I believe one of the main strengths of the frog technique lies in the legs as the kicking is devastating. Another strength is also that it uses some type of iron body techniques as the skin is also very difficult to pierce.
yeah it's true, what most of you think is mantis is actually leopard style, you can see by the way he's holding his hands during the form, especially the stances in the form. So it's frog, monkey, leopard and tai chi.
It's impressive, interesting how to see the styles. There individual movements are interesting, funny to look at but every movement got it's purpose. It's really impressive how they're able to keep in synch when they're in large groups performing.
The monks' conditioning is so exquisite that they can control their heart rate, breathing and chi. I'm sure they would annihilate 97% of their opponents in a street fight.
I suppose it's more in the fact that if they're agile enough to pull off those kinds of spins, leaps etc. then they've strength enough to do someone some serious damage - if they have to :)
like the fight between yi long and brad riddell I saw that monk yi long in that fight took a breather by just taking a number of punches to the face uneffected.
Actually, tai chi chuan is the basis for all the Kung Fu styles. The way you learn Kung Fu usually isn't learning how to hit and how to block individual attacks (though depending on the master it can be), but by memorising a tai chi chuan, meaning you kind of do learn a dance. That dance is also a way of focussing your chi and concentrating, but if you look closely the movements he does are actually defences and attacks. So actually when learnign kung fu you kinda get dancing lessons
@Dungarth You are right! Knowing as many fighting styles as you can is the best way to go, but going into the ring with the thought of "reaping the guy's head off" is not going to win you the fight. That's what classic martial arts masters, including Bruce Lee, tried to make people understand: a clear mind and relaxation are much more important. And that's what true Kung Fu practitioners focus on. Also, you forget that a nimble and trained Shaolin monk is much likely to adapt to most styles.
Actually in that show they did not fight monks, they were students of local martial arts schools near shaolin, some have up to 10,000 students and if you knew Chinese you heard one of the coaches saying the guys they fought were actually 17 and 18 years old
Monkey style appears to be the most... frustrating to go up against. I love all forms of kung fu and martial arts and fighting and defense in general, but Monkey and Druken just have this level of playfulness that speaks to me as "GOD DAMN IT STAND STILL!" Lol maybe that's be being silly. These men were all amazing! Frog made my knees ache from watching.
Yes, concentrating the Qi stored in their DanTian and releasing it through the meridian channels in their body. Still, hard qigong such as breakin bricks is also very physical. To break things with their heads, for example, the would stand on their heads for hours every day to harden their skulls.
I am no expert; I don't practice Kung Fu, but I do practice other martial arts and study the different philosophies, hoping to apply them. Although the laughing in the background did seem out-of-place, I think it shows that the man demonstrating the Monkey style was accomplishing what was intended in that the movements appear harmless and playful.
@MitsosSasuke exactly it is not easy to do as say, that is why it happens, people think that all they do its to run everywhere jumping and playing, but, is faster is harder than anything you have seen, you dont have to let him get near you, you just cant avoid it
What form or variation of Tai Chi is that last show? Not Yang-style, but looks a bit like Chen-style, because of the combinations of inner and outer movements and the marked circularity of the movements of his shoulders, although I have never seen a Chen form with those specific movements.
Nope, not flashy at all :p But still fascinating stuff, though... Would really like to learn XingYiQuan and some Tai Chi. Perhaps some Wing Chun too :)
@planetshakerxx i think animals are sheer power. their bodies are always if kept right pure muscle nd their killing stlye is often one of many intricate things each one does.
But dont forget, Shaolin did not start to practice martial arts as a body-strengthening training until way after the temple is established, and even then it didn't become main focus of the temple.
@Sorvos Personally i like gong fu most. Gong fu is one of the most sophistcated arts to be found (Also their technical application training. But sophistcated isnt always best. Instead one should keep it simple) There is a saying: "Sometimes less is more". "It is better to train 5-10 techniques 1000 times, then to train 1000 techniques 5-10 times." Those who put their main priority in simple technical combat training, are likely the most dangerous. Regardless their martial arts background.
@Dungarth I said most, not all, modern fighters, not necesarily mma fighters, but many mma fighters do fight just to beat someone up. Kung fu is a thousand year old art, so no matter how much you dislike it, it is the root of modern combat and should be respected as such. You didn't read carefully my last posts, when I said that it's not the body atributes that matter most. It's the clear mind and concentration on what you are doing that are more important. That's what kung fu is about.
@Sorvos well i would agree that a wrestler wouldnt see this guy coming, but a ufc fighter might, you have to think, in the ufc, certain moves and styles are prohibited, including kung fu cuz their moves are made to maim and kill, but that doesnt mean that some people havent studied it
@vyhulmidyck You are right about that forms in karate is called kata. But forms in wushu is not called quan/chuan (fist). The right term for forms in wushu is: Taolu! The word quan/chuan (fist) only indicate, that it is a martial art.
what they are doing here is forms, used to train the body and mind, there's a different training to fight, and there's fighting styles, search about "sanshou"
Obsolete? Depends. I think it's amazing their skills are still as effective as thousand of years ago. And even if they are obsolete, they know hundreds of weak points in the human body. They could defeat a wrestler without even using their legs, thanks to those skills and knowing the weak points.
