Yeah, the example that made me realize this was Giotto. It was absolutely brutalized by Halley, despite being pretty far away and having Whipple dust shields built in. This is not a mechanic in KSP, I just simulated it with object thrower. Realistically, the particles hitting Halfire would be much slower (since the comet and probe start out at the same velocity), but the bigger chunks breaking off from time to time would be what destroys it.
