- I Bought this E34 535ia with engine damage without knowing the exact problem. I expected to see a blown head gasket or in a bad case a cracked cylinder head. Worst case would be a broken engine block but since the M30 blocks are known as 'indestructable', that wouldn't be the case...
The biggest challenge was the engine damage, furthermore some esthetical work and some technical problems to solve.
Since my daily car is an E34 535i as well (for 5 years atm), I have worked more on E34's and the M30B35 engine.

Beautiful car, I said goodbye to my 1988 E34 535i sprot auto back in 2003 when I part exchanged it at a BMW dealership for a 1998 E39 540i steptronic auto (4.4 non vanos), I wish I had kept my E34 now as the M30 B34 (3.4 3430cc) was a brilliant and super smooth straight 6 engine - The V8 M62 B44 engine (4.4 4398cc) was a complete nightmare and kept eating coil packs, MAF's and breaking intake valves when it used to randomly missfire/backfire ! - I now switched over to a 2010 M156 Mercedes W212 6.2 (E63 AMG) and that has been a brilliant car for the last 3 years I've had it... But I still love and miss my old E34 535I ! - Timeless design of 1987 ! 👌

Buying a second car that you're familiar with is actually a good move.
You get to keep spare parts for maintenance/repair for both.

Very nice. I have the M50b25 in the same colour. I'm determined to rebuild my car. The previous owner would rarely drive her so it has very low Kms. However he neglected basic maintenance so it needs replacement front struts, control arms, Coolant lines, vacuum lines, Idle Control Valve needs a good clean. The previous owner never gave the car an oil change according to him. I Want to stroke the motor to get maximum performance out of her. I love driving my E34.

I checked the engine as good as possible while purchase and afterwards, I replaced some parts preventive.
Camshaft and the internal of the cylinder head in general looked fine, timing was still okay, timing guides looked fine, did a valve adjustment, all new fluids and filters, spark plugs,...
Afterwards I measured the compression and this was fine as well.
Normally, these engines can last way longer than 230.000 km. My daily 535i has 280.000 km's with first distribution, piston rings, crankshaft bearings..
Great result, almost rustfree🙂my 88 has some rust. The 3.5 is good enough for me, much cheaper than an m5.

I have a question regarding coolant system pressure, i see you've measured it yourself on 4:40 in this video.
Would you mind sharing a result of a cooling system pressure test with engine fully warmed up?
I've changed head gasket and got some cylinder head work done on my 635CSi, but after assembling everything, the upper radiator hose still seems just a little hard to squeeze when engine is fully warmed up.

I Didn't test coolant system on fully warmed up engine. But it should be the same? If not measuring for too long.
Advantage is the some leaks are only measurable when engine is warmed up.

Hmm, Test with fully warmed up engine should be the same?! Just stay on pressure.
Difference is that some defects only will start to leak when warmed up and expanded.
If hoses are getting hard, that means there is still air in the system..
@@muisphil Hi, I'm very late to respond, sorry for that. Everything worked out well in the end, everything was bled properly and after a lot more engine work the 635CSI is back on the road after all those years - where it belongs.

You would be surpised when driving and E34 535i with the automatic transmission! Perfect cruise machine.
But this one is sold in meantime and wasn't a project anymore. :-)
@@muisphil automatics do make for excellent cruise machines, especially if they have steptronic (I have an e39 528iA). I'll probably be moving to Belgium this year so I'm currently not looking for a project car anymore, as I have way to much papers to sort through and things to sort out. And besides, if I were to buy a project car, it would be a German car and I don't want to import a German car to the Netherlands, and then export it a couple of weeks later into Belgium... Maybe later this year I can get an e21 or something...
