Just for some background - JK started as a trainee at the age of 13, BTS debuted when he was 15 and by the age of 20 he/they were selling out stadiums around the world (including 2 shows at Wembley, Saudia Arabia, Rose Bowl, etc)...it's not only that he (and BTS) are "promising", he/they dominate. JKs song, Seven, was the fastest song to gain 1billion streams on sp0t1fy last year, and he has a Hot 100 #1, topped the Global 200 chart and had multiple songs in the top 10 of the Hot 100 at the same time. As an 11 year veteran in the industry he's moved past being promising. Not to sound snarky, I know you meant it as a compliment, but thought you should now.

71 year old BTS Army here. You are already aware that Jungkook or JK for short is the main vocalist for the Global phenomenon BTS. BTS was recently named as the "Most Streamed Group of All Time".
This song is considered retro disco "Funk" or just retro "Funk" - late 1970s-'80s. His label announced this track as a subtle homage to MJ. Can I ask why it is so important for you to make sure to say JK’s solo stuff has NOTHING to do with KPop? I’m curious about it because you make a really big point about it on everyone’s reactions. It confuses me that it’s so important to point that out when he has won awards from KPop Awards shows, he has said he was aware and proud of being a KPOP Idol when he was making his album. Are you suggesting he doesn’t deserve those awards? Should his own industry turn their backs on him because he dared to use American people and sing in English? Your analogy ignores one very key and important point. JK IS a KPOP idol. One of the most successful and ever. Kpoppers are continuously trying to keep him in the Kpop box and he has achieved his "giant pop star" dream by using top American writers and producers to do it. I believe that none of the people involved with his solo career were doing it to further his Kpop career. JK wanted more. They were writing and producing American Pop music for JK. It always surprises me a bit when people can’t hear what is live vocals and what isn’t. I mean you can literally hear him breathing into the mic. You can clearly hear him over the backing track. If you want to check a BtS performance with no backing track at all I recommend the live performance of Film out from Music blood. It’s really good and all about vocals, no dancing.

Just because you have a live band doesn’t mean you can’t have vocal tracks accompanying. Also your opinion on his voice is your opinion but you’re the first person to say what you said. Professional singers and voice coaches have all said he is amazing and he has perfect pitch. Not many artists sing live anymore so it’s hard to tell how their voices really are.
BTS members are all in the military at the moment for their mandatory enlistment. Will only reunite after June 2025.
Before enlistment, all members have been releasing solo projects. Standing next to you is the title track of his solo album, Golden.
This song has full choreo with backing dancers but not in this performance, try watch the Jimmy Fallon show or the times square performance. It's a homage to MJ, you can see more in the full choreo performance.

Most of bts songs have crazy dance choreos so of course theyre using backing tracks in their performances, but they always sing live and also have live band on tours. The backing tracks become a bit louder when the choreos get intense, mostly at transitions or dance breaks. Tbh one thing they cant do well is lipsync so they're not even pretending to sing when theyre not. The audiences/fans also one of the most important thing for them, most of their songs have so many call and response parts where the audiences have our own parts, we also have fan chants for every song and using the backing tracks as kinda cues.
Anw there are lots of accoustic performance from them too that you can watch, theyre full on singing mode when theyre not dancing. The most recent ones with the minimal or almost no backing tracks are their proof live performance, tiny desk performance and some live lounges. Thanks for this reaction. This was promoted as a partial homage to MJ, who was an inspiration. He was definitely singing live. You can tell when he was singing and when he wasn’t. Try watching again and you can tell. Those of us who know him can easily tell when he is singing. They DO NOT Lip sync. There are videos by Mr Removed where it shows only his live vocals. You should watch it if you are not convinced 😊. Rolling Stone has Jungkook on their list of 200 greatest singers of all-time (The only Asian). The backing track is all him. He did the whole album in English even though he is not fluent in English. He can and has written songs. He is the only vocalist in the group that is a full fledge member of the Korean Music Copywrite Association. I expect the others to be members soon. All of the rappers are BTS’s main song writers. Listen to his live for the song “Hate You” he sang on iHeart, too. His song, “Seven” is the fastest song in history to get 1 Billion streams.

That's because he did his own backing vocals as well so they are pre recorded as he can't sing both at the same time. The band is following the clicks so they are playing live while the Jungkook's own pre recorded backing vocal are heard while he sings the melody over the top.
I've done the same thing before as a vocalist and I must say the first time felt weird while I was singing the melody my could also hear my own backing vocals along with melody I'm singing. I've also done it the other way around a melody line I've pre recorded then adlib over the top live on stage.

