BUT we love your ramblings! Edit: Well done EU for cutting us off from wonderful small businesses! As an EU customer I understand your frustration and believe me, we are all not happy with this as well. I am glad there is being something done about all those cheap scammy shops but I wish it was done differently and actually thought through. Hope it all gets figured out soon (but with how things look recently I doubt it. I live in Slovakia and it's a frustrating mess here rn).
i was the one who asked you about the gpsr and your response before was already wonderful. thank you for being open with your thoughts and opinions, as a fellow small business owner i really value being able to hear other small business owners' perspectives (especially ones from other countries outside of my own). and thank you for taking the time to make this video, it's much, much appreciated!
Roll a save vs. bureaucracy! I don't ship internationally. Dealing with US BS is enough. When you get into customs, delays, having to keep up with international news to know what strikes or attacks or laws or taxes/levies/restrictions are happening, yeah, no. I'm lucky to figure out our own postal and taxing/reporting restrictions/requirements. I'm a part-time one woman show (+cat), and 300 million potential customers is plenty for me. Trying to keep it simple, despite my nature. Good luck, be well, and sock on!
I removed EU about 2 years ago after too many lost/returned parcels, too much liability to post there. I'm not shutting my Etsy shop to GB, if I get a Northern Ireland order I'll just cancel it, that's my stance for now. US makes up 40% off my business so let's hope nothing happens there! Thanks for the discussion xx
Yes you can filter NI out of UK shipping on shopify but not on Etsy as far as I'm aware. Settings / Shipping and Delivery / Custom Shipping Rates / Shipping Zone - Scroll down to UK and deselect NI from the 5 available regions
It's frustrating for EU sellers as well. Yes, we don't have to pay for a person/company representative, but we have to comply still. The regulations are for large companies, and they don't think about the individuals. Like...do I warn for papercuts when I sell a notebook? Do I need to have a serial number for stickers I print at home? It's confusing and frustrating, It will also affect EU customers, I won't be able to order from any small creators. Even EU sellers might decide not to ship to the EU. Love that for us!
Yea its a nightmare the GPSR, I've worked out it was 20% of my business this year so it's a decent blow to my business and as of yet, €500 euro annually seems to be the best price I've seen for a GPSR representative that isn't a scam (oh yea have you heard about the scam companies that have already popped up that will happily charge you less 😅...). As you said I'm just hoping that with time things get cleared up and hopefully some legit companies aimed at helping truly small businesses pop up to help fill the need for a representative for a lower fee. There's also the UK version of this GPSR currently being proposed too so god knows what extra hurdles that throws up. The joys of running a small business 😂
As a US seller, I had to just stop selling to the EU, which is a sad situation, but it just doesn't make financial sense for me to pay for an EU rep and do a ton of paperwork and overhead for some handmade bookmarks and coasters, lol. If all of UK were a part of this, I'd have to turn off shipping there too. At the moment, I'll just manually cancel any orders to NI -- even though that isn't full compliance, I guess that's all I can do for now.
You can filter NI out of UK shipping on shopify which I have done, and I have changed by ETSY shop to remove delivery setting to the EU for the moment. I am going to wait to see how this pans out over the next few weeks, like another of your commenters below I too am taking a break over Christmas, I really need to decompress after everything being thrown at us sellers in the UK this year. I would like to finish off by saying that I really enjoy your videos, love your British humor being a fellow Brit myself 😊
I looked through this, the bottom line is if you are a small or even medium sized business you must stop sending parcels to the EU now. Their are o loop holes or ifs or buts, that is it. Edit your etsy shipping profile, delete the everyone else option, and then go through every country a to z adding delivery to every country accept the EU market countries, it will take an hour and a half to do but that's it. Then go make a cup of tea and slow clap the EU and brexit. You had a good run but you will not be sending parcels to the EU any more, that's it. In a few years I am certain the UK will be back in the common market, but you will have to suck it up until then, life happens 🙂↕️ oh yes don't forget rou will not be shipping to N Ireland either.
We're all in this together in figuring this out. I've put my Etsy shop in holiday mode for now; taking a break over Christmas. I really hope things are made clearer in that time. It's either too vague or there's contradictory information. I'm not sure if digital products are included or not and it's also confusing what to do coming from the UK.
