+Sara Huang Then just buy some? ThinkGeek used to have them, I got some for a friend of mine and she even made some custom ears for them. www.necomimi.com/
Poor Joy. She's lucky to have such a great home, but she's still been through a lot. For those of you don't know she had some pretty terrible owners before she ended up with Jessi. Check out Animal Wonders' channel. They're fantastic.
Most interesting part of this episode was watching how Hanks ears reacted to different things. For example the first time they really reacted was when the brainlady laughed for the first time.
+Bob Hope I have an eclectus parrot, it once bit through my nail, through the flesh behind that, and then scraped the bone on its way past. 2/10 - would not recommend.
THEfogVAULT You're lucky you still have your finger. And eclectus parrots are on the small side in comparison to Macaws. Imagine what damage a full sized cockatoo can do to your hand.
Something to clarify: it sounds like the Flathead Indians can't be around body parts (presumably for religious reasons), but Native tribes don't all have the same cultures. For example, my tribe (Siletz, from Southwestern Oregon/Northwestern California) don't have any problems with body parts as far as I'm aware. We're different tribes for a reason: we're different people. :)
The ears headset is so cool! Is there *any* way to buy a pair? I would *love* to own one :D Great guest! Thank you Dr. Amanda Duley for coming to the talk show!
Wow, I never thought that I could watch a 21mn long video. I guess it is possible only when it is SciShow. Interesting conversation and great people. Thanks :)
One of my favorite things about these videos is that I get to see Hank just be amazed by something :) because I'm so used to Hank being the one who knows just about everything and it's just sort of wonderful to see him be in that state of wonder about something. I think that's just kind of a beautiful thing for humanity as a whole, to experience that wonder and curiosity because there's no way for any of us to ever know everything however much we may try :)
I know this is weird, but since I can't afford to donate to patreon, I just want to thank Justin Ove, Justin Lentz, David Campos, Chris Peters, Philippe von Bergen, Fatima Iqbal, John Murrin, Linnea Boyev, and Kathy & Tim Philip for donating. We appreciate you!!!!
Hank wearing the Necomimi ears was both adorable and fascinating. It was really cool getting a peek into what he was thinking during the interview by reading the ears. The little ear twitches, always it seemed to be on the right ear, were hilarious. I would love to see Necomimi ears become a common thing in interviews. It adds a whole new dimension.
The ears are called Nekomimis, just google that if you want to find them, they run about $75 US, about £50, and they tend to burn out after about three months. They're heavier than they look, the motors are very delicate, but they are a lot of fun to wear.
Reason for the cow olfactory bulb being so large: cows rely on scent to identify other cows in their herd! Especially for mama cows who are constantly keeping tabs on their baby, that makes it very useful :)
"We did dress up as zombies! I don"t know if you saw us walking around acting like zombies." Something I wouldn't even think twice about in Missoula, tbh. I love this town XD
When they rotate up, his brain cells are firing, meaning he is trying to comprehend, sort, and file the information that he is observing. When the ears are facing down, he is approaching "reality show" brain level activity. Tootles!
This was so cool! I noticed that after a few minutes of Hank wearing the ears it stopped looking odd to me. I wonder if that is like the way you ignore an odor after a few minutes. Freaky, I love me some brains. PS: I also love Jessi's full name. I don't know why exactly, but it seems like the name a protagonist would have in a Robert Heinlein book.
I actually have a pair of Nekomimi, but I lost the foam bases for the ear sleeves so I can't wear the ears anymore. Plus they take up a lot of battery life.
I have a neighbor (Johnny) in his 50s and he has a pet macaw (Toby), they grew up together from childhood. It's pretty cool how they "get along". It seems like they can read each other's body language.
So many brains. I can't be the only one hearing the theme from thebrainscoop in my head right now. Especially when Dr. Duley talked about the flicker brain and how it was donated ... "Heard you wanted some brains, here's one that got hit by a car"
@16:20 Yoo hoo! Don't forget us red-butted African Grey Parrots. We are in the Psittacine family, too. Hello, beautiful Joy. I'd be nervous, too, around a guy who has cat ears one minute... and no cat ears the next!
I got to wear those cat ears thing once, courtesy to TeamLab Japan. Those things are fun for a while but then it gets really distracting; hard to get anything done wearing those. But yeah, *FUN!*
Nekomimi work based on muscle relaxation/contraction and pulse, not by actually reading brain waves. This isn't to say they don't correspond to people's state of mind, just that they rely on how the muscles in the the head move rather than reading your mind. They're still pretty cool.
I feel like I was watching two people on a first date slowly get comfortable with each other when he was talking with Amanda. lol So much awkward laughing, but it still seemed like they were both having a good time.
Is Jessi implying that Joy is more intelligent because she is left handed or that the presence of handedness in a species makes the species more intelligent? Is handedness and intelligence even related?
If handedness in a species relates to intelligence, I'd like to know in what way and how is it measured. Is handedness a property that appears only in relatively intelligent species? Do all dolphins have flipper "handedness"? Or do handedness vary within a genus, say macaws, and only certain species of macaws show handedness and are more intelligent.
+GuyWithAnAmazingHat given her explanation, I think it's just a sign of more complex problem solving and stuff. Handedness gives the impression that an animal is using one hemisphere of the brain for one thing, which implies being capable of more complex multitasking, allocating certain mental resources to one thing while still able to do other things implies the animal is potentially capable of doing some complex multi-tasking and problem solving.
+GuyWithAnAmazingHat I'm pretty sure it's the latter. I guess the idea is that our having "handedness" (in quotes because not all species have hands) indicates that one side of the brain is used for the main task, and the other is used for extra, less important tasks (as opposed to having so little brain power that you use all 100% of it for everything you do). I'd say by that logic having more than two sides of the brain makes you even more intelligent (maybe octopuses could be four times more intelligent than us. :/ ).
The ears make me think of using them as a tool for helping people with social disorders by having the sensor connected to something that helps others recognize the mood of the individual wearing them. Then I thought that this would be a great technology for social robots, which would have a lot of trouble detecting non-verbal signals in conversation but if you were wearing one of these your mood could be transmitted directly to the robot so that they can respond with the appropriate social signal.

