    Thanks for this man. I'm still a little on the fence about which way to go when it comes to a reliable Specky machine, but you've more or less helped me to make up my mind. To be honest with the DivMMC ready installed it's a no brainer. Great review by the way ;)

    Thanks for the unflinchingly honest review, Jase. The board itself looks decent enough and the bang:buck ratio is very attractive but if (probably more like when) I get myself a ZX Omni, I'll order it in parts so I can butcher the case myself instead of getting it pre-butchered. 😆The extra 3D printed parts are cool, though. You should sell those as an accessory pack.

    In the dragon game with the tail, you're supposed to let the tail get hit and use it as a shield. Like go around in a circle so that the tail is in front of your face and it should protect you from bullets.

    I bought one a few years ago, my first computer was a Timex Sinclair 1000 and I always wanted a spectrum but they were not available in the US. It's a wonderful machine, I got the little screen for it as SCART isn't available here. I don't know about the new version but I would recommend the omni as long as you can wait (mine took 9 months to arrive) as I believe they are assembled by a single guy.

    I've got an Omni and love it very much, in fact I hope to have a second one soon, the Mk4 or V4 Omni has some advantages over the early model I currently own. I very much agree though that a decent manual would certainly be useful and helpful.

    If I didn't already have a Next, this would be tempting, especially with the Jupiter Ace compatibility. Still, if I were to get a Spectrum now, it'd have to be a Harlequin, but those are a pain to get these days.

    I've a few Spectrum at home but as they age (well indeed), I'm looking for a recreated version.
    I did with the C64 and the C64 maxi is a great machine.
    I visited the ZX renew website and it looks if not dead but at least not really maintained, last message to say owner are on holidays till 3r July 2023 ...
    As I want to have a machine to keep and update, i'm a little bit reluctant to buy and also because all they sell is pre-owned.
    It's clear this machine is not fully finished and still needs updates/upgrades and if the website is nearly dead.
    It's nice to redo what Sinclair did, but for the Spectrum, don't copy the QL, releasing a not fully working prototype.

    Great video! Bought one myself after seeing this - may be the cheapest way to get a 128k spectrum these days!
    It arrived much quicker than I expected - just a few weeks, and was well-packed, came with a SCART cable (looks the same as a Sega Genesis 2&3 but haven't tested that yet) and power supply.
    Bummer that the 128K basic is incompatible with the DivMMC, but there's a patch for that I'll try flashing to the EPROM once I get the PLCC adapter for my TL866 clone 🙂
    Disappointed with the keyboard though; wasn't expecting much, but I actually think the genuine 48k's keyboard is better!
    REALLY appreciate the heads-up on the long-filename file browser!

    I thought I heard somewhere that a new batch of Next units were coming out next year, maybe I misread that. How did you arrange the sound from the games when you were demonstrating them? it's interesting to hear that the sounds and music were in stereo. Hopefully the team behind this unit will improve it over time.

      The Issue 2 Spectrum Next Kickstarter was in 2020, but the component shortage has taken its toll. The developers had to port the core over to a new FPGA as the one used in the Issue 1 is no longer available. AFAIK the only thing holding up the Issue 2 Next is said FPGAs, which have an expected delivery date of mid 2023. Issue 1 Nexts go for AUD $1,000+ on eBay, so you'd have to be keen. Or you could put in an order for an N-GO (Spectrum Next compatible) for less than half the price, but there's a bit of a wait on those too.

    I think you might really like getting a Mister FPGA rig. It has a complect Spectrum Next core and a huge number of other 8 and 16 bit systems and though it is a bit pricy to get a full system setup it is still the best bang for your buck I can think of. It runs so many consoles PCs and Arcade systems that it boggles the mind. Mine cost about $400 all together and it is just amazing how much it can do. Most of the cores include many of the enhanced upgrades of each system. The development community is really amazing and you will find updates almost every week that make things better.

    I can recommend the games Buzzsaw (like Pac Attack) and Ooze, a platform puzzler. 2 modern games.
    When you are on the highest platform in Manic Miner, you need to jump the second part much earlier than it seems. The later levels are much harder. If you can save your progress, I suggest you do so.

  • @SophieFeet
    @SophieFeet 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    With TAP games that don't load, sometimes it's because they're 128K versions that rely on the interrupt routine on the 128k version of the BASIC ROM to do memory paging. Other things (like Atic Atac, Jet Pac and other earlier Ultimate titles) need memory paging disabled before loading. Use OUT 32765,48 before hitting the NMI button (you refer to it as the divMMC button) and selecting the game. Finally, you mentioned you couldn't get the +3e ROM working - this is probably because you'd need an SD card formatted by +3DOS rather than FAT.

      @@brianv2871The ZX Spectrum was the first home computer you could afford with enough RAM to do complex stuff.
      It's launch preceded that of the C64 by more than half a year.
      And it was NEVER meant to be a games machine. Sir Clive (RIP) was very unhappy about the Speccy starting a games industry in England.
      I wrote my first complex program about Latin verb grammer exercises on it.
      The simplicity of the ZX Spectrum's hardware made it the most cloned system of its time, especially in Eastern Europe. More than 80 clone versions exist(ed) and nobody knows just how many Spectrum compatibles were (and are) produced.

    I've looked into these "modern" clones myself and found the whole subject very confusing. The Spectrum Next is a great piece of hardware designed by all the best people, but as you also very rightfully said so, a bit out of reach. The N-Go is something I could never understand fully, it seems to be "the poor man's Next" since it is able (?) to run the "Next Core" (whatever that is) but I really don't know what that brings to the table, and whether I want those things or not. Omni, as you have reviewed very well here, seems to be a "near exact" 128K clone made with modern components, and a few very known modern Spectrum add-ons implemented on the board. But, and that is a big but, I don't like the idea of having multiple FPGAs running the show. I am a retro 8bit fan and having electronics beyond my understanding (and capability) in my "retro computer" really bugs me. I also don't like the idea of software trying to emulate hardware. If one of those decides to die, there isn't much I can do to fix it. That takes the fun out of it big time for me. So, as a result I went for Superfo's Harlequin 128 issue 4A. Everything in it is within my technical knowledge, there are no "hidden super computers" in there that emulate real hardware. Everything is close to the original thing (or should I say almost period correct) as can be. So far, I couldn't find anything (hardware of software) that refused to work with it, and/or caused any incompatibilities. True, you need some spare time to build it, took me 6 months to collect everything needed literally from many corners of the world. Built it in 3 days, and have been enjoying it very much along with my real Spectrums.

    • @robm8809
      @robm8809 ปีที่แล้ว

      The N-Go is a licensed clone of the Next, and is 100% compatible. I have a Next and like it very much but I am thinking of getting an N-Go. The N-Go is even better in some ways, such as I get some interference on the sound on my V1 Next as they Wifi module is close to the sounds module on the board, whereas the N-Go solves that problem. I have a Laptop Omni as well and also love that. :)
