I've got mine all hooked up to the net .. I've been playing my old Speccy game collection via the archive .. I'm pleased and blessed with my accelerated Speccy NEXT
Thanks for showing our demo of TX-1696! Don't forget you can choose your pickup when you get the (?) - extra speed is very much needed as a pickup so get that to help. Enjoy
I had a ZX Spectrum when it was a thing but I only saw a fraction of these games. I got a lot more mileage out of setups like the Commodore128 and then even more with the Amiga. IBM Elf came with easier access to software but it all had a LONG way to go. We've come soo far. I'd be proud to own one of these.
I got mine two weeks ago; I opened the box, gave it a look, and put it back into it to never think about it again; it was soooo long ago that I backed the project that I feel that I have moved on from it. I feel that I've spent £400 on something I am not interested in today. Not ranting, just sharing how of a "meh" project it has become to me.
I can’t believe that several months after this video was released, no one has commented on the “Tape cutting error…” in the Sinclair font, on the delivery packaging (at 1:45 on the video) I still have an original ZX Spectrum 48k that I purchased second-hand in my late teens (around 1988/1989) with numerous games on tape. I also have a floppy disk controller for it (I think it’s the Disciple). I bought Speccy as a bit of a novelty for playing games when the 48k had pretty much reached end of life. I had already owned a Tandy TRS-80 Model II, BBC Micro, Atari ST and had an IBM AT clone by then! Last time I dug out the Speccy (perhaps 6-7 years ago) it was still working. It’s probably time to sell it; I doubt I’ll bother firing it up again. I try a Speccy emulator every couple of years, but the nostalgia soon wears off. The excitement of computing in the 80s stays with me though; what an amazing time that was, and it set me up with a career that I have always enjoyed.
You don't need to pull out the larger SD card converter if your PC has a nano SD card slot :). The nano SD card will come out on it's own and it's a lot easier!
Kids these days wiull NEVER experience the wonder of powering up a ZX Spectrum, then loading (if you were lucky) a game. Sure the BBC was better, but the Spectrum was next level.
You should also look at Polish awesome ZX Spectrum Neo built in 2023 as a ZX Spectrum with original processor and AY and other mods. It's brilliant ❤️❤️❤️
I think it was strider 1 or was it 2? One of them but then it was over 20 years ago since I last actually played on the system. Last game was jet set willy if I remember right. Problem is to my spectrum and my massive collection of games are at my mother's... So no to going and picking that up any time soon haha
The games included don't have that retro feel to me, they look way better than spectrum games that were made back in the days, the colours and details are way too vibrant. Give me that pure 80s jank any day
Got mine still sealed just been too ill to set it up at the moment 😢. Like you I missed K1 campaign... so backed K2. I play using emulation these days but much rather have this. When my treatment finishes in mid January I'll be enjoying messing with this. Maybe I'll finally beat Bugaboo the flea 😂
@BertGrink thank you.. I'm very sick from chemoradiation treatment its knocked the shit out of me... I hope to be up to it in late January I'm just too ill at the moment...
Nice video :) Just got my ZX Next a couple days ago, pretty impressed with the quality! Do you know if it's possible to connect both a PS2 keyboard and mouse (with some sort of splitter cable)? Or just one, no matter how you approach it?
Too late via Kickstarter, some have made their way to eBay, albeit at an inflated price. The N-GO is a clone that you might like that is available from various online suppliers.
It’s really targeted towards programmers. And hopefully they’ll try porting their games to the standard 128k or 48k machines. It’s way too expensive and limited in availability to be as popular as the original machines, albeit the NGO shows portable Nexts could be a good thing and might become more common and progressively cheaper. As things stand, though, the Next, is a niche product.
@@manni1998 for now i only could run ZEsarUX-X - weird aspect ratio (2x1) and hangs when asking for sd card (?) - (about other emulators: i'm a gnu/linux user (ubuntu 23.10) - do we need to compile sources, or run ms-windows binaries on wine? :S )
@@manni1998: I couldn't find any, which supports the KS2 version. I tried the latest CSpect and ZEsarUX, none of them could handle the image created from my SD card (the downloadable SD card images are older). Even the very first chapter of the manual contains a lot of new features of the NEXT BASIC, and for me it would be simpler to check them out in an emulator. Can you maybe recommend a working one?
@@nitrofurano_ I tested one emulator on my Mac. In my mind is, that it worked out of the box. I can‘t name the emulator because i‘m not at home. Sorry. A review of something ‘new’ but we can no longer buy. It’s a bit like Jim Bowen at the end of Bullseye when there is another pair of rubbish darts players.
Nostalgia of our childhood days. These days, I get my 8-bit fix via MiSTer FPGA which has excellent cores for almost all vintage home microcomputers from Commodore, Sinclair, Acorn/BBC, Amstrad and Atari, as well as a working Spectrum Next core. I do intend to buy the ZX Next and a Mega65 once the platforms mature, just to support these kinds of passion projects.

Incredible detailed video! I stoped to read every single screenshot 😛. Grettings from Argentina.

I got mine a week ago but not opened it….going to get my wife to wrap it for me for Christmas Day …..full nostalgia trip
So did I. => Maybe 40 years after getting my 48k in 1983 there may be a wonderful Christmas present this year... ;-)
Mine arrived right on my bday, the 11th, so I treated it as bday present and opened it at once :D

Oh no 😢 There is a market for them if you don’t want to keep it, some are going with quite a markup on eBay. Or keep for a rainy day 👍🏼
Yeah just sell it, many others will take it and you might even make a profit.

Impressed!! the old speccy always brings me nostalgia. great review :)
Nice vid, I have an N-Go but would love to own a speccy next eventually ❤
That's a nice bit of kit. Thanks for showing it to us!
Thanks for showing Dougie Do, much appreciated👍
It is so beautiful, I almost feel it's worth it just for that
omg!!!!! Spectrum 48k and sanyo slim 11 and a kemptson joystick lol my first computer... yes jealous lol
When can we use a quad core pi zero as the accelerator what about an art package and what about the pi zero emulating the vdp9990 at least?

Try Starglider, or Carrier Command. Carrier Command was one of the best Spectrum games ever made and was great on the Plus Two Spectrum.
Finally after almost 40 years, the Speccy is better than The Amiga ! 🙂
This might be a stupid question. How does one know when a kickstarter 3 for example starts?
For KS2 I followed as much Spectrum Next social media as I could.
Kids these days wiull NEVER experience the wonder of powering up a ZX Spectrum, then loading (if you were lucky) a game. Sure the BBC was better, but the Spectrum was next level.
I would absolutely love this
How long until the next batch of Next's?
- will there be a KS3?
Not sure if they will or not. In the mean time, there are some on eBay or the N-GO is an option, it’s a clone.

Can you attach a physical floppy disk drive to it ?
Good question, sort answer is I don't know 😢
Would a mega drive pad work? I know a joystick is ideal but would it?
Mega Drive pads will work on it.
I still have my zx spectrum +. Not hooked it up in over a decade tho.
Time to just it off and have a play 👍🏼😁 what’s your go to game?

Is there a way to get a backup from the kickstarter 2 sd-card?
Not officially. Owners are recommended to take a copy/backup of their SD card before using.

spectrum next is only lacking a decent emulator
There are at least five emulators.
The are easy to find on the spectrum next wiki page.