Those ears should be standard for this show for all people on it.
Hank: *Confused face* *Twitchy ears*

12:06 I LOVE the cat ears when he rants about operation, you can just see them go down and stay down
OMG MY HEART JUST CANT HANDLE THE CUTENESS OF THE CAT EARS OMG THEY ARE SO CUTEEEEEEEE!
Ermahgod
+Sara Huang Then just buy some? ThinkGeek used to have them, I got some for a friend of mine and she even made some custom ears for them. www.necomimi.com/
Neko ears op :3
They need to do an episode on the brain chemistry of anime fans.
Poor Joy. She's lucky to have such a great home, but she's still been through a lot.
For those of you don't know she had some pretty terrible owners before she ended up with Jessi. Check out Animal Wonders' channel. They're fantastic.
I came for the cat ears
I did too.
10:10 what she says mixed with her expression mixed with the ears reacting was absolutely priceless.
10:10 -- "Can I get the brain out?" she says. And Hank's ears go, "WTF?!"
Definitely my favourite SciShow talk so everrrrr. All the brain/neuro amazingness had me entranced. My "ears" were all oVER THE PLACE!!! :D :D
Today on SciShow talk show, Hank stacks a number of unwieldy objects on his head for our entertainment.
I want a gif of Hank's ears perking up and then he says "Fricken kids"
Most interesting part of this episode was watching how Hanks ears reacted to different things. For example the first time they really reacted was when the brainlady laughed for the first time.
"I was trying to make myself feel angry by reading comments on Tumblr but everyone was nice unfortunately"
lol
Thanks Hank, it's been lovely time.
I absolutely loved this episode. I wish I had the time to travel over and see the Brain Lab - it's all so fascinating.
the guy with glasses is awesome, and funny, loving the videos by scishow, they are so interesting
+Radar Palace Guy - Hank Green ;)
Let us take a moment to appreciate Hank wearing both the ears and the googles
Omg I love the ears! So cute! ^w^
I can see in your profile picture why you came to this video
Ah cool! I used to volunteer at spectrUM.
+Kickass!dy Awesome!
Thank you guys for putting this together! This was fascinating!
This was a lot of fun to watch, thank you for posting this!
+Eefje Poppelaars I have been watching SciShow videos all day. Best thing I have ever done!
I love parrot tongues, they're so cool!
+GibJen McHorse Kinky, but I'd be scared of it trying to crack the nut. That beak looked like it had some power behind it.
+Bob Hope haha, get that naughty mind out of here, I'm mean it in a purely scientific manner! hehe
+Bob Hope They can snap broomsticks in half with their beaks. Crazy powerful.

great how jesse read that joy had enough, great listening and feeling and RESPECTING the animal, love it whenever she drops by.

Hank should do more videos with the ears on
10:11 haha them ears turning in a moment of confusion

10:11 best ears and face expresion synchronization
Every one of these videos have super interesting guests. Thumbs up
OVER 3 Millions SUBS!! :) great work scishow!
10:10 is literally the funniest thing ever
+egalomon Haha! Those ears turning, with that facial expression! Priceless!
Joy is a sweetheart.
Definitely the most interesting talk show episode ever.
I have a pair of these ears, so I had to watch Hank wear them! They are so interesting to me and my friends.
I can't deal with Hank's cute twitchy ears! x3
Honestly "The Drunk Upside Down Operation Challenge" is something Grace would be all for. And I would watch the hell out of it!
The ears are called Nekomimis, just google that if you want to find them, they run about $75 US, about £50, and they tend to burn out after about three months. They're heavier than they look, the motors are very delicate, but they are a lot of fun to wear.
wow, a macaw bonded to a human. So beautiful..
omg. at last. new scitalk. I am EXCITED...
Great show!!!
I've been on a SciShow Talk Show binge and I'm just realizing that Jessi is in many monogamist relationships lol
I really want to try those goggles.
+swSephy | Sim Racing you can make it yourself. Just make a google that gives you inverted image.
+swSephy | Sim Racing Ikr!