His voice is just like the recording but his voice is much better live than the recording. He is also singing his own background, aldib, harmonize his own song. His voice is also stable in singing live while dancing, running, jumping, flying in Zipline ( euphoria live performance) because his singing while running in a treadmill.
Jungkook sings live. I do understand that it’s hard to tell for new listeners because, first, he has an absolute pitch that allows him to stay on tune and match his own background vocals, if any playing. And second, his singing voice has a kind of auto tune effect qualities which adds to better sound of the performance.
There are a lot of videos of him singing acapella one of his or BTS’s songs. And if you combine his pure vocals with a backtrack it sounds like a studio version. With such abilities he has no issues with singing live and even have a strong preference of doing so.
BTS tend to use a live band when they are on stage both as a group and as solo members. They are all musicians themselves so they prefer a live band and occassionaly a member will also play with the live band. Guitar or piano.

Of course he's singing live. Nowdays everyone who does live performances, uses live musicians, sings and backing tracks. Jungkook creates his own backing tracks.
Jungkook is young, but not new. He's been in the business for 13 years, and performing in front of audiences for over 11 years. He only speaks a tiny bit of English, so his solo debut album, Golden, was his way to challenge himself. Golden has multiple genres, all sung in English, using Western producers and songwriters exclusively. As the main vocalist for BTS, he does most of the finish work (ad-libs, harmonies, vocal runs, etc.) for their songs. So the backtrack is all him, which allows him to not need background singers. He was singing live and has no need for autotune. You'll see why as you learn more about him.
Now others will want you to check out the group next, but there is a lot more Jungkook to discover. If you want songs in Korean, check out Still With You or Stay Alive. If you want R&B go with Euphoria (Wimbley live) or My Time, but his album, Golden, is a true masterpiece, and more impressive because he did all the songs in a language he barely speaks. Give him a chance to show you his talent before you move on to someone else please.
One warning, some may be offended by your reaction, believing you think JK is only slightly better than other artist. If that happens, just admit you may have been hasty and will listen to more of his music to get a true idea of who he is artistically. He's a rockstar, but he will go beyond that once he gains more experience as a solo artist. Groups are a double edged sword for a breakout member.
He’s not a solo artist. None of the members are. They are a group, in name as “jk of BTS”, in contract that they all signed again, and in their hearts bc they are brothers, they are just doing solo projects. And what is wrong with people asking him to check BTS as a group instead of more of jk solo work???? He still shines and gets his moments to show his talents in the group. The group raised him and is his family, they are not and have never been a hindrance to him, if you actually cared abt him you’d listen to his own words abt being a BTS member. He'll let you know if he isn't singing live. All BTS members train very hard so they can sing while dancing. He and the other BTS members are Michael fans and honor his music in many songs. You should watch the performance of this song that he and Usher did together.

Jungkook has been performing over 10 years already he is amazing live and this performance was an example of that if you still couldn't even differentiate between a backing track and live vocals. I haven't seen any "professional musician" who couldn't tell except you. He isn't a rock star who only sings in a mic, he's a performer where he has to move around a lot while singing anyone who knows how performances are run would know that a backing track is a must but it doesn't take over the live vocals, it's a support and makes the performance more complete.

JK, with BTS, have done an amazing job of spreading Korean culture, language and history throughout the world. He is currently serving his mandatory military service in South Korea, along with his other 6 members. They timed it so that they will all be back in June 2025. They plan a world tour at that point. It will be massive. JK is the main vocalist and youngest member of BTS, he joined when he was 13 or 14. All members are in the age ranges of 26 to 31 currently. Most of BTS's music is written, composed, produced by themselves and usually done in Korean or a mix of Korean with a little English. They also have 3 all English songs. Prior to entering the military most of the members did solo albums. JK chose to do an all English album. BTS has always done solo music as well as the group music - it's one of the many unique things about them and one of the reasons they choose to stay together. No ones creativity is stifled in this group.
Having a back track is quite normal. Even other Western artists are using back tracks for live performances. You can easily tell when is live vocal and when is back track. He doesn’t keep the micro phone next to his mouth when he doesn’t sing. Standing Next To You is a masterpiece.

There is a thing called back tracks. And it's pretty obvious when he sings live if you compare it to the back tracks. Also, of course the back tracks voice is gonna sound like him, because that is his voice. Jungkook records most if not all of his background voices himself. Depends on whether he is on the song himself or other members of BTS are on the song as well. And no BTS didn't disband or anything. They are currently doing their military service. Two of the BTS member will be coming back this year, the first already coming in about two weeks. They will all be back next year. For now we have some solo stuff of them, but once they are back they will be back as a whole again. And this song is a homage to Michael Jackson, so of course anyone who knows and loves Michael Jackson should see and hear it.
