. I knew about the ruler but didn't know how to use it well. I always started from a corner which makes the guidelines hard to delete. Your way of starting on an edge is so much simpler. I didn't know the dimensions tool existed. So simple to use too! The only problem is that I won't use SketchUp often enough to remember the tricks. I'll have to re-reference your video every time. Anyway, great video and thanks again!

Jay, I really appreciate the way you explain how to use SketchUp, especially the way you include in your narration the keyboard shortcuts you use to access the various tools. Really well done, and thank you. You mentioned that you were going to use your plunge router to drill the marble holes. I am imagining all sorts of jig arrangements to accurately place each of the holes, but wouldn't this be an ideal use for the X-Carve machine? Maybe you cover that on your website...headed there now... Again though, thank you for your outstanding SketchUp videos.
Jay 42"+\- TV monitor mounted on the wall next to the cabinet + wireless keyboard and mouse = PC stays in the house but is back in the shop. Put the keyboard and mouse in a drawer when you're not using them and it doesn't take up any space. You don't have to look at plans on a tiny call phone screen.... Bonus you can watch the lions on Sunday!

+The Wood Lab I've had the taskbar on top for as long as I can remember. Makes a lot of sense considering everything you do when interacting with a window is on top. I think that started in Linux for me though.
Printing to scale right from Sketchup isn't so hard. 1. Set to Parallel Projection and one of the set views (ISO, Top, etc). 2. Resize the window so that it shows only what you want to print, no wasted space. 3. In the print window, make sure Fit to Page is unchecked, then enter the values you want in the Scale boxes (probably 1:1). If the Scale boxes are grayed out, you didn't do step 1.
Hi Jay. Greetings from Greece again. Since you don't care to have a proportional scaled image and you only need the layout and the dimensions, you can install a free PDF printer to "print" your schetchup drawing to a PDF file. Then with Adobe PDF Reader you have the option to print your document by selecting "Fit to Page" no matter how big it is.

Hi Jay, first of all, Thank You for your Sketchup vídeos that i´m seeing and at the same time testing on my pc. Now 2 things... I´m using Sketchup2015 and it's free for personal or educational uses, wich is my case as amateur woodworker. The second is one thing i can´t do and need your help... how do i select a rectangle or box as you do? When i have the arrow i can only select one thing (a line or a side), not the whole piece as you do at 2:40 min in the vídeo. I know it´s a silly question but really would like and need to know. Pls keep on the vídeos...almost forgetting...if possible a bit slower because for non English natives as i (and probably many others) as you use a lot of kbd shortcutcs sometimes is difficult to understand which letter you say :-) Thanks again.
If you would upgrade to Sketchup 2015 they have another program called Layout(it downloads as a bundle) that takes your SketchUp file and allows you to size to whatever paper you work with. Also allows you to annotate the drawing and add other drafting tags. Just an FYI for a more important/professional drawing.
just a quick question. i know this isnt an extremely important model but I notice on most of your sketch up videos you delete reference lines frequently but when i was learning sketch up my teacher told me to never delete a reference line. so my question is do you think its a good habit to never delete them or does it not really matter too much?
+DEMMERY11 Maybe your teacher is coming from a real 3D CAD environment (sketchup is far from that). There when you move a reference (be it a reference line, an edge of the model, center of a circle, whatever) everthing that has been reference off that thing will move with it. If you delete a reference everything that has referenced from that will become "invalid", because the model is no longer defined unambigously. I mostly just hide the lines.

Hello Jay...First, Thank You for your videos...Very inspirational...! As Scott Noyes say, Sketchup can print to scale, if you are in parallel projection. I print 2D drawings and section cuts from it and have them on different scene tabs. There are several videos on the tube that shows this, maybe Jay2 (the guy with the broom) can investigate...? The quick and dirty way I get my images to print is to get the image however I want it and as large as I can, then press the "Print Screen" key. I then open up a blank Word document and select "Paste". I can then crop and re size the image as required and also add any text required.
Nice. Thank you. I start with a shift Z. Then resize with no wasted space. I like to use Grab app on Mac. Then paste into GIMP for Mac. Edit the image as needed. Then either export as JPG or paste into word to print with narrow margins. As Scott Noyes posted a solution to printing to scale. On Mac mine would not work until I ticked OFF Vector Printing in File | Print ... dialog. Doing this on Mac also messed up my current model. So save to backup first. Then tick OFF Vector Printing. Close model WITHOUT saving. Also on mac when setting the File | Document Setup .. | .scale to 1:1, change the In Drawing to 1 then change the In Model to 1 then click on the In Drawing again to update In Model successfully. You'll know when the Pages Required changes to a hight number in red. Then File | Open Recent ... . Then print EXACTLY BYy FOLLOWING EACH STEP as Scott details. +WoodRodent Sadly they still don't have a mouse re-binding option, but you can bind Top View to a button to always reset if you mess up. Go to Window->Preferences->Shortcuts-> scroll down to find Camera/Standard Views/Top, then add a shortcut key on the right.
+WoodRodent Hello...Do you have a mouse with a wheel...? If you hold shift dowm while pressing the Wheel Down...you will Pan only. Hope this helps. tip2: Use shift+Z for zooming to the extent of project. tip3: Also, I have a shortcut for top view... makes it easy to get back in place. I tip4: also have a shortcut for toggle between parallel and perspective.

Mac has build in snipping tool: Cmd+Shift+4 brings up a selection tool when done the selected area is saved on the Desktop.

You do your scaling and printing in a separate program called Layout which comes with the pro version of SketchUp
