This is a How To video for the Yamaha MOXF8 keyboard showing how to save/set-up voices and performances in Master Mode for easy access for live playing.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I don't read manuals, and it has taken me years to figure how to set my self up for live performance. I use so many voices when performing life. I am now NO longer confined to the four spots in Performance Mode. MASTER MODE is it for me!!!!
Hey Cathy! This is Writam from India. I am a visually challenged musician and also own a Yamaha MOXF6 Workstation. As a visually challenged musician, it is really difficult to find proper tutorials with regard to how to operate the keyboard. Two days back, I came across your tutorials. You explain really well! It’s really helpful! Please keep it coming! Thank you!
Thank you for this! I have just been enjoying playing the keyboard but reluctant to lose something by overwriting it. Glad to know they are not gone when I overwrite in the User space.
Hi Cathy-- can't thank you enough for this video. I have a gig tomorrow using my new MOXF6 and needed to figure out how to quickly change voices. This did the trick! All the Best to you from Syracuse NY!
Dear Cathy, thanks again for your videos. I never worked with the master mode so far, so this information is pretty new for me. What you show is an abbreviation to the favorites. I will try it ! Looking forward for further videos !! Regards from Darmstadt / Germany
Nice tutorial and thank you! I don't really get the point why Yamaha makes its operating logic so obscure and complicated with all these modes. A voice can be treated as a single-zone performance. A performance can be treated as a pattern with all real-time zones and no automated zones. A song can be treated as a single long pattern. And tada - all these modes converged into one mode.
Hi Cathy: great tip, like always. Keep doing more of these videos. I appreciate them very much. Checking the Data List manual for Moxf6/Moxf8, on page 47 is the Master Assign List which is 128 entries. If you divide 128 by 16 (the 1-16 buttons on the right side of the keyboard) it gives you 8, which are the A-F buttons on top right side of the keyboard, so I guess you can save 128 possibilities on Master!
Cathy, this worked great. Never could have figured this out without your help! Thank you! However, I noticed that the Voices that I saved in Song Mixer mode were slightly subdued than the original Voices. For instance the Full Concert Grand Piano in Voice mode sounds terrific, but when I save it as a quick access Song Voice, it sounds like it's in a tin cup with much less volume and very little resonance. I also noticed it on several of the guitar sounds as well. Tex Boogie has some nice distortion in the regular Voice mode but when I saved it as a Song Voice using the method in this video, the distortion is gone and the volume is much more subdued. This is the case with many of the Voices when saved as a Song Voice. Several of the unique guitar sounds end up sounding exactly the same. When I switch back over to Voice mode, they sound fine. Then going back to Song Mixer mode, they are flat and subdued with most of the special effects gone. Any idea why this might be. I would really like to save the original Voices in the Song Voice Mixer mode for this to be useful. Thanks for any ideas to help me solve this!
Sorry, Cathy. I posted this to the wrong video of yours. Please ignore the comment in this video. I didn't realize TH-cam advanced to the next video. I'll repost to the proper video.
Hi cathy, I decide to comment today, you are the Best, you have tech me how to take advantage of mi key board, no other tutorial have do e this for me, tha you
Love your videos! One thing I'd like to do is to use the keyboard like a drum machine that I could have play along with a piano or layered performance of some kind. So in effect I could play a live performace and add drums to whatever song I played using the other keyboard sounds. I know there is a drum assign switch but not quite sure how to make it do what I want. A video would really help!
If you want to just play piano along with drums, hit VOICE then hit DRUM ASSIGN (white button on upper RH side of keyboard), then hit Category Search which will now be showing Drum/Percussion. Choose the drum set/loops that you like and hit enter. If you want something other than piano, hit F2 and find the piano voice and there will be a few different options for you. Be sure to hit the F1 (play) button before you start playing. When you play the drums will start. BE SURE THE ARP on/off BUTTON IS ON (to the left of the screen on the keyboard). Use the SF keys to change the drum arpeggiations as you play. To turn off the drums hit the Arp on/off button (grey button to the left of the screen). To change the tempo of the drums hit F5 and dial up a new tempo. Hope this helps. I will try to make a video for more complex ways to use the drums.