My head hurts! I've switched my Etsy shop on Holiday mode until the dust settles ..... 🤞 I switched off Germany, sadly, ages ago but intend to switch off the EU asap. Need to wait for Etsy to allow us to switch off NI, again, sadly 😢 I agree, I think part of it is due to economic reasons. We've been buying cheap and potentially harmful stuff from overseas for years, admittedly it has gone off the scale in recent years. I think the EU is trying to stem this tide (tsunami??), which is fair enough, to be honest, but it stinks for us small businesses outside of the EU. Hey ho, another test of our staying power ☹
As I read it, if I want to sell in the EU, I have to have a responsible person in every country that will inspect my products and make sure they are safe. That could cost £1500.. not sure if that is the entire cost or if that would be £1500 for every country I sell in. Based on that I won't be selling in the EU. I could be totally wrong of course. Claire
I only ship to the USA and UK...there's no way I'm getting buried beneath paperwork like that, if it's anything like REACh.. I'm typing as you speak.. it sounds like REACh.. "Authorized Representatives".. no way, surely they don't want to make digital products safe...😮
GPSR. Greeeeat,.another barrier between a producer and the customer. 🙄 The ancient recipe for national success: Low tax. Small government. Limited regulations. How strange nobody in the West is deploying this strategy, even with its proven track record. 🤔 Thanks for another great vid Kim. Cheers! 🥛🍪🍪
It's because the extreme rich have bought the government. The voters are ignored. The MAGAs are going to suffer like the rest of us. And the non-voters could have made a difference, whether a total landslide into the serfdom of the rich or a real democracy where where we all do better when we all do better.
@CricketsBay because Northern Ireland will be included in the list of GPSR countries, so my website builder has included it, so my site now reads NOT available in your country when someone clicks on it.
Oh, GPSR is a nightmare. I have removed Northern Ireland as a shipping destination on Folksy, Etsy say they will come up with solutions and let us know by the 31st December and my own web site cannot split Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK. So it's looking like I will have to stop selling on my web site. It makes me so mad that these fat cats in the EU (and elsewhere) sit in their ivory towers and make decisions that can wipe out small scale creative businesses. I'm all for safety information being needed but requiring micro businesses to have a representative is nonsense. In this day and age it's easy to get hold of a manufacturer without the need for a third party taking legal responsibility. Can you tell I'm riled at this? I can't even remember the last time I had a NI order. It's heartbreaking. 😭
Is Northern Ireland being excluded because because it's part of the island of Ireland and somehow it's being treated differently than the rest of the UK for businesses?
You could always just cancel any orders on your own website if the destination is Northern Ireland. And maybe add a note to your shipping page. That way, you can keep your shop open
@@CricketsBay Because of Brexit, to avoid a customs border being put on the Island of Ireland it was put between GB and Northern Ireland. That is, Northern Ireland effectively remained in the EU single market for goods and thereby has to follow EU goods regulations.
@@CricketsBay It's due to problems after Brexit. No one wanted a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland as it would cause problems with the Good Friday peace deal. So they created an imaginary border down the Irish Sea and made Northern Ireland into a pseudo-EU state for trade. Now sales there have to abide by EU regulations but it has caused a lot of problems and they have had to tinker with regulations over the last few years. This is yet another problem. I would have expected that the politicians would have learned their lessons over these kinds of issues but it seems that they haven't 🙄
@@thinkdavecom Thanks for the suggestion. At the moment that is what I am doing. But it's actually against the regulations to have items visible to customers in Northern Ireland with the option to buy if you are not going to honour the order. If I can't cut Northern Ireland out as a destination then I am breaking the rules. It's crazy.
BUT we love your ramblings!

You're very welcome. At the very least, it's good to know we're not alone in this! 💚
Thanks, Kim. I think dropshippers using Alibaba, Aliexpress, Temu, etc. has caused this. Lots of counterfeit products and toys containing lead.

Oh, that's brilliant. Your instructions will help a lot of UK sellers and people elsewhere who sell to the UK.

I had to look it up, being in the US. Product safety rules "modernised" from the previous rules.
Those.socks look lovely. You have had so much trouble with the yarn that I won't seek it out.

You only need one representative for entire EU.

Then green one is mint ?
No one actually knows what’s going on. No chance they are actually going to enforce these fines for the time being.
wax drugs HAHAHAHAH yes socks uppdate it is my life now HEEHEHEHEH joke
The new regulation will make our products even *less* competitive against the artificially cheap Temu and Shein.
It will include these products too Basically, anything coming into the EU with some exceptions.