@yamiyomizuki that is sad that the Shaolin Temple has become commercialized, as i have a deep and profound respect for all cultures and their heritage, especially for the Chinese people and the Shaolin Monks for their fighting style and techniques. Much respect from New Zealand
There is a lot of debate about the origin of various martial arts. The most up-to-date understanding is that the story of the Bodhidarma is a crock. It's been disproved time and time again by martial arts historians. Taiji quan's earliest recroded movements are those by the daoist Zhang Sanfeng. Wudang is definitely the center of Taijiquan, but later it was introduced to Shaolin Temple. The consensus among most nowadays is that Shaolin acted as a hub for martial arts to come together
@theicechinchilla present day they are allowed but unfortunately it depends on the master, school, and also women don't have a very good reputation in kung fu, or staying within the temple very long, but there has been.
@s2mar33 Martial arts depends on your aims, man. If you just want a good execercise routine or to learn some self defense techniques, it just requires practice. Becoming a shaolin expert however, is a whole nother ball game.
@Sorvos You give these shaolin exhibition performers way to much credit. Yes many of them are indeed dangerous. But most shaolin practioners doesnt have combat training as their first priority. whereas mma and ufc fighters first priority is combat training. It doesnt take to much of a brain to figure out, who would generally win. ;-) I otherwise mainly agree with your comments, but you cant really compare these two things, as they generally are (in most aspects) of two different worlds.
I would pay good money to watch the Monks fight in the M.M.A. tournaments. I'd really like to see the top monk fight the top M.M.A. fighter. I'd bet my money on the monk.
Yes, these monks are so strong but so humble. Their major advantage is their knowledge of Chi. None of the MMA or UFC fighters would stand a chance once the monks used their Chi power. I'd love to c a monk kick the crap out of kimbo or whoever stepped up and show the world the awesome power of the Shaolin monks and the martial arts. Shaolin monks all the way.
@Dungarth Shaolin monks or any kung fu master for that matter know more weak points on the human body that you can count. Their amazing speed and the exploitation of these weak points (which is actually prohibited because their code prevents them from hurting another human being) compensates their lack of strength. Even so, a underpowered kung fu fist or kick, placed in the right spot can bring down even the sturdiest fighters. That's because kung fu has been developed over thousands of years.
@metalmaster014 Like you said, some moves are prohibited, both in kung fu and ufc. Especially in kung fu, since this people are prohibited by nature to even harm someone, not to mention kill. The Shaolin monks, I mean. Ufc fighters are indeed amongst the best fighters in the world, but I still believe that the perfect concentration, balance and amazing speed of a Shaolin monk would prevail against ufc moves.
@Dungarth Speaking of Bruce Lee, if you look at his style, he uses techniques that are fast and swift but they are aimed at proper body parts to induce that not even a boxer punch can achieve. Martial arts don't rely on strength or anger, which are atributes that can be found in many modern fighters, they focus on a clear mind and concentration. MMA may call itself as a descendent of Bruce Lee's style, but in reality mma fighters never achieve the pureness that Bruce Lee tried to show us.
@MitsosSasuke a monkey fighter give a strong hug to your leg in case of tkd or to your head in case of kick and break it, like a toy that you dislike. A frog get inside your body like a back shield, and give u a quick "k.o" breaking your breath, kicking your head or stopping your blood flux. those styles are made for both, training and killing, so never subestimate any fighter no metter what, until you learn that youll be just a bad noob. source: being KOed about a thousand times :(
@Sorvos I think that best fighters are actually people that are making living out of fighting, not kung fu masters like this. Everything comes with practice, and if you practice fighting in a cage you will probably be better prepared for a real fight than when you practice shadow boxing and all that fancy kung fu gymnastics, but you have never fought an opponent whose only goal is to knock you down. I say this with all respect to traditional martial artists.
I believe one of the main strengths of the frog technique lies in the legs as the kicking is devastating. Another strength is also that it uses some type of iron body techniques as the skin is also very difficult to pierce.
Man, the amount of dedication these guys have put through in their Gung Fu is extraordinary.
old is gold, an art that doesn't change in modern times it means that it remains traiditional always, it remains in its oldest goldest way
yeah it's true, what most of you think is mantis is actually leopard style, you can see by the way he's holding his hands during the form, especially the stances in the form. So it's frog, monkey, leopard and tai chi.
I love it when he takes the low leopard stance.
its fucking amazing how they managed to create powerful and effective fighting styles based on animals.
does the look of frog kung fu make anyone else wanna laugh. Total respect though. This guy could probablly rip my liver out with his pinky.
I'm sure they would annihilate 97% of their opponents in a street fight.
the third set was remarkable.
Rocky XII: Rocky gets his ass kicked by a Frog!
Sweet, I'm gonna check it out. I can't wait to see the monks scrap. Cheers for that.
I think frog is about struggling for your life against multiple attackers
Very unique Style of kung fu.. It kicks ass if he really fights.
@ledemonimmortel
I know they aren't the same :D
But I didn't know about the flexibility part! Thanks for telling me!
I didn't know you could kick someone's ass while doing the worm. Well done.
I suppose it's more in the fact that if they're agile enough to pull off those kinds of spins, leaps etc. then they've strength enough to do someone some serious damage - if they have to :)
Their code of honor forbids hurting another human being.
every "animal" style ive seen is just acrobatics with some kicks and strikes thrown in. this is a show they put on for visitors.
yea good movie
very nice demonstration.
I love that mantis, very edgy.
like the fight between yi long and brad riddell I saw that monk yi long in that fight took a breather by just taking a number of punches to the face uneffected.

