I feel like he's mourning her loss. It's pretty clear he was in duress. There's another video that shows him later by the bridge jaw popping. This whole incident is unsettling. I'm going to miss 402 so much. May she cross the rainbow bridge and watch over Lil teeny tiny 128. 😢
What the fuck is wrong with you have you ever been around wild animals or you just get all you're animal behaviorist knowledge from Disney grizzlies don't give two shits and a fuck about other grizzlies that's why they are always fighting and trying to kill one another they are brutal killing machines that don't show duress for anything
While we have obviously no idea what's going on in the minds of bears, I think it's highly problematic to anthropomorphize bears and their behavior. The rangers always mention this as well. 402 has a special place in my heart, I "met her" in person at Katmai in 2013 when she had her 5th litter of 3 spring cubs in tow. I observed them many times. And I'm sad about what has happened. That said (and I realize this may sound insensitive, but we are talking about untamed, majestic wild animals here, not pets) it's more likely that 856 is interested in the huge amount of calories 402's dead body represents than anything else. If he were "in mourning", why would stop to eat a dying fish en route to "paying his respects"? Let bears be bears, wild, awesome creatures roaming one of the most amazing wild landscapes I have ever had the good fortune of visiting.
I am heartbroken but have mixed emotions when I learned she was 503 (my favorite bear besides Otis) mama. Well his birth mother who later let Holly adopt him. What an amazing world bear world is. ❤
@@user-qc7hr4my7r I commented elsewhere that although I know it is completely irrational and projecting human values onto wild bears, it did cross my mind where were all the big boars who followed her around for mating when she needed their help. I do wonder if 856 or any of the other top boars might have intervened had they been there. Not out of love, etc., but because the top boars will generally play sheriff.
There is footage of 856 Jumping a napping 402 about a week before this incident. No fight ensued, we might chalk it up to "bear shenanigans", but it's also possible that 402, a very old bear at around 30 years of age, was showing weakness not noticeable to us but noticeable to other bears. In the wild, the weak often become prey, and bears are certainly opportunistic animals. It's possible that 469, a bear we know relatively little about since he's usually not present for most of the year, but who is also quite old by bear standards, might have seen a weakened 402 as an opportunity to better prepare himself for hibernation. It's interesting to note that in October 2012, 469 was observed guarding a bear carcass in the same general area that this incident took place. It's not known how that bear might have died. The point I'm trying to make is that while it's perfectly normal to feel sadness about 402's death, we always have to remember that these are wild animals living in a very wild place, and when we put our "scientist hats" on, this is actually a fascinating example of wild nature taking its course. And further proof that we actually know very little about these amazing creatures.
How do we know that it was 32 that he charged? You can't really tell from this clip -- is it more evident from a longer clip, or is it just a presumption based on knowing that 32 was guarding the cache around that time?
@wendyhood1006 I wondered that as well. So absolutely shocking it was big, tall, massive 402, but maybe he sensed a vulnerability we couldn't. I don't know. But I was speechless with shock when we learned which bear had been killed.
@@libby5823I know so was I she was huge but I did notice she was sleeping a lot more lately maybe age had caught up with her 😢 I’m really going to miss her tho not seeing her fishing the lip next year or being chased by 856 747 and 32 😂 and her fabulous diving skills she will be missed ❤
In Autumn, bears enter into hyperphagia. Basically, they're constantly hungry and will take a lot more risks to get food so they can survive the winter. For an older bear like Patches, this kill may have been what he needed to make it through the winter. He also has a history. His first appearance, he was found on another dead bear cache. It may not have been his kill, but that encounter may have taught him to think of other bears as a risky meal.
He was found guarding a cache in 2012, but it is not known if he had killed the bear. Like this cache, that one was also taken from him by a more dominant bear.
We really don't know what bears think and feel, despite some people pretending to know. I personally believe bears know and feel much more than we understand. Bears do not mate for life, and I would say they most likely do not mourn lost mates, but the relationship between 402 and 856 was more than a typical one time mating session and extended over many years with unusual intensity (and many cubs). At a minimum, 856 unquestionably knows 402, and possibly feels a sense of loss.
It's at Brooks Falls, Alaska in Katmai National Park. An older male bear (469) killed a much loved older female bear (402). The encounter was captured on explore.org live streaming bear cams. I did not record it, but you can find video of it on TH-cam if interested.
856 and all of us are heartbreaking losing 402!:(

That is what I was thinking. Litte tiny bean needs a mama bear in the spirit world.
That's a sweet idea❤

Love that you called 402 “Mother of Bears”!
i am heartbroken. i know I'm not supposed to feel this way but 32 and now Patches have made my heart so heavy this bear season. 🌈
It is okay to feel heartbroken over the loss of an animal. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. ❤

I have wondered about that myself since yesterday 😢

Wasn't it 469 Patches who cached 402? He's the one who killed her.
32 chased him off.
Yes. 469 patches is the killer.

Rangers still at the park had reported prior to this video that 32 had taken the cache from 469, so it is assumed based on that.
I’m new to this also. Any reason known for the kill? Long term problems or just spontaneous? Cubs involvrd?
No cubs involved, thankfully, or history of conflict between 469 and 402. I'm sorry to say it, but it seems hunger may have been the reason.
Someone was wondering if he could sense she was unwell and took advantage of the situation 😢

Approximately how old was 402?
Mid to late 20s
I believe she was around 27
Didn't 469 kill another bear in 2013?

@erica-bearica it initially was 4 05 length and when I realized that, I did actually trim it to make it 4 02. 🩷
What is the cache of 402?
@melissalawsonhern Possibly the body of the female bear or what's left 😢
unfortunately it means a food stash (her body). But it is nature and I pass no judgments on bears
This is gruesome. But they have found people in a cache too. Half buried. It has happened in Montana.
