I have three different models of John Deere mower, I kind of go on to the next, to the next, etc It's great if something breaks and you're far from town (usually my absentminded neglect is cause), backup helps, all three mowers Free, actually fixed them all w/o your help! Total parts we're almost certainly under $150 and I bought new blades for two mowers. I guess I'm saying I have nothing to complain about😊
I keep praying the transmission isn't really bad and my mom's mower just like the one you're working on but I know it has to be bad lol, I keep telling myself there's some kind of adjustment that I need to make on the acceleration linkage somehow I checked and filled the transmission and replaced the belt to the transmission to drive but I couldn't get the new plug back in so I cut a synthetic wine cork to the right just a little too big size and pop it in with a hammer and it stayed in now so far I know it's unorthodox it works just great cutting grass it just suddenly all of a sudden needs to catch up and then if I back off on the accelerator it seems to go oh okay it's like I'm pushing it too far somehow I don't know it's the transmission I know it is...
My dad and I had John deere tractors since 1979 never had problems with them, I rebuilt the whole except the engine swap,the old engine was smoking and leaking making messes,thanks for your comment.

Hey Brad, thanks for the vid. My nephew has a 2014 of this JD. He's having trouble starting it after the new starter and new battery routine. I told him the intake valve might need adjusting or his compression release could be bad. Do they still use a similar Briggs engine and did they do anything to fix the compression release problem ? I read it is pretty common. Thanks again !
Many different issues why an engine won’t start. Yes, I would suggest as you said to adjusting the valves. I do not come across many cams that fail. Maybe two or three a year but I am a small shop. When I order a new cam, they don’t look any different than the old cams and they never had a service bulletin that I’m aware of on them.

Hi Brad, I've seen a product called Break-in Oil for new engines. What do you think about using this oil? I also do a Break-In procedure when I have a new mower. This was also recommended for my new car engine and brake pads. As they say, "It can't hurt."
Yes, break in on this engine is around 8hrs. which was discussed with the owner of the engine. I never used break in oil. I have heard of break lube on camshafts on automotive engines and that is mentioned when installing the cam. I personally have never seen in any manual for small engines, to use break in oil. Just change after break in time.

She smoked like a frieght train and leaked oil and messy and thought it was going to blow up,that would really be messy, thanks for your question.

@@alexmcbride1924 thank you for the comment,the engine sound like it was going to pop..oil leaks are messy black and blue smoke, time to swap out that engine.
Any suggestions for replacing a Kohler 17.5 hp on a JD L110 which is no lomger available ? Perhaps a B&S 17. 5 or 19 hp? Any suggestons welcome or source for advise
I personally haven’t swapped out from Kohler to Briggs often and do not remember. I would check the electric connections. I think you should be able to put a Briggs and Stratton engine in place of the Kohler if the electric plugs in. If it doesn’t you can still do it but would need to figure out the electric and remember to measure the crankshaft diameter and length on the Briggs engine before you purchase one to make sure it matches the old one. The engine mount bolt patterns on most of the single cylinder Briggs and Kohler engines are the same so that shouldn’t be an issue.
