As an avid Pokémon fan I can say that this was brilliant. The games hide so many truths, but in a way that we all still enjoy. Faced with many hidden mature concepts, no wonder the games are still enjoyed well beyond our teen years. The ending to this video, however. Dang. That certainly wasn't Professor Oak.

I think, this is what college-level education should be all about - ability to think critically and express opinion in a sophisticated manner.

You might want to read the manga series called Pokémon Special, also known as Pokémon Adventures. While it is still aimed at teenagers, it goes into much darker subject matter and even includes gym leaders becoming part of a a worldwide terrorist group more terrifying than Team Rocket. I forget the details, but it is very dark and even features a few Pokémon being actually killed onscreen from violent attacks. It’s more like what the Pokémon world would be like in the actual real world, I think.

Perhaps Nintendo are turning us all into a new breed of super soldiers with immense physical stamina and empathy deficit disorder :P

Hah I'm glad I came across this one. It's a really interesting take on Pokemon and one that I've seen before albeit infrequently. There are definitely strong and deliberate parallels but in universe the world isn't quite as harsh as you portray, after all it's shown repeatedly in the anime particularly that Ash's Pokemon do genuinely care about and want to be with him and a number of then deliberately submitted for capture with no coercion. Clearly some of the way Pokemon is written is to make it more child friendly but it does frequently come into conflict with the underlying morals and the ethics of making animals fight one another for sport. A world like Pokemon's has become isn't possible in reality because things that exist as true within their world are mutually exclusive in ours and force us to ask tricky questions. In particular it's described officially in Pokemon and displayed frequently that Pokemon enjoy the act of battling and that they suffer no long term lasting damage from fights that occur 'within the rules' of battling and that there is this innate desire for a Pokemon to battle against a trainer trying to capture them but once they are captured they are perfectly content with and happy to bond to a trainer all of a sudden, as though it was almost some magical test of will and they secretly desired to be tamed.

I've literally been a Pokemon fan since I was 8 when it 1st came to America and I can state that this was rather brilliant! Rather meticulous in your arguement to include decisions once made in the drawing boards etc.
    Although, a few things:
    1) Did you know?
Although Pikachu was named for a different reason, there IS a creature named Pika that lives in the North American Hemisphere. It's rather fragile and can live in specific weather climates.
    en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pika
    2) I do like how you mention the duo Team Rocket as a terrible pair that tends to be foiled in theit attempts; however, they are seen as wannabes: Team Rocket has official Black Wardrobes for grunts. Giovanni doesn't really recognize them as they tend to fail without fail. Each region has it's own Underground Criminal Organization, each having their own purpose. Team Rocket's is to conquer the world while Team Plasma is to force all trainers to release them from Pokeballs and their enslaved bonds.
    3) You can explain elemental properties as if they were controlled scientific reactions. Like Pikachu's cheek storage sacs filled with condensed electrical energies. So, you can even go further as to say how Humans try to manipulate even the natural cosmic flow. Pokemon like Mew and Mewtwo are psychic, Mewtwo was lab created by Mew's DNA. Consider being psychic as being intuitive to the natural laws of the world to some degree. Mew is considered to have the Mother DNA of all regular Pokemon. Arceus is considered to have made all Pokemon prior to that, i.e. Legendary Pokemon, the ones that can manipulate Time, Space, even grant Wishes. In later games, you can catch all of these concepts that literally represent cosmic laws.
    4) Although this would take your paper into a different direction: You can possibly even argue how pokemon is a lawless world. There aren't many rules and they're all circled into how to fight in the gyms. Children are allowed to roam the world freely at age 10 plus. Parents don't get worried for the most part. And Phantumps are considered the souls of children turned into pokemon who lost their ways in forests. Arguably, you can mention how there is lack of government and police officials. In the series, there are Police Officers like Officer Jenny: however, they are rarely to be seen anywhere in the games. In games with big cities, there are plenty of evidence to see business workers and the wealthy taking all the luxury days off. But other than organized business, there aren't any rules in the respect of pokemon. Any are moralistically implied but rarely spoken. Because of that, it creates uncertainty or ambiguity in the handling of pokemon and increases the chances for factions like Team Rocket to even be possible to work within. Perhaps to circle it back to your paper, perhaps then, the allowance of criminal activity can eventually call the need for experienced young warlords in a subliminal fashion. If one becomes too rampant, another force created becomes invariably necessary. This then may add to the subliminal psychosis of how it is a War Simulator. But subliminal analysis isn't often a strong arguement, so even I probably wouldn't use it.

This is a really interesting way of looking at it and pretty accurate (from a certain point of view), if embellished heavily. however, I have one or two dissents -- "peaceful by nature" my right behind. What about Pokemon that prey on other pokemon and all the wild Pokemon who battle for fun? they *can* live in harmony, but there's also just as many who don't...so basically pretty much like real animals. Also according to Rotomdex in Gen VII, pokeballs are bigger on the inside and actually rather comfortable and cosy (also the conquering areas thing sounds amusingly like Pokemon Conquest, whose plot was basically that in a nutshell)

You know, you could have done more with the Team Rocket route. Rather than simply focusing on Jesse and James in the anime, you could have taken a note from the games and manga. Team Rocket clones Mewtwo from Mew to create the ultimate weapon, but when it escapes, they engage in a literal hostile takeover of a company's 12-story corporate offices in order to steal their prototype Master Ball, just to control it. Imagine the mafia raiding The Googleplex and threatening all the devs while their Don waltzes into Sundar Pichai's office demanding a flash drive with some prototype patented Google AI software that they need to control their death robot. Say what you want about Team Rocket, but they had some serious balls.
