There are many kinds of wedding photography and no advice works for all photographers or all couples. I much prefer documentary wedding photography, where the photographer documents what happens but don't disturb the party to arrange photos, and change the look of authentic scenes in order to get a "better photo". In my opinion the photographer should take as little space as possible. Go in close, take great photos of what is actually happen, but don't control and interupt people's experience in order to get a better image and don't take over a moment by being the center of attention. A documentary photo with real emotions will always be stronger than a posed photo with perfect light. If the couple wants posed photos, set apart a separate time for them and let the rest of the day flow uninterupted. And let the posed photos feel as natural and relaxed as possible.

I was a wedding videographer for 8 yrs and I'm planning to switch to be a wedding photogragher this year. the main reason is to reduce the amout of equipment to bring in a wedding day. lol
Ive done 2 weddings as a photographer this past 2months and I really enjoyed it because all I have to bring just my camera, lens, flash card, batteries and it fits in my 10L sling bag. no tripod, gimbal, audio devices. And I saved a lot of my energy. I felt like I could shoot a 2 weddings in just 1 day.

At 3:25 you mention the importance of quality pictures on grandma’s fridge etc. You’re right. I always ask myself before taking a picture, is this something I would be proud of and print?

When I first started I thought weddings were definitely something I wanted to do, at least for awhile. Met a friend who had been shooting weddings for awhile and she was burned out and was hating photography. Seeing what she was going through made me quickly realize that I don't even care about if shooting weddings might be the best way to make money, if it comes at the expense of me hating it and hating photography, then I've completely lost the whole point of why I started photography in the first place.

Honestly.. Weddings are chaotic (I have shot a few) but one day of chaos and a few days of editing (with a business that’s set up right) isn’t bad for the pay. I haven’t found one day job from offices to retail that hasn’t burnt me out so I would rather take photos and think of what selling my soul to a day job felt like in comparison. Most other forms of photography honestly don’t make full time money and quickly become side hustles. I’m tired of side hustle money. That’s if you want to work in photography and like portraits/weddings generally though.

I shoot weddings full time and great points! I haven't had the burnout, as I do it full-time, with other content work spread out. I enjoy it, it's always a great day. Pressure is something you get to work with and I kind of like it. I usually recommend to others to just relax and shoot what you can. You can't get it all! BUt once you get a routine, you'll get the hang of it :) (I have done this professionally for around 6 years)

This really inspirational I don’t shoot wedding but I feel like in a way I’m using this advice for different styles of photography I’m doing or going to do for clients. Mitch says it remembering you have to get results for your client or someone else and not you, to me is a very nice way to change my mindset and how I think about photography. I think this also makes you go above and beyond and not take lazy shots. This can also trickle down into one’s photography as well but you need to see yourself as a client in a way that needs results.

100000% agree on everything you said. I shot a few weddings this year (second and lead), for the first time ever. Two weddings in, I realized that most genres of photography come into play in wedding photography. At first that was a bit of a shock to me because I felt uncomfortable in most of them. But you figure it out and the challenge is so much fun now! I can see how much I’ve improved this year. Much more than during my previous two years of being a hobbyist photographer only.
Btw: outstanding work that you showcased here, Mitch. Really, really good stuff.

I'd love to know how to book your first client and how to reach out to someone to second shoot without a portfolio, maybe also a video on how to shoot with flash and low light. I've actually been hesitant to get into the wedding industry because I'm introverted, I feel like that industry is geared towards more extroverted photographers - good to know that you could still be successful at it regardless.

So is it possible to use just one lens for a wedding and which one would you use?

    • @taunado

35mm as it represents an 'authentic' view, repping the human eye. I've worked with a few weddding photogs and most use Sigma Art lenses, specifically 18-35mm and 70mm for ceremony.

    To get such sharp background.

    • @BenasSventkauskas
      @BenasSventkauskas ปีที่แล้ว

Use high F stop number (your aperture). This is often used in very bright conditions since having for example F/16 will reduce the light coming into the lens, which means that you will have no separation between your subject and the backround.
To achieve the best results you could take two pictures - one exposing for the subject and another one exposing for the backround. you could then merge them in lightroom and have the best dynamic range to play with.

Offer to be a second shooter for free. Build a portfolio that way and leverage that to get your first client (probably someone who doesn't have the budget for an experienced photog, so it'll be rough in the beginning, but will build exponentially if you present great work and get good word of mouth. Don't make the mistake of over selling and under delivering, every client is very important for word of mouth.

Have a backup camera. Yes, you've got to be somewhat of a madman daredevil to do it, as it is risky af, but also very rewarding and fun when shit isn't hitting the fan. I'd say there's far less intense ways to make money, just about everyone who gets in looks for a way out - it can be a trap as you booking a year in advance, maybe more.