You should add a link in the description to Jessi's TH-cam channel!
Aaah, the cat ears! I saw an ad for those years ago! Want them so badly
Love Hank. He’s a good sport.
"We did dress up as zombies! I don"t know if you saw us walking around acting like zombies." Something I wouldn't even think twice about in Missoula, tbh. I love this town XD
I actually own a pair of necomimis. It's super exciting to see hank wearing them in a video!
I never thought parrots could be this adorable ^^
Now I'm just watching the ears to try and read hanks mind, but I don't know what the movements mean.
When they rotate up, his brain cells are firing, meaning he is trying to comprehend, sort, and file the information that he is observing. When the ears are facing down, he is approaching "reality show" brain level activity. Tootles!
Wait wait wait wait IS THIS IN MISSOULA? Because I had no idea such cool sciencey things were happening in my little town! I want to go to this now!
How do trees survive winter? Are cells still working at a slower rate or do they stop completely?
I AM JUST EXCITED ABOUT THESE BRAINS AND SCIENCE AS HE IS! I absolutely love this type of science! 😂😄😍😝😋💖
This was so cool! I noticed that after a few minutes of Hank wearing the ears it stopped looking odd to me. I wonder if that is like the way you ignore an odor after a few minutes. I love this so much
Where do I get the Altered reality goggles?
And can I rotate it to be on different angles than just upside down?
I have a neighbor (Johnny) in his 50s and he has a pet macaw (Toby), they grew up together from childhood. It's pretty cool how they "get along". It seems like they can read each other's body language.
Those things look _so_ much better than those dumb mood ring things :D
favorite part at 15:25 when Hank says 'Freaking kids' and the ears turn upwards :D
What happened to the flower sprite on the table? It looks broken!
this is sosososo cool!!!!
So many brains. I can't be the only one hearing the theme from thebrainscoop in my head right now. Especially when Dr. Duley talked about the flicker brain and how it was donated ... "Heard you wanted some brains, here's one that got hit by a car"
Great episode! Those ears are awesome :-D
can u please do a video on the MCR 1 gene ?
Love the ears :D Totally want one for home :P
Came here from the Why don't humans have whiskers video. This was really cool!
Ride SmarterEveryDay's backwards brain bike while wearing these goggles! :D
+
Hanks ears just after she says "oh, can I get the brains out?" ... Hilarious!!
Random question and hopefully it hasn't been asked too many times before, but does anyone know where they film SciShow TalkShow?
@16:20 Yoo hoo! Don't forget us red-butted African Grey Parrots. We are in the Psittacine family, too. Hello, beautiful Joy. I'd be nervous, too, around a guy who has cat ears one minute... and no cat ears the next!

I would love it if the team could circle back with the scientists they interviewed over the years. Check in on their progress and new projects!
you guys should make a weekly live stream like sci Saturday
Hank your ears I can't even \O/
That is way too cute.
Where do you record these videos Hank?
Jessi u are sweet I love Ur job. So comforting the all the animals love you the dangers u handle it well.
Nekomimi work based on muscle relaxation/contraction and pulse, not by actually reading brain waves. This isn't to say they don't correspond to people's state of mind, just that they rely on how the muscles in the the head move rather than reading your mind. They're still pretty cool.
I got 3 right I love the laughter on between it all so makes me laugh that y o am sort of addted
I feel like I was watching two people on a first date slowly get comfortable with each other when he was talking with Amanda. lol So much awkward laughing, but it still seemed like they were both having a good time.
I have to get those cat ears for my gf. Failure is not an option.
Is Jessi implying that Joy is more intelligent because she is left handed or that the presence of handedness in a species makes the species more intelligent?
Is handedness and intelligence even related?
Kangaroos are mostly left handed
If handedness in a species relates to intelligence, I'd like to know in what way and how is it measured.
Is handedness a property that appears only in relatively intelligent species? Do all dolphins have flipper "handedness"?
Or do handedness vary within a genus, say macaws, and only certain species of macaws show handedness and are more intelligent.

+GuyWithAnAmazingHat It's handedness. Dedicating one part of the brain to fine motor skills frees up the other half for other things.

What a magnificent bird.
reminds me of Perth's Scitech - but waaaay cooler! Love those ears - I wonder how they'd react during an episode of Wheezy Waiter!? LOL
I LOOOOVE this episode xD
in case anyone's wondering it's 302... we also know c elegans connectome
The ears make me think of using them as a tool for helping people with social disorders by having the sensor connected to something that helps others recognize the mood of the individual wearing them.

I like that quick little reference.. "They think with meat"

Yes!!! Guesstimating! 16:10
@Lovescience
Where do I get some of these ears!?!?
Nekomimi! gatta love these things :3
hank is the cutest furry
he looks so cute in those ears :3
