  • The Filabot EX6 is a $12,000 professional-level system used for filament production. We go through A LOT of filament here at Slant 3D, so in-house filament production was a logical choice. After 2 years of use, we are here to give you our thoughts on this machine.

    For context. We did reach out to Filabot about accessing resplacment parts and additional troubleshooting expertise (via phone and email). We reached out after the machine was past the 1 year warranty. We have not receieved responses to phone or emails from filabot at any time.

      I don't know about ease of removal and installation, but their shop still sells a gearmotor replacement assembly for USD$211. That's at least twice what it listed at in 2018 but it's there for order and far cheaper than a full unit. That being said, thank you very much for your professional opinion on this device. Too many people who bother to talk about it at all just yesman or fanboy it without recognizing the niche or the limitations or pan it on the price alone without any explanation.

      @@claws61821 That gearmotor is specifically for the EX2. It will not work in an EX6.

      I’m confused. You’re saying in one comment you reached out to their customer service and they never responded. In another you are saying it’s custom parts that broke and they can’t be replaced. How would you know that without talking to the company first?
      You’re saying they use a motor and/or gearbox that are custom made? Doesn’t make any sense.

    • @simonlaker2139
      @simonlaker2139 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @matsysto often with these machine's the motor and or gearbox is made inaway that its not replaceable or the parts that need replacing are over priced that would blow out the cost of the machine to 60%of replacement.
      Machines today have a built-in end of life.
      Nothing is made to last.

    Would love to see a video on what you guys do with wasted filament from failed prints. I exclusively use hatchbox filaments and have large bins with failed prints. I would like to be able to recycle that filament into new rolls. Do you guys do anything like that? Great video.

    Do a teardown, It would be useful to see where the failure point was. Electric motors usually don't fail. You mentioned a gearbox. Those are relatively inexpensive to source. I'm guessing the steel screw is fine. The ceramic band heaters are ok? If it is a gearbox only, that isn't a major fix.

    What filament extruder would you recommend?

  • @rrittenhouse
    @rrittenhouse 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I was under the impression that the gearboxes on the motors (usually combined into a single part) are a consumable. But yeah, at that cost, that's crazy. It's 16-18k now.

    Some topics I'd be interested in...
    1. Do you have a auto filament spool swapping solution?
    2. Do you you use "infinite print" belts for print beds?
    3. Any sanely priced solutions out there for fiber "tow" extruders other than the Markforged?
    4. Any work on corona discharge based extruders? I've always thought it aught to be possible to leverage corona discharge for instantaneous heat response for perfect modelling of extruder state, plus the increased surface energy should reduce oozing and possibly increase layer adhesion esp. for low self-affinity materials like hdpe.
    5. Relatedly, are there any high end slicers out there that are worth it? I still find it frustrating that all the slicers I've used seem to treat retraction likes it's normal and fine and make no effort to minimize retraction or travel distance.

    So $12000/ 3000 rolls so cost to produce per roll was $4.
    What were you expecting? Of a lab production machine?
    What is the fix? Replace motor to more durable unit?
    [edit: so company didn’t get back which is poor service] What did company say when you reached out? As they may have said it’s a known issue and provided a rev2 motor/ fix. ARB had that with some suspension (bp-51) they made, they replaced far out of warranty as a known issue (a soft recall ie a customer complains then they fix).
    Sounds like you needed the next step up from this level based on your video.
    Maybe do a how yo fix video at least help other fix their out of warranty unit ls on the cheap. Perhaps a slightly bigger motor will make the machine unstoppable.