Hi CATHY....thanks for your helpful videos.... Can you make one to teach how to copy an existing Performance in to a new location in order to create a new Performance with variations of the first.... This would be a great time saver to use a variety of performances with the same FX and controls using different voices for continuity of volume, levels etc in a a live show.....thanks
You need to watch my video "Yamaha MOXF8 How to Use Master Mode" and "Yamaha MOXF8 How to Save User Voices." I think between the two of these, you will learn how to save different performances or voices. You can edit a Performance, give it a new name, then assign it a User Voice number. Watch the videos and let me know if you still have questions.
Awesome Videos Cathy - I've watched most of them so far and they have saved me a ton of time! Would you know how to remove the 'key click' from the organ sounds?
I am not sure what you mean. My organ sounds don't have a "click." If you don't like one particular organ voice, try another. Or, perhaps you could go over to the left side of your keyboard where it says "Tone 1, Tone 2, Tone 3." Press Tone 2 and then using the knob above where it says "attack" you can change the "attack" of the voice when you strike the key. Maybe you can achieve what you desire this way.
Hi Cathy! It doesn’t seem possible to edit or layer sounds in Master Mode. Do I have that right? So I have to create the layered sounds, save as a Performance, and then line them up in Master Mode??? Also running into having to name ever new sound I create twice - once in performance mode and again on the button I assign it to in Master Mode. Correct? I’m learning so much THANKS TO YOU!!!!
Yes to your first two questions. As for renaming, you shouldn’t have to name it again in Master Mode. Go through the steps in the video carefully and make sure you aren’t skipping any. I am out of town and away from my keyboard right now so this is the best reply I can give.
Very helpful! Exactly what we needed to get a start on creating quick access to banks for our community theatre production of "Guys & Dolls". Thank you!
I would like to store combined layers or splits and have different octave ranges (ie .left portion 8va with right section 8ba). How or is this possible on M08?
I love your videos! I am learning so much valuable info from your channel! Thank you! (Do you know how to set which elements are controlled by the mod wheel? I use the Moxf8 at church every Sunday and I’d love to be able to adjust what the modulation wheel does to the voices I use. I’m looking to use a low pass frequency cutoff. I’ve googled it and it’s...confusing. Lol) Thanks again! 😀
Hi David, I checked the german version of the "Referenzhandbuch" (~160 pages). There are some hints how to assign functions via the mod wheel to voices. Starting with page ~17 you can walk through the document. Good luck !
Hi Cathy, how to assign the layered tones(performance/master mode) in patterns and songs? I want to assign different layered tones within a song/pattern. I have searched alot but able to select a single voice in 1 track _songs /patterns.
You don't add songs or patterns to master mode. When you record a song or a pattern, you record it on a certain song or pattern number that shows up in the display window. After you have recorded your song, you should name it and then hit "store." It will then be stored on the keyboard under the song number that you recorded it on. To call up a song or pattern, just hit "song" (or "pattern") and then dial up the number of the song. Hit play and it will be there! (Watch my videos about how to record a song.)
I'm not sure I know what you are asking . . . When you make a recording on the keyboard, you can then save that recording to a USB flash drive (a little memory stick you can buy anywhere and that you stick into the USB outlet on the back of the keyboard). But once you have saved it on the USB flash drive, you cannot take that saved file and play your song on a computer . . . you can only play it on the keyboard itself. In other words, you are just saving it for future use on the keyboard itself. Hope this answers your question.
A work around that I use to avoid the cut off is shown in my video "Yamaha MOXF" How to Switch Voices Quickly in Live Performance" but this only works with "Voices" - not performances - because I'm just using the "song mode" mixing window. In this mode, the original voice will keep holding until you release your finger, even though you have already selected the next voice. There might be another way to allow for a smooth transition (without the break in sound) in Master Mode, but I don't know it (yet). If I find out, I'll let you know.
Hi rayan, I see no way to fade one voice out while fading another voice in. In my opinion its always a hard cut, unfortunately. But please consider: I'm not an expert !
Thank you Cathy.... I don't know what I'd do without your wonderful, simple, clearly articulated videos. Thank you..
Thank you Cathy! You must be one of the last of a handfull of people with good how-to's on this Keyboard. Appreciate it!
You're very welcome!

Does it allows a smooth transition? Or there is a cut between the changing?
There is a cut between.