ART
the frog style is good like imitation of a frog but if you use that style to fight, anyone is going to kick your ass.
esta muy bien este video enhorabuena

Leopard Style is my favorite and the one i use
I love the monkey because It`s Free, F*king crazy and is a mess, but strong.
Frog made my knees ache from watching.
lol the 2nd guy is so much like a money ;D good job
Frog is actual style although very rare. There are really many not so popular Animal Styles like Chicken or Turtle =)
Yes, concentrating the Qi stored in their DanTian and releasing it through the meridian channels in their body. Still, hard qigong such as breakin bricks is also very physical. To break things with their heads, for example, the would stand on their heads for hours every day to harden their skulls.
He would probably resort to something more "conventional",something more "orthodox" if he had to fight in the octagon...
Nice job on a hard wet surface
I am no expert; I don't practice Kung Fu, but I do practice other martial arts and study the different philosophies, hoping to apply them. I wonder who would win? A fully trained shaolin monk vs a fully trained ninja. Both should know pressure points.
I want to master the Praying Mantis one day, after I learn the basics of course.
I've got a shotgun rifle and a four wheel drive ........this country boy can survive.....
Thehymner i am with you..laugh then run like hell.
You are right except for Katas are at karate in wu-shu it's called Quan (Fist)
you can see the hit comming from him in tai chi style
I agree ralphy
@roninmarcus1
lol you mean mystery of chessboxin, and the movie is called 5 deadly venoms :P
Nope, not flashy at all :p
But still fascinating stuff, though...
Would really like to learn XingYiQuan and some Tai Chi. Perhaps some Wing Chun too :)
Hey, what's that in the last part? The one hat the old man showed?
@planetshakerxx i think animals are sheer power. their bodies are always if kept right pure muscle nd their killing stlye is often one of many intricate things each one does.
i though the big guy was about to budha palm them all LOL!
But dont forget, Shaolin did not start to practice martial arts as a body-strengthening training until way after the temple is established, and even then it didn't become main focus of the temple.

im taiwanese, i did study this art. I studied chinese medicine, acupuncture so i know what i am talking about. death touch or known as dim mak exist
The last man is showing Shaolin Rou Quan(Soft Fist )...

нереальный чувак!
that is crazy...

@DeusEx3 ...That is Shaolin: ...Martial & Buddihist.

what they are doing here is forms, used to train the body and mind, there's a different training to fight, and there's fighting styles, search about "sanshou"
@Puolakanaho We asked, but they said not on sundays. Makes sense.

Not saying they would, just saying they are more than likely capable.

ouch that looks like its painful.
